C*4 Wrestling (Capital City Championship Combat) “For Love Of The Game”

Normally, these shows are released on Tuesdays, but it was delayed as they needed to fix some technical issues. So, it was released on Friday (Sept. 25) on IWTV. Anyhow, this is always one of my favorite venues; it’s new, clean, and well-lit, and they always draw maybe 500 eager fans.
* Again, I knew they had some technical issues. Watching this broadcast, there were many times I could not hear the commentary team at all over the sound of the loud fans and the action.
1. KJ Swayde vs. Shimbashi vs. Devious Cass vs. Juni Underwood in a four-way. All four fought at the bell. Shimbashi is here from the Texas scene, while Cass and Juni caravaned together to this show from the Northeast. KJ knocked Cass down with a shoulder tackle. Cass suplexed him into the turnbuckles and got a nearfall at 2:00. Juni hit a short-arm clothesline. He hit a corner plancha to the floor on Cass. Shimbashi dove through the ropes onto Swayde at 3:30. Cass hit a twisting dive through the ropes. Juni hit a Flatliner in the ring. Cass hit a modified Blue Thunder Bomb for a nearfall.
Juni and Shimbashi fought on the apron on one side, while Swayde and Cass were also fighting on the apron on the other side of the ring. Cass and Juni got back in the ring and traded reversals. They hit stereo Mafia Kicks at 6:30. Shimbashi and Swayde hit stereo top-rope elbow drops for stereo nearfalls. Cass hit an Ospreay-style heel hook kick to Swayde’s jaw, then he hit a DVD into the turnbuckles on Swayde. Shimbashi hit a cannonball and a gutbuster double knees. Juni hit the Flamingo Driver on Shimbashi, but Cass broke it up. KJ hit a flying Fame-asser on Cass for the pin. That was a lot of fun.
KJ Swayde defeated Shimbashi, Devious Cass, and Juni Underwood in a four-way at 8:53.
* A ring announcer opened the main show and talked about Andy “The Butcher” Williams, noting he competed here in June. We then had the 10-bell memorial salute. The ring announcer noted this is the start of C*4 Wrestling’s 19th season!
2. Vaughn Vertigo vs. Effy for the C*4 Underground Title. I always note that Effy is deceptively tall and thick, and he has a clear size advantage as they locked up. Effy hit a Helluva Kick. Vaughn hit a standing moonsault for a nearfall at 3:00. Effy bit a nipple and hit a Northern Lights Suplex, then a Whoopee Cushion buttdrop, then another one. Vaughn hit a half-nelson suplex at 5:00. Effy hit a second-rope Blockbuster.
Effy used his leg to drag Vaughn to the mat and got a nearfall. Brian, a guy in a modified HAZMAT suit, came to the ring and shouted about communicable diseases and said there would be NO kissing in this match. Effy took Brian’s mask off and teased he was going to kiss him. Effy applied a Dragon Sleeper. Dreya Mitchell appeared and distracted the ref. Effy forcibly kissed Vaughn! However, Vaughn hit a low-blow kick, then a Shining Wizard, for the tainted pin. Brian’s appearance was pointless.
Vaughn Vertigo defeated Effy to retain the C*4 Underground Title at 8:08.
3. Jody Threat vs. Dreya Mitchell vs. Layla Wilde in a three-way. Dreya is tall and impressive; I’ve noted she should be getting booked in Maple Leaf Pro. Wilde is still raw and green, but she’s a powerhouse similar to ODB, Jordynne Grace, or Gabby Forza. They opened in a three-way knuckle lock. Jody tried a double shoulder block, but no one budged. Layla scooped up Jody and ran her back-first into the corner at 2:00. Layla hit an impressive double suplex! Dreya hit a Helluva Kick on Layla. Dreya hit a Samoan Drop-and-fallaway slam combo at 4:00.
They all fought on the floor. In the ring, Jody missed a senton. Layla missed a standing moonsault. Layla missed a splash onto both of them, and everyone was down at 5:30. Jody hit a kick to the side of Layla’s head. Jody hit a double German Suplex for a nearfall. All three traded forearm strikes. Jody hit a Michinoku Driver on Dreya. Layla hit a pop-up powerbomb on Jody for a nearfall at 7:30. Dreya hit a running double crossbody block. Dreya hit a fisherman’s powerbomb and pinned Wilde. That was pretty good for the time given.
Dreya Mitchell defeated Jody Threat at Layla Wilde in a three-way at 8:21.
4. Cecil Nyx, Puf, Xander Orion, “Northern Thunder” London Lightning and Storm Ryder vs. Johnny Deluca, “Locked N’ Loaded” Mark Wheeler and Jessie V, “Project 8100” Dexter Doom and Haddy in a 10-man tag. Nyx and Wheeler opened, but all the heels ran in and stomped on Cecil. Project 8100 and Northern Thunder jumped in the ring, and they brawled. Orion hit a leg drop between Wheeler’s legs, then a standing neckbreaker for a nearfall.
Puf tagged in at 4:00 and hit a swinging faceplant on Wheeler, then some jab punches. Puf took off a sandal, and he struck Doom with it, then Deluca, then Jessie V. Nyx hit a slingshot splash into the ring. Northern Thunder hit a team slam on Haddy at 6:00. Wheeler jumped in and hit a Flatliner. Orion hit a DDT on Wheeler. Doom hit a Black Hole Slam on Orion. Lightning hit a spinebuster. Jessie V scooped up London, held him above his head, then hit a DVD.
Puf got in and traded punches with Jessie V, and the 400+ pounder clotheslined Jessie V to the floor. Orion and Nyx hit stereo inverted DDTs. Doom hit a Russian Leg Sweep on Nyx. Northern Thunder and Project 8100 again traded blows. Haddy accidentally hit Doom! Jessie V slammed Ryder. Lightning hit a flip dive to the floor at 10:00. In the ring, Doom got a flash rollup with a handful of tights for the tainted pin! That finish came out of absolutely nowhere!
Johnny Deluca & “Locked N’ Loaded” Mark Wheeler and Jessie V, “Project 8100” Dexter Doom and Haddy defeated Cecil Nyx, Puf, Xander Orion, and “Northern Thunder” London Lightning and Storm Ryder at 10:20.
5. “Violence Is Forever” Kevin Ku and Dominic Garrini vs. “Mano Po” Teo Dakilia and Tekla Easyy Joey. I have never heard of the Mano Po duo; they are young and scrawny with tassels on their arms like the Ultimate Warrior. ViF came out first. Ku opened for his team, and he has a significant height and overall size advantage over Teo, who wore red. Joey, with white-and-blue trunks, entered but Garrini tossed him around. Ku hit a LOUD chop at 3:30 that had Joey grabbing his chest. ViF worked Joey over in their corner. Joey hit an enzuigiri at 5:30.
Teo got a hot tag. (I really wish the commentary audio was better.) He traded chops with Ku. Kevin and Teo hit stereo clotheslines and were both down at 8:30. Joey got a hot tag and fought Garrini. Joey hit a top-rope crossbody block for a nearfall. Teo hit a top-rope flying elbow drop. He hit a plancha to the floor at 10:00. In the ring, the newcomers hit some quick team offense on Garrini. ViF hit a Chasing the Dragon for a nearfall, but the bell sounded so there was some confusion. Joey hit a German Suplex for a nearfall. VIF hit a second Chasing the Dragon (spin kick-and-brainbuster combo) for the pin. Decent. The Mano Po duo got a “Please come back!” chant.
“Violence Is Forever” Kevin Ku and Dominic Garrini defeated “Mano Po” Teo Dakilia and Tekla Easyy Joey at 11:41.
6. Marcus Mathers vs. Stu Grayson. Stu’s MLP Interim Canadian Title was over his shoulder, and he got a nice pop. The commentators said this is a first-time-ever match. They traded basic reversals early and dropkicks. Stu hit his slingshot senton onto the apron at 2:00. Mathers hit his mule kick to the jaw at 3:30, then a suplex. They got up and traded loud chops, and Marcus hit a bodyslam. Stu hit a release belly-to-belly suplex at 5:00, then another one! Stu hit a hard clothesline to the back of the head and was in charge.
Stu hit another overhead belly-to-belly suplex, and Mathers sold the pain of the move. Mathers hit a top-rope crossbody block, but Stu hit another clothesline at 7:30. Mathers fired back with a German Suplex and a discus clothesline, then his corner fadeaway stunner and Blue Thunder Bomb for a nearfall. They traded European Uppercuts, then some chops. Stu hit a Flatliner. He went for a Lionsault, but Mathers got his knees up. Marcus hit a Death Valley Driver for a nearfall, and they were both down at 10:00.
Stu set up for a DDT on the apron, but they both fell to the floor; that didn’t go according to plan! They rolled back into the ring, and Mathers hit his Ospreay-style heel hook kick to the jaw. Stu fired back with a top-rope superplex at 11:30 and a running knee to the chin, then the Nightfall (Torture Rack-into-a-backbreaker over the knee) for the pin. Sharp, sharp match.
Stu Grayson defeated Marcus Mathers at 11:51.
7. Joey Janela vs. The Blade. I’ve actually seen these two fight twice already this year! Joey came out first; Blade marched in and they began trading forearm strikes, with Blade still wearing his black cap and long black trenchcoat! The commentators said Andy Williams would have wanted Blade to be out here and fighting like this. Blade hit a DDT onto the ring apron at 1:00. Blade stomped on him on the floor and was in control early on. Joey hit a running knee to the sternum as Blade was seated in a chair at 3:30, and they continued to fight deep into the crowd.
In the ring, Joey hit a superkick for a nearfall, then a suplex at 5:00. Blade hit a powerslam for a nearfall. Joey hit two stunners and a Dragon Suplex for a nearfall. Blade hit a second-rope superplex at 7:00, and they were both down. They got up and traded loud chops. Blade hit a spear. They are working at a more urgent pace tonight; Janela’s matches are usually a bit more deliberate in pace and style. Blade pushed a door and chairs in the ring. However, Joey hit a chairshot to the back at 9:00, and Janela set up a door bridge.
Joey missed a top-rope twisting moonsault and crashed through the door bridge! Blade immediately hit a twisting neckbreaker for a nearfall at 10:30. Joey hit a DVD across an open chair for a nearfall. Joey hit a top-rope double stomp to the gut for a nearfall. Blade was standing on an open chair, and he hit a Cradle Shock onto the open chair for a nearfall, then a clothesline for another nearfall at 12:30, and we got a “This is awesome!” chant.
Blade went under the ring and got another door. This one featured a painting of Andy Williams with the words “Rest In Peace.” Cool. Big ovation as the fans saw that, and it was set up in the corner. The crowd chanted, “Andy!” as Blade and Joey traded forearm strikes. Janela hit a suplex through the painted door for a nearfall at 14:30, and the crowd POPPED for the kickout. (No one thought Blade could be pinned on that one, right?) They got up and traded furious forearm strikes! Blade hit two clotheslines for the pin. WOW. Chills.
The Blade defeated Joey Janela at 15:12.
* They hugged. They put the cracked door up (it cracked but hadn’t broken in half). Blade got on the mic and talked about how much Andy loved pro wrestling, and he would be happy everyone is here tonight. Joey and Blade left the ring, leaving the cracked door behind, and the crowd chanted “Andy!”
8. Shelton Jean vs. Mathieu St. Jacques vs. Gabriel Fuerza vs. Junior Benito vs. James Stone vs. Macrae Martin in a 30-minute challenge for the C*4 Men’s Title. “Fresh Air” teammates Benito and Martin will work together, right? Shelton, the champion, came out last. The commentators explained that whoever got the last pinfall in the 30-minute match will leave as champion, so there could be many pinfalls. All six brawled at the bell, and they were all fighting on the floor; no tags in this one. Sheldon and Junior got in the ring, and Benito hit a basement dropkick at 2:00.
Stone hit some chops on Benito, and a double suplex on the Fresh Air duo. Martin hit a fallaway slam on Stone for a nearfall at 4:00. St. Jacques got in and traded forearm strikes with Macrae. Fuerza hit an armdrag and a dropkick on Mathieu. Sheldon slammed Benito. The commentators talked about how to strategize this match, and whether you should even be in the ring early on. Macrae tossed teammate Benito onto Fuerza for a nearfall. Macrae hit a sidewalk slam at 8:00. Benito went for a pin, but Macrae broke it up! “There are no friends in this,” a commentator said.
Mathieu and Stone got in the ring and traded forearm strikes. My stopwatch had 10:00 exactly as we got a “20 minutes remaining” call, so we are in sync. Benito hit a 450 Splash and got a pin at 12:54! He hit a Vader Bomb on St. Jacques. Fuerza rolled up Benito and got a pin at 13:58! The crowd went from chanting “You deserve it!” at Benito to chanting it at Gabriel. Funny. St. Jacques got a door and began striking everyone with it. Stone hit a powerslam for a nearfall. Macrae and Benito traded punches! Macrae hit a leaping Flatliner for a nearfall at 17:00.
St. Jacques got in and hit spinebusters on everyone! (Yes, everyone got a spinebuster). Big pop as he completed the sequence. He hit a piledriver on Benito. Sheldon speared St. Jacques through a door and got a pin at 19:09! Can he hold on for 11 more minutes? Sheldon rammed Mathieu’s head into the ring post. The “10 minutes” remaining call was right on. Those two got back into the ring and brawled. Mathieu hit a stunner. Benito hit a stunner. Fuerza hit a Lethal Injection and a running Shooting Star Press for a nearfall. Suddenly, everyone was down at 21:30.
Macrae hit a dive to the floor. Sheldon hit a dive to the floor, and we got a “This is awesome!” chant. Benito hit a running dive over the ring post, earning a “Holy shit!” chant. In the ring, Stone hit a piledriver on Jean and got a pin at 23:40. Gabriel immediately rolled up Stone and got a pin at 24:04. He hit piledriver on Benito, but Stone broke it up. Benito hit a Blue Thunder Bomb and pinned Stone at 25:14. Macrae hit an Iconoclasm and pinned Benito at 25:32. Mathieu got a nearfall on Macrae.
Jean struck Gabriel with a weapon and pinned him at 26:20. Mathieu hit a powerbomb on Jean and locked in a Texas Cloverleaf! However, Stone punched Mathieu several times, but St. Jacques refused to let go of the Cloverleaf! Stone eventually hit Mathieu with a chair, and that led to him letting go. Stone and Benito traded chops; no one else was in the ring at 29:30! Stone hit a piledriver. He went for a cover, but Jean pulled the ref out of the ring and beat up the ref! Jean fled to the back with his title!
Shelton Jean defeated Mathieu St. Jacques, Gabriel Fuerza, Junior Benito, James Stone, and Macrae Martin to retain the C*4 Men’s Title at 30:00.
9. Alexia Nicole vs. Kristara for the C*4 Women’s Title. Again, Alexia is only about 4’11”, and Kristara is 5’4″. They immediately tied up on the mat. Nicole dropped her with a shoulder tackle. They traded rollups, then traded armdrags, and had a standoff at 2:00. They shook hands, but then Nicole kicked her in the ribs. They went to the floor, and Nicole hit some chops. She put Kristara on a chair and hit a running double knees, tipping the chair over at 4:30. They continued to loop ringside before Nicole threw her back in.
Nicole hit a shotgun dropkick, a Meteora, and a suplex. Nicole hit a sideslam for a nearfall at 6:30. She hit a running neckbreaker for a nearfall, and she got a Muta Lock and cranked back on Kristara’s head. They took turns slamming each other’s head into the mat. Kristara hit a Northern Lights Suplex for a nearfall at 9:00. Nicole hit a Widow’s Peak neckbreaker for a nearfall! Kristara got a rollup for a nearfall. Nicole hit a Lungblower to the chest for a nearfall at 11:00, and they were both down.
Kristara hit a suplex, then a running side kick to the head. Nicole put her in an Octopus Stretch, and they fell to the mat with the hold locked in. Nicole hit a Lungblower to the back for a nearfall. A door bridge was set up in the ring. Nicole tried a superplex, but Kristara blocked it. However, Nicole hit an Electric Chair drop through the door bridge and got a nearfall at 15:30! Kristara hit a buzzsaw kick, then two Shining Wizards for the pin! New champion! The crowd popped for the title switch!
Kristara defeated Alexia Nicole to win the C*4 Women’s Title at 16:20.
Final thoughts: Blade and Janela had already had two great matches this year, but they worked at a faster pace tonight with more urgency. The drama over the Butcher’s death was hanging in the air, and the crowd’s reaction to that painted door almost brought me to tears. What an emotional match. Yes, that’s match of the show.
Any other event, Mathers-Stu is best match, but that’s second place tonight. I thoroughly enjoyed the 30-minute challenge, and that takes third, just ahead of a really strong main event. The last four matches of this show were sharp. Kristara and Nicole had three tough matches to follow, and they delivered in the main event. I love that we live in an era where women are put in that position because they earned the spot, and they show they can deliver in the main event.
The first five matches were all fine but nothing must-see. The newcomers Mano Po were decent. Everyone else here is a regular. If you don’t have time for the full show, at least check out the final four matches.
I love C*4 Wrestling because of the attractive venue and good lighting, and a great young core. I’ve noted that I’d love to see Maple Leaf Pro start using London Lightning, Storm Ryder, Kristara, Dreya Mitchell, Junior Benito, and Macrae Martin. All six of those competitors again showed why they are on my short list of top-tier Canadian up-and-coming talents.
