Veda Scott provided English commentary with men named Miguel Castro and Jorge. The lighting is good, and the crowd is listed at 10,000.
NOTE: Three of these matches aired Thursday on ROH TV’s “Global Wars.” ROH aired the matches featuring Kevin Knight, Kyle Fletcher, and Komander.
1. Leon Cage vs. Max Star. I haven’t seen either man before. Cage is a white kid from Rev Pro, and he wore a high school letterman jacket. Max Star wears a mask, and he’s of average size. The match has a 10-minute time limit, and we have a countdown clock in the top right-hand corner. Cage hit a dive through the ropes to the floor (and a nice use of replay of it). Max hit a tornado springboard armdrag into the ring. He hit an Arabian Press to the floor onto Leon. (Veda called it a split-legged moonsault).
In the ring, Max went for a Lionsault Press, but Cage caught him with a kick at 3:30. Max hit an impressive flip dive to the floor, launching off the second rope inside the ring. Max hit an Arabian Press in the ring for a nearfall at 6:00. They traded rollups. Cage hit an Ospreay-style Stormbreaker for a nearfall. Max hit a huracanrana. Cage hit a top-rope Spanish Fly at 8:00. He hit a moonsault over the ring post to the floor on Max! He then hit a top-rope Phoenix splash for the pin! I’m impressed!
Leon Cage defeated Max Star at 8:43.
2. Maya World and Hyan vs. Kira and Candela. I am pretty sure I haven’t seen Candela before; she wore black and a mask. She opened against Hyan with some basic reversals. Candela hit an enzuigiri. Kira (wearing white) hit a springboard crossbody block. Hyan dropped Kira snake-eyes in the corner at 2:00. Maya tagged in and hit a cannonball in the corner. Maya hit a double 619 for a nearfall, and got booed! Maya hit a snap suplex for a nearfall, as Veda explained it’s fairly common for a wrestler to get booed in their debut in Mexico.
Kira hit a dropkick to send Hyan to the floor, then she dove onto both AEW women. Candela then hit a corner twisting press to the floor onto all three women at 5:00! In the ring, Kira hit a Code Red for a nearfall. Candela hit a slingshot elbow drop for a nearfall. The Mexican duo both missed moonsaults. All four got up and fought. Maya hit a slingshot leg drop at 8:00. Maya hit a cannonball from the apron to the floor on Candela. Meanwhile, Hyan tied Kira in the Tree of Woe, but Kira escaped. Kira hit a Moonsault to pin Hyan. Good action.
Kira and Candela defeated Hyan and Maya World at 9:06.
3. “The Swirl” Blake Christian and Lee Johnson vs. Calavera Jr. I and Calavera Jr. II. The Swirl wore sharp blue robes with silver lining. I haven’t seen the Calaveras before; they both wear masks and identical gear. (And no visible tattoos so they could easily confuse a ref with some Killer Bee switcheroo magic.) Blake brawled with one on the floor while Lee battled the other in the ring. A Calavera hit a missile dropkick on Lee at 2:00. The brothers hit stereo basement dropkicks. One of them hit a top-rope somersault onto Blake as Blake was in the ropes at 4:00. Blake hit a 619, then a moonsault to the floor.
Lee hit a dive to the floor. Blake hit a springboard 450 Splash in the ring for a nearfall! The brothers hit stereo moonsaults to the floor. In the ring, Lee and a Calavera hit stereo crossbody blocks. Everyone got up at 6:30 and fought. (Veda and Jorge are making no effort to tell us which one is which. They are identical.) A brother gave his sibling a monkey-flip onto Lee in the corner. Lee hit a superkick. Blake hit a Lethal Injection on the entrance ramp. Lee hit a brainbuster for a nearfall at 8:00. One of the brothers rolled up Lee and leaned back in an O’Connor Roll for added leverage and scored the pin!
Calavera Jr. I and Calavera Jr. II defeated “The Swirl” Blake Christian and Lee Johnson at 8:33.
4. Austin Aries vs. Esfinge. Aries wore his MLW National Openweight Title belt. Esfinge has a belt, too. I’ll reiterate that Aries has been drinking from the fountain of youth, as he looks much younger than he did two years ago. He immediately tied up Esfinge’s left arm. He hit an armdrag and his basement dropkick. Esfinge unloaded some punches. They separated and took turns playing to the crowd at 2:30. Of course, Aries attacked from behind, and he hit a huracanrana to the floor. Aries whipped Esfinge into a guardrail.
In the ring, Aries hit a flying elbow drop for a nearfall. He tugged on Esfinge’s mask, and he kept him grounded. Esfinge hit a springboard dropkick at 5:30, then a monkey-flip. He dove through the ropes and crashed onto Aries. In the ring, Esfinge hit a series of kicks and got a nearfall. Aries hit a DVD on the ring apron at 7:30; he got a nearfall in the ring. They traded forearm strikes. Esfinge flipped him overhead with Aries landing stomach-first. Aries hit a discus forearm and his dropkick into the corner, then a brainbuster for the pin! Loud boos for that finish!
Austin Aries defeated Esfinge at 8:57.
5. Angel De Oro and Niebla Roja vs. “House of Torture” Douki and Yujiro Takahashi for the New Japan Strong Tag Team Titles. I didn’t know these belts still existed; it’s not like ‘New Japan Strong’ is still a thing happening anymore. Veda said Oro and Roja have also been CMLL tag champs for more than 1,600 days! Yujiro opened against Roja, wearing green trunks. Douki entered at 1:00 to face Oro. Oro hit a huracanrana. All four fought to the floor. In the ring, the HoT worked over Oro. Douki hit a double stomp to the chest, with Yujiro getting a nearfall at 4:00.
The brothers hit stereo dives through the ropes and barreled onto the HoT. In the ring, they worked over Douki, who tried to call for a timeout! The HoT took control and worked over Roja. Douki hit a double stomp to the back, and Yujiro hit a fisherman’s suplex for a nearfall at 7:00. Douki applied the Darkness Stretch (Veda called it an Italian Stretch). The HoT got stereo nearfalls. Douki hit a plancha to the floor on Oro. However, Roja hit a running sit-out powerbomb on Yujiro for the pin.
Angel De Oro and Niebla Roja defeated “House of Torture” Douki and Yujiro Takahashi to retain the New Japan Strong Tag Team Titles at 9:10.
6. “The Don Callis Family” Hechicero, Brian Cage, El Clon, and Volador Jr. (w/Don Callis) vs. Xelhua, Zandokan Jr., Ultimo Guerrero, and Neon. I had read that Volador Jr. had joined The Family, but it’s my first time seeing him with them. Zandokan Jr. is a pirate; he did an NJPW World Tag League a few years ago. Neon, wearing white and bright yellow, has a belt. All eight brawled at the bell! On the floor, El Clon whipped Neon into the guardrail. In the ring, Hechicero and Volador Jr. beat up Ultimo Guerrero. Cage whipped Zandokan Jr. into the guardrail at 1:30.
Hechicero knocked a ‘mini’ off the apron and was booed! The Family began working over Zandokan Jr. in a corner. Volador flipped Zandokan in the air; Cage caught him and hit a powerbomb for a nearfall at 4:30. Nice! The Family all beat up Ultimo Guerrero and stomped on him. UG hit a double armdrag at 6:30! He was fired up. Zandokan got a hot tag. Xelhua got in and hit some backbreakers over his knee. Neon hit a springboard dropkick, then a huracanrana on Cage. He hit a pop-up huracanrana on Hechicero.
Volador and Ultimo Guerrero traded some lucha offense. El Clon got back in at 9:00 and traded blows with Zandokan Jr. Zandokan hit a modified Falcon Arrow on Clon. Xelhua clotheslined Cage to the floor, then hit a plancha onto him. Clon hit a Pele Kick on Zandokan Jr. Neon hit a top-rope crossbody block on Hechicero, then a top-rope huracanrana at 10:30. Neon hit a cool double-jump moonsault to the floor. Meanwhile, Ultimo Guerrero tied Volador Jr. in a Stretch Muffler, and Volador tapped out!
Xelhua, Zandokan Jr., Ultimo Guerrero, and Neon defeated “The Don Callis Family” Hechicero, Brian Cage, El Clon, and Volador Jr. at 11:23.
7. Komander vs. Soberano Jr. Komander hit a huracanrana and a flip dive to the floor in the first 10 seconds! Soberano hit a superkick as Komander was upside down on the apron. Veda said Soberano beat Komander in June, so this is a quick rematch. Soberano got a nearfall in the ring at 2:00. Soberano Jr. is taller, and he worked over Komander. Komander got a flash rollup for a nearfall. Komander hit a double-jump huracanrana at 3:30. Soberano hit a powerslam for a nearfall. Soberano missed a moonsault. Komander went for a Poison Rana, but Soberano escaped.
Soberano kicked him to the floor. Komander hit the Poison Rana on the floor at 6:00! In the ring, Komander walked the tightrope from one turnbuckle to the other, then hit a springboard moonsault for a nearfall! Soberano hit a piledriver along his back onto the apron, then he nailed a Fosbury Flop to the floor at 8:00! In the ring, Soberano hit a top-rope twisting press to the mat for a nearfall. Komander hit a mid-ring Spanish Fly for a nearfall. Soberano hit another piledriver along his back, then a sit-out piledriver for the pin. Fun action.
Soberano Jr. defeated Komander at 9:19.
8. Barbaro Cavernario vs. Bandido. Bandido wore his ROH World Title belt. Veda said this is a first-time-ever singles match. They twisted each other’s arms, and Cavernario bit Bandido’s fingers! Bandido hit a huracanrana. Barbaro dove through the ropes and crashed onto Bandido at 2:30. Bandido hit his own dive through the ropes. In the ring, he went for a springboard move, but Cavernario caught him with a dropkick. Cavernario hit a running kick to the spine, and he took control. On the floor, he whipped Bandido into the guardrail at 4:30.
In the ring, Barbaro hit some loud overhand chops. He jawed at ref Aubrey Edwards, who didn’t back down. Barbaro hit more chops and was in control. Bandido hit a top-rope twisting body block, then two backbreakers over his knee at 8:30. Bandido stood on the ring post and hit a moonsault to the floor on Cavernario! In the ring, Bandido hit a Gorilla Press, then a frog splash for a nearfall at 10:00. Cavernario hit a hammerlock suplex for a nearfall. They again fought to the floor. Cavernario leapt off the top rope and hit a frog splash to the floor at 12:00. OUCH! (We saw replays, and of course, there is no ‘give’ on the floor.)
In the ring, Cavernario got the crowd fired up. He went for a splash but Bandido got his feet up to block it. They were both down at 13:30. They got up and traded strikes. Bandido tied him into a Torture Rack and hit a modified Go To Sleep. He went for the 21 Plex but Cavernario blocked it. Barbaro hit a Vader Bomb using the ropes (not from the corner). Barbaro hit a low blow and rolled up Bandido for the tainted pin! The commentators agreed that Cavernario may have just earned an ROH World Title shot.
Barbaro Cavernario defeated Bandido at 15:31.
9. Kevin Knight vs. Titan for the AEW TNT Title. Knight hit a dropkick at the bell and stomped on Titan in the corner. Veda said these two are 1-1 in prior singles matches. Knight hit a springboard clothesline to the floor. Back in the ring, Kevin tugged on the mask and was booed. Titan hit a springboard crossbody block at 4:00. He hit a plancha to the floor. Titan hit another dive to the floor that sent Kevin into the front row. In the ring, Titan applied a Trailer Hitch leg lock. They got up and traded overhand chops. Titan hit a spin kick to the jaw, and they were both down at 7:30.
Knight hit a Frankensteiner and a splash to the mat for a nearfall. He went for the UFO (twisting frog splash), but Titan got his legs up. Titan slammed Knight to the mat and hit a top-rope double stomp to the chest for a nearfall at 9:30. Titan went back to the Trailer Hitch leg lock! He leaned back to grab Kevin’s head and turn it into a Muta Lock! Knight finally reached the ropes. Titan hit a Pele Kick. Knight ran down the ramp, grabbed Titan’s head, and hit a stunner into the ring at 11:30. Knight hit a coast-to-coast dropkick for a nearfall. This time he hit the UFO frog splash and scored the clean pin.
Kevin Knight defeated Titan to retain the AEW TNT Title at 12:18.
10. Kyle Fletcher (w/Don Callis) vs. Mascara Dorada. Callis got on the mic and mixed some English and Spanish. (This is probably what I sound like when I try to speak Spanish these days!) Fletcher’s title was NOT on the line. Kyle knocked him down and posed, and that got a lot of boos. Dorada hit a huracanrana, then a twisting plancha to the floor. Fletcher hit a bodyslam in the ring, climbed the ropes to pose again at 3:30, and got even more boos. He tugged at Dorada’s mask.
Dorada hit a huracanrana. He hit a springboard twisting moonsault to the floor at 5:00. In the ring, Dorada hit a twisting neckbreaker for a nearfall. He missed a running Shooting Star Press, but he hit a mid-ring Spanish Fly for a nearfall at 6:30. Dorada hit a Code Red for a nearfall. Fletcher hit a powerbomb for a nearfall, and they were both down at 8:30. Dorada hit a Crucifix Driver, then a springboard Canadian Destroyer for a nearfall, but Kyle got his feet on the ropes.
Dorada hit a 450 Splash for a nearfall at 10:30. Dorada missed a Shooting Star Press but landed on his feet. However, Fletcher immediately hit a running knee to the back! Kyle hit a snake-eyes and a flying kick, then a brainbuster for the pin! A very good match but much shorter than I expected.
Kyle Fletcher defeated Mascara Dorada at 11:53.
Final Thoughts: Some really good action. I’ll take Bandido’s match for top of the night, ahead of the main event. A really sharp opener with two guys I’d never heard of before dazzled and got the show off on the right path, and they earned third. I love everything Blake Christian is doing these days, and I’ll go with his tag match for honorable mention.
I’ll just never be a fan of Yujiro Takahashi, and the HoT tag match was the lone dull spot of the night.
