1. Adrian Jaoude beat Josh Briggs. I’m off to a bad start as a recapper, tuning in late (I knew the show started at 8pm, but I thought Livonia, Michigan was in the Central Time Zone, which meant I had until 9pm Eastern) and missing this match. I’m told that Austin Theory attacked Briggs after the match and Nate Webb made the save to build toward his and Theory’s championship match on Saturday night.
2. Steven Pena defeated Liam Gray. Okay, I guess they’re doing a “losing streak” angle with The Skulk. I guess it’s fine as long as
it gives talented guys like Pena a chance to get over.
3. Babatunde beat Adrian Alanis. Yeah, they weren’t going to let Alanis pull a huge upset here. The Skulk’s losing streak continues, and the tag match against Ohno and Bravado probably isn’t going to change that.
4. Anthony Greene over Stephen Wolf. Greene’s rise up the card begins, and Wolf gives a performance of the “valiant effort” variety.
5. Anthony Henry defeated Juntai. Henry is the top guy in another WWN promotion and Juntai’s just a rookie. Henry continues his gradual heel turn, which I believe is leading toward a falling out with babyface partner JD Drake. His frustration is alive and well, as Juntai had a few moments where it looked like he might score an upset on Henry, distracted with self-disgust.
6. AR Fox and Leon Ruff beat Kassius Ohno and Harlem Bravado. The Skulk’s slump is over. It should be noted that it was Bravado, not NXT guest Ohno, who not-surprisingly took the fall. Evolve needs to establish more tag teams than The Unwanted and the possibly-soon-disbanding Work Horsemen, so it makes sense to give Fox and Ruff a bit of momentum.
7. Brandi Lauren beat Randi West. Squash. Shotzi Blackheart attacked after the match, but all she really does is just tell Lauren the
division is hers.
8. Curt Stallion over Eddie Kingston. I didn’t have a lot of confidence in picking Stallion to win this match beforehand, but it paid off! Stallion looked sickly, like he’s fighting a fever or something. Hopefully it’s just weird lighting.
9. JD Drake defeated Joe Gacy to retain the WWN Championship. Drake and Henry (but mostly Drake) have momentum going into their title shot against The Unwanted tomorrow night, where I suspect things will finally fall apart between the partners. After the match, Gacy and Kingston beat down Drake, but he’s saved by Babatunde, who was called out by The Unwanted before the match. Not sure what calling out Babatunde is supposed to accomplish, but The Unwanted got his attention.
10. Adam Cole beat Austin Theory. Cole won with a distraction from Nate Webb, who seems to have Theory’s number.
Final Thoughts: Evolve delivered a fine show for a small crowd. Theory and Cole delivered a well-received main event, somewhat surprising given that it was after 11pm when it started. But my favorite match was Drake vs. Gacy, where both men pushed themselves to their athletic limits and gave us some unexpectedly harrowing nearfalls. I’ll be back tomorrow to review Evolve 128.
