WWE NXT Hits
Bayley vs. Carmella for the NXT Women’s Title: While the hot crowd certainly helped, this was still a nice main event for the first UCF Arena show. Nothing special in the grand scheme of Bayley’s title reign, but serviceable, and the post match hints that her next title defence will be very, very special when she finally takes on Asuka. It’s also super refreshing to see a “friendship” match end without having some unrest seeded. BayMella lives!
Johnny Gargano vs. Baron Corbin: This was a nice little opener for the show, where they kept things within Corbin’s wheelhouse and played to his strengths. Though it isn’t harder to be better than “Surly, uncaring Corbin”, “Angry Corbin” is much more tolerable.
WWE NXT Misses
Overall Show: While I’m still excited for the remaining UCF shows, I’m so annoyed they kicked off with the same formula as the past couple of Full Sail episodes. What’s got into NXT creative? The middle segments of these shows are becoming toxic.
Hype Bros vs Corey Hollis and Jon Skylar: Who was this for? No one could ever take the Hype Bros seriously given their combo of character and appalling win/loss record, so this squash match win may have been the very definition of futile.
Alexa Bliss vs. Cameron: Speaking of bad decisions, who thought this was a good idea? Though it does make me happy to report that Alexa Bliss is now officially “better than this”.
Elias Samson vs. Jesse Sorenson: I hope for his sake this only applies to his squash matches, but so far Samson has been nothing short of an excitement vacuum. I actually like his look, and his “mystique” to some extent, but his matches just bottom out any momentum the show has going (and this none had none anyway at this point).
