PJ Black told Dot Net staffer Anish Vishwakoti that he signed a Ring of Honor on Friday. “I signed a deal with ROH yesterday actually, so not a free agent anymore,” Black told Vishwakoti, who was representing UCLA Radio at Saturday’s Bellator 214 event in Inglewood, California.
Black also said he had interest from other promotions. “New Japan was always a goal of mine and, of course, they work with Ring of Honor,” he said. “My Lucha contract came to an end, I got an offer from WWE to go back, but it wasn’t really what I was looking for right now. With AEW popping up, I guess everyone’s trying to sign free agents.”
Black also commented on the effect that All Elite Wrestling entering the game has had on independent wrestlers signing deals with various promotions. “I think it’s fantastic, what a great time to be a wrestler and an even better time to be a fan right now,” he said. “With AEW popping up and a bunch of stuff happening, there’s so much talent on the independents too. It seems like WWE is snatching up a lot of them, AEW is trying to snatch up a lot of them… ROH has signed top guys… It’s a fantastic time right now.”
Powell’s POV: Black must feel confident that ROH will maintain its working relationship with NJPW despite AEW entering the game. Black, who worked as Justin Gabriel in WWE, joins a recent group of ROH signings that includes Rush, Bandido, PCO, Brody King, and Mark Haskins. ROH has done a nice job in their efforts to counter the losses of Cody, the Young Bucks, and the SCU members to AEW.
