Peter Thiel confirmed that he has financed Hulk Hogan’s legal expenses in his battle with Gawker media. Thiel, who was publicly outed as gay by a Gawker Media owned blog back in 2007, spoke publicly this week for the first time about bankrolling Hogan.
“It’s less about revenge and more about specific deterrence,” Thiel said. “I saw Gawker pioneer a unique and incredibly damaging way of getting attention by bullying people even when there was no connection with the public interest… I can defend myself. Most of the people they attack are not people in my category. They usually attack less prominent, far less wealthy people that simply can’t defend themselves.” Read more at NYTimes.com.
Powell’s POV: Thiel declined to say whether he has funded other cases against Gawker, though he did say this is not the first time he has done something like this. He also stated that $10 million is “roughly in the ballpark” of the legal expenses he has covered, and noted that he does not expect to make any money from this as he considers it to be “one of my greater philanthropic things that I’ve done.” He also declined to say whether he has paid Hogan.
