Major League Wrestling TV (Episode 30)
Taped in October 4 in New York, New York at Melrose Ballroom
Aired November 9, 2018 on beIN Sports
A video package aired on the war between Konnan and Salina de la Renta. Narrator Rich Bocchini touted Konnan bringing in Daga to challenge Low Ki for the MLW Championship in the main event… The MLW opening aired…
The broadcast team of Tony Schiavone and Matt Striker checked in and hyped the title matches. Striker said Daga is essentially the newer and younger version of Low Ki and questioned how the champion would handle that…
1. Marko Stunt vs. Myron Reed. Striker once again played up whether Stunt could rise up in a big promotion such as MLW. Reed performed a great cutter from the top rope onto Stunt in the ring for a near fall. Stunt went for a sunset flip, but Reed was too strong and ended up rolling Stunt into a pin…
Myron Reed defeated Marko Stunt.
Powell’s POV: I actually enjoyed watching Stunt work with the Hart Foundation in last week’s six-man tag main event more than I did seeing him with a cruiserweight size wrestler in Reed. Don’t get me wrong, this was a solid match, but some of the fun of Stunt is seeing him take on heavyweights. It might even be fun if he refused to compete in MLW’s middleweight division because he is hellbent on being a heavyweight.
Maxwell J Friedman and Aria Blake were shown signing autographs at a comic store and being uppity while mocking the kid who wanted his autograph. Blake charged the kid twenty bucks…
Salina de la Renta and Low Ki delivered a promo in front of the MLW backdrop. Low Ki asked Konnan if he was paying attention to what he did to Fenix or what LA Park did to Pentagon. He said Konnan is bringing in another kid far from home for a championship match. Low Ki said it sounds like a dream, but it’s about to become a nightmare. He said Konnan is leading kids from Mexico to their slaughter…
Sami Callihan delivered a selfie style promo and boasted about taking out MVP and destroying the confidence of Shane Strickland. He also said he sent Jimmy Havoc back to England in a pine box. Callihan said he is the draw and he is pro wrestling… Striker hyped Callihan vs. Tom Lawlor in a Chicago Street Fight for next week’s television show…
2. Maxwell J. Friedman (w/Aria Blake) vs. Jason Cade vs. Jimmy Yuta in a three-way elimination match for the MLW Middleweight Championship. MJF let the rivals go at it early. He grabbed Yuta from behind and held him for Cade, who opted to punch MJF instead. Cade dumped MJF onto Yuta, then covered Yuta for a two count.
Later, Yuta had Cade in a tarantula hold and also put MJF in an ankle lock briefly. Cade tried to toss Yuta from the ring, but Yuta countered into a rollup pin to eliminate Cade. MJF rolled up Yuta for a two count. Yuta came back with a powerbomb, but Blake distracted the referee. Cade low blowed Yuta and laid him out with a move, allowing MJF to cover Yuta for the win…
Maxwell J Friedman defeated Jason Cade and Jimmy Yuta in a three-way elimination match to retain the MLW Middleweight Championship.
Powell’s POV: A decent match, but nothing particularly memorable about the in-ring action. I continue to enjoy the Cade vs. Yuta feud and this furthered that, so no complaints.
Kevin Sullivan joined the broadcast team by phone as highlights aired of Brian Pillman Jr. hitting him with a cane. Sullivan said Pillman shouldn’t be hanging with Teddy Hart and Davey Boy Smith Jr. He said the thing that bothers him is that he wonders if Pillman set the whole thing up. He said Pillman is like a godson to him, but he has to teach him a lesson even though it will pain him to do so…
Kaci Lennox interviewed Konnan backstage. He said that if Salina hadn’t taken Fenix’s mask off the result of his match with Low Ki would have been different. He said he would make sure Salina didn’t get involved… An ad aired for the Miami shows on December 13-14…
3. Low Ki (w/Salina de la Renta) vs. Daga (w/Konnan) for the MLW Championship. Low Ki controlled the early action and threw chops before taking it to ringside and slamming Daga on the floor. Back in the ring, Daga fired back with some chops of his own and eventually performed a lung blower. Ricky Martinez came out to ringside with his nose bandaged (from last week’s match with Puma Kid). Low Ki ripped at Drago’s cauliflower ear, which opened it up, causing Daga to bleed heavily. Low Ki followed up with a double stomp and a scored a clean pin. Salina was shown smiling as Daga’s ear bled heavily…
Low Ki defeated Daga to retain the MLW Championship.
Low Ki was informed by an interviewer that Tom Lawlor is cashing in his Battle Riot contract for a shot at the MLW Championship at the Super Fight event. Low Ki didn’t seem happy, then said fans will always respect his reign…
Powell’s POV: A fairly flat main event that never kicked out of second gear. The finish certainly made Low Ki and Salina look sadistic and that was a great shot of her smiling as she watched Daga bleeding. MLW never really sold viewers on Daga going in. While the broadcast team, particularly Striker, is good about helping bring viewers up to speed, I hope MLW creative isn’t making the mistake of assuming that all of their viewers are independent super fans who know every wrestler they bring in. Despite the main event underwhelming, I did enjoy the overall show, as it was cool to see a couple of title matches. It’s also cool that they are airing the Sami Callihan vs. Tom Lawlor street fight next week, as that match was just taped on Thursday night, meaning MLW is continuing their quick turnaround time. I really wish ROH would take that approach instead of having long delays between their tapings and the first show airing.
