Melrose, Massachusetts at Melrose Memorial Hall
1. Jonathan Gresham forced Zack Sabre Jr. to submit. This was an excellent match; the best of the show (and maybe even of Evolve as well). Zack gave in to a wild hold that started as an octopus stretch and contorted indescribably from there. Post-match, a frustrated Sabre, who has dropped two straight to Gresham, challenged him to a 2-out-of-3 falls match at Americanrana 2016, which will be back at Fete Music in Providence RI in two weeks on July 31.
2. Lufisto pinned Veda Scott. Both ladies worked hard. It went a little long but the match was fine. A bit scary on the finish however, as LuFisto struggled to get Veda up in the rack, so simply fell backwards and spiked Veda right on her neck. She appeared to be alright.
3. Team Pazuzu (Jaka, Angel Ortiz, and Mike Draztik) over Brian Fury and Da Hit Squad (Dan Maff and Monta Mack). Fury took the pin following a diving stomp/powerbomb/neckbreaker combo from Pazuzu.
4. Chris Dickenson brutalized Pinky Sanchez. That’s the only way to put it. This was ungodly stiff. Dickenson won with the Outsider’s Edge. Pinky landed hard on one shoulder but hung around the rest of the night so he managed to survive. Post-match, Jaka came out and the original Team Pazuzu: Dickenson, Jaka, and Pinky, squashed their beef and hugged.
5. Kimber Lee beat JT Dunn with a powerbomb into the alligator clutch pin. There was some tension between Brian Milonas and JT Dunn leading to the finish, but it was Dunn’s arrogance that cost him the match, not Milonas’s involvement that won it for Kimber.
6. Matthew Riddle tapped Tommaso Ciampa to a cross armbar. Good match to close the show with neither guy appearing to hold back despite working double-duty between Beyond and Evolve. Evolve’s Catch Point team (Drew Gulak, Tracy Williams, and TJP along with Riddle) came out to introduce themselves to the Beyond crowd. Hot Sauce said that they’ve made their mark in Evolve and now they want to start making a mark in Beyond too. Team Pazuzu (Jaka, Ortiz, and Draztik) attacked them from behind and all of the men brawled to the back to close the show.
Zim’s Notes: Overall this was a very different Beyond experience from usual, for better and worse. On one hand, the show is two weeks before their biggest show of the year, Americanrana, and was originally more of a pit stop show along the way. Then with the drama over Evolve losing their building and running a double-header, this show was made an iPPV last minute without some of Beyond’s most popular and representative current acts. That said, it was the tightest and most well-behaved Beyond show I’ve ever attended. And while that’s another tally in the “not necessarily representative of Beyond column, it’s all I’ve ever asked of them. It was relatively well-paced, there was nothing egregious, and it was easy to watch.
This was a two-match show to me going in, and both the opener and closer delivered as strong or stronger than I expected, and the middle of the show was fine. Particularly considering the constraints and what they had to work with, I thought this was a perfectly fine showing from the Beyond crew. Additionally, the venue was excellent and I’d really look forward to returning should they be back at the Melrose Memorial Hall.
