Paul “Triple H” Levesque spoke with Newsweek.com’s Tufayel Ahmed about the WWE UK Championship that will be introduced during a two-day tournament in January. Levesque was asked how the title will be defended. “We’re seeing what this will become,” Levesque said. “It’s not a science yet. The hope is it becomes its own weekly show, based out of the U.K., with U.K. talent.
“Those talents will still be able to perform within the [independent companies] RevPros, ICWs and Progress’s. As those talents are working [in the U.K.] and moving up [in the industry], we’re helping RevPro, ICW and Progress to grow and help cultivate their talent pool as well. Before it was a pipedream that you’d make it beyond the U.K. or the indie scene to the WWE. Now there’s a clear path to do it.” Read the full interview at Newsweek.com.
Powell’s POV: I doubt Progress feels very excited about the idea of their company champion being booked for the tournament that will have its finals run opposite their own January 15 event. That said, it’s cool that the talent will get exposure, and if they do remain independent, that could truly help out the other promotions as long as the asking price of the talent doesn’t increase to the point that it’s not economically feasible for some of the promotions to use them. Hunter also spoke about Chyna and the WWE Hall of Fame, Linda McMahon joining Donald Trump’s cabinet, and more.
