Paramount reached a legal settlement with a dozen State Attorneys General, clearing the way to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. Deadline.com reports that the deal includes financial penalties related to Paramount CEO David Ellison’s thirty movies per year commitment, as well as a period where the studios will remain separated. The Wall Street Journal reported that Paramount will avoid having to sell cable networks. Read more on the story at Deadline.com.
Powell’s POV: Only time will tell how Paramount acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery will affect AEW, whose WBD media rights deal expires at the end of 2027, though WBD has a one-year option that would allow them to extend the deal through 2028. If nothing else, Paramount finalizing the deal to acquire WBD should lead to Tony Khan getting a better sense of where his company stands with Paramount. Khan has spoken positively about Paramount acquiring WBD during media calls and press conferences. Khan has also mentioned that he has a good relationship with Paramount CEO David Ellison. That said, Paramount is the home of UFC and Zuffa Boxing events, making them business partners with TKO, the parent company of WWE.
