Live Pro Wrestling “Back 2 School Bash”

This streamed on Thursday on promoter Ted Goodz’ YouTube channel.
* A video aired where a 12-year-old boy gave Sidney Bakabella the “Dave’s Hot Chicken” Title belt. The kid didn’t want it, but Sidney shouted that he was “the king of the world!”
* To the venue. This is a basic, small ballroom. It’s fairly packed with a crowd of 200. Lighting is decent. Google Maps shows that Swansea is on the southern tip of Massachusetts, south of Boston. (It is essentially part of the metro area for Providence, Rhode Island.) Ring announcer Rich Palladino joined in on commentary, too.
1. DJ Powers vs. Aaron Rourke. Cagematch.net records show Powers is 1-0 in singles matches. A clean tie-up at the bell, and they are roughly the same height and overall size. DJ, always the heel, rolled to the floor and stalled. In the ring, they traded quick rollups. DJ began targeting Rourke’s left arm. Rourke hit a Russian leg sweep at 3:00, then a flipping senton for a nearfall. Powers hit a swinging neckbreaker for a nearfall at 5:00, then a neckbreaker over his knee, and he kept Aaron grounded.
They traded chops, Rourke hit a hard clothesline at 7:30, and they were both down. They got up and traded punches. Rourke hit some jab punches, then some hard back elbows. He nailed a superkick at 9:00, then a German Suplex, and he kipped up to a big ovation. (Family-friendly crowds are great!) Powers hit a Pedigree for a nearfall at 10:30. They went onto the ring apron and traded LOUD overhand chops, and DJ hit a superkick.
Aaron flipped DJ back into the ring, and he hit a snap suplex. He applied a vertical Texas Cloverleaf, but DJ rolled out of it. Powers hit a second-rope Styles Clash for a believable nearfall at 12:30! This has been really good. The crowd rallied for Rourke. DJ stomped on him in the corner. Rourke nailed a spinning jumping knee to Powers’ chin and scored the pin. A hot opener.
Aaron Rourke defeated DJ Powers at 14:06.
2. “Shot Through The Heart” Love, Doug and TJ Crawford vs. “The Shooter Boys” Anthony Vecchio and Aaron Ortiz for the Live Pro Tag Team Titles. The Boys can no longer team in Wrestling Open, but this match predates that (and of course, this is a separate promotion). Vecchio and Doug opened with some good, basic reversals. Ortiz entered and hit a leaping DDT on Doug at 2:00. The champs hit a team Bulldog on Ortiz. The champs hit stereo bodyslams and stereo falling punches at 4:30. Doug dove through the ropes onto Vecchio.
The Shooter Boys kept Doug grounded and in their corner, and the crowd rallied for Doug. Crawford finally got a hot tag at 7:30, and he cleared the ring, hitting some dropkicks. He hit a Northern Lights Suplex on Ortiz for a nearfall. Vecchio hit a pop-up powerbomb on TJ, and Ortiz hit a Falcon Arrow. Doug threw petals into Vecchio’s face, and it allowed TJ to slam Vecchio to the mat. The champs hit a team Tombstone Piledriver on Vecchio for the pin! Good action; these guys all know each other so well.
“Shot Through The Heart” Love, Doug and TJ Crawford defeated “The Shooter Boys” Anthony Vecchio and Aaron Ortiz to retain the Live Pro Tag Team Titles at 9:47.
* Sidney Bakabella came to the ring with the “Dave’s Hot Chicken” Title belt over his shoulder. He’s defending it tonight! (Again, a kid gave it to him on the playground.) He said this belt is on the line 24/7!
3. Sidney Bakabella vs. CPA for the Dave’s Hot Chicken Title. CPA took time to shake hands with the fans in the front row. We got the bell, and Sidney removed his robe to show off his black one-strap singlet. Comedy stuff to open. CPA peeled off a shirt (but of course he has another one on underneath). CPA hit a frog splash for a nearfall at 6:00. Sidney’s “son” was distracting the ref. Sidney tossed a chair to CPA and collapsed to the mat for “The Eddie Spot.” CPA put the chair over his own head and collapsed. More comedy. CPA hit the 1099 (Comedy 619) for the pin. The crowd enjoyed this humor, but it was completely lost on me.
CPA defeated Sidney Bakabella to win the Dave’s Hot Chicken Title at 9:07.
* Seconds later, Sidney rolled up Sidney for the pin, and he fled to the back with the belt.
4. Ava Everett vs. Liviyah. As per usual, teenager Liviyah is the babyface. Cagematch.net records show this is Ava’s first match of the month and just No. 20 of the year. They are 1-1 in prior singles matches. We got the bell, but then they took turns playing to the crowd. Ava is maybe 5’9″ and an inch taller. Liv hit a series of clotheslines into the corner, then a release suplex at 2:00. Ava threw Liv head-first into the top turnbuckle and took control. She choked Liv in the ropes.
Liviyah hit another snap suplex at 3:30. Ava hit a swinging neckbreaker for a nearfall. Liviyah hit a series of clotheslines and a leaping shoulder tackle at 5:00, then a German Suplex for a nearfall. She went for her implant DDT, but Ava hit another swinging neckbreaker for a nearfall. Liv hit a standing powerbomb, and she hit her implant DDT for the pin. Solid action; good to see Ava back in the ring.
Liviyah defeated Ava Everett at 6:29.
* A gauntlet match is next! Erik ChaCha is the defending “Man of Steel” champion.
5a. Erik ChaCha vs. Jose Zamora. Zamora has his ever-present cameras recording his life 24/7. ChaCha is pretty talented, but he’s only around 5’3″. Erik hit some chops. Zamora rolled to the floor and played with his camera and talked to it. He’s so vain! In the ring, ChaCha hit a roundhouse kick to the chest for a nearfall at 2:30. Zamora hit a Lungblower to the back for a nearfall.
Zamora rolled to the floor, so ChaCha dove onto him at 5:30. In the ring, Erik hit a stunner and a series of Yes Kicks. Erik hit a springboard Disaster Kick for a nearfall. He missed a move into the corner; Zamora immediately got a schoolboy rollup with a handful of tights for the tainted pin. Solid match.
Jose Zamora defeated Erik ChaCha at 6:41.
5b. Leon St. Giovanni vs. Jose Zamora. Jose attacked LSG as he entered the ring. LSG hit a dropkick for a nearfall. Zamora dropped LSG snake-eyes in the corner and got a nearfall at 2:00. Jose choked him in the ropes and was in charge. LSG hit a stunner and an enzuigiri at 4:00. Jose got a rollup the same way he won the first mini-match! LSG suplexed Zamora for the pin.
Leon St. Giovanni defeated Jose Zamora at 4:48.
5c. Leon St. Giovanni vs. Trigga the OG. Trigga immediately ran in and attacked LSG, giving him no time to catch his breath. LSG backed him into a corner and threw some punches. LSG went to hit Trigga with Trigga’s chain, but the ref confiscated it. Trigga punched LSG and pinned him. Too short to amount to much.
Trigga the OG defeated Leon St. Giovanni at 1:10.
5d. Trigga the OG vs. Brandon Webb. Webb wore his face paint and full-body costume. He charged in, and they immediately brawled. Webb hit a Lungblower to the chest, then a backbreaker over his knee. Webb went for a Lionsault Press, but Trigga got his knees up to block it, and he rolled Webb over for the pin. Usually, the last leg of a gauntlet is the best match, but definitely not here.
Trigga the OG defeated Brandon Webb at 1:44 to win the Man of Steel Title.
6. Brett Ryan Gosselin vs. Marcus Mathers for the Live Pro Title. Mathers wore his blue-and-pink gear. They circled each other before finally locking up at 1:00, and Marcus shoved him to the mat, and Brett rolled to the floor to regroup. In the ring, BRG hit some chops. Marcus hit his dropkick to the face at 3:00, then a running Penalty Kick on the ring apron. BRG accidentally chopped the ring post. Brett slammed Marcus back-first on the apron at 4:30, and he repeatedly stomped on Mathers on the floor. In the ring, BRG was in charge and kept Marcus grounded. Mathers fired up and threw some punches.
Brett hit a Russian leg sweep for a nearfall at 6:30, and he hit a backbreaker over his knee for a nearfall. Mathers was selling the heck out of that back injury already! BRG kept him grounded in a headlock. Mathers hit a second-rope twisting crossbody block at 10:00 but continued to sell the pain in his lower back. He hit some bodyslams and was fired up! He hit the corner fadeaway stunner and a Blue Thunder Bomb for a nearfall. BRG hit some blows to the kidneys and lower back. Mathers nailed his Ospreay-style heel hook kick to the jaw at 12:00.
Marcus went to the top turnbuckle, but BRG shook the ropes, causing Mathers to fall and be crotched. BRG hit a second-rope superplex for a nearfall, and they were both down. Mathers hit a back-body drop. BRG hit a back suplex at 13:30. Mathers hit a Death Valley Driver for a nearfall. They got up and traded punches. Marcus accidentally struck Ref Scott Robinson! He hit the heel hook kick to BRG’s jaw for a visual pin at 15:30, but we had no ref! BRG struck Mathers with his title belt and got the tainted pin. Loud boos for that finish.
Brett Ryan Gosselin defeated Marcus Mathers to retain the Live Pro Title at 16:19.
* “Star Struck” Channing Thomas and Anthony Greene came to the ring. Star Struck wore kids’ birthday cone hats, as it was Greene’s birthday. Channing got on the mic and wished his partner a happy birthday, but then he berated some kids in the crowd for talking! “You’re ruining his birthday!” Channing shouted. We had more birthday antics. We still did NOT know who they would be facing! Teddy Goodz and LMK ran in and attacked them and we’re underway!
7. “Star Struck” Channing Thomas and Anthony Greene vs. Teddy Goodz and Little Mean Kathleen. Goodz “retired” at the end of last year, but he competed on the last show, too! I was watching the Action Wrestling show from Georgia last fall when LMK blew out her knee, and I believe this is her first match back. A commentator just confirmed she hasn’t wrestled since last August. Kathleen flexed, and Greene was hesitant to lock up. Goodz finally tied up with AG a minute after the bell.
LMK entered, and she twisted Greene’s arm and bit it! She backed Anthony into a corner and hit a chop. The muscular Goodz entered and hit a harder chop. The babyfaces then hit stereo chops. Goodz bodyslammed each of the heels, and he picked up the ref, too! LMK coaxed him into setting down the ref for some good humor. Star Struck began stomping on Goodz and worked him over in their corner. LSG got the hot tag at 8:00, and she hit a huracanrana. She ran up Greene’s chest and hit a bulldog for a nearfall.
Kathleen hit a DDT-and-Flatliner combo on the heels. Goodz hit an Iconoclasm, flipping one heel onto the other, for a nearfall at 10:00. Sidney Bakabella ran into the ring and struck Goodz across the back, but Teddy no-sold it. LMK ripped off Sidney’s wig. However, the interference allowed Channing to hit a flying elbow drop on LMK for a nearfall. Kathleen flipped Channing towards Goodz, who hit a powerbomb on Channing! Both LMK and Goodz piled on Channing and pinned him. The crowd enjoyed the silliness.
Teddy Goodz and Little Mean Kathleen defeated “Star Struck” Teddy Goodz and Little Mean Kathleen at 11:14.
Final Thoughts: Unsurprisingly, the matches featuring the signed talents stood out. I’ll go with Mathers-BRG for best, just ahead of Powers-Rourke. Liv vs. Ava took third. Not sure how often we’ll continue to see the Shooter Boys team up, but that match takes honorable mention. Nothing must-see here, but that’s a pretty solid top four matches.
The main event was fun humor and it was great to see LMK back in the ring. I recall watching that Action show — Kathleen was hundreds of miles from home, and she just crumpled and went down with an awkward knee injury. She has been at nearly every show, providing commentary (she cannot stop laughing when she speaks. It’s endearing but also a bit annoying!) So, it’s great to see her back in the ring.
The gauntlet was a bit of a dud. A five-way scramble would have been far more entertaining and a better use of that time. I just couldn’t get into the silliness of Sidney vs. CPA today, but I’ll reiterate that the crowd was amused. More pluses than minuses. Check this out on YouTube.
