Google Maps shows this city is on the very southern tip of Texas, near the border with Mexico. (It is about a 3.5-hour drive straight south of San Antonio). Corey Graves, JBL, and Rey Mysterio provided commentary.
* We saw several wrestlers arrive at the building.
1. Lince Dorado, Joaquín Wilde, Cruz Del Toro, and Mini Abysmo vs. Negro Axiom, Noisy Boy, Mascarita Segrada, and Mr. Iguana in an eight-man tag. Axiom and Wilde opened with some fast-paced reversals. Noisy Boy entered and hit a superkick on Cruz, then a huracanrana. Rey and Graves put over Noisy Boy’s rise in recent months. The short Segrada tagged in at 2:30, and he hit some chops on Dorado. Lince went for a Gorilla Press, but Mascarita escaped. Iguana entered and hit a huracanrana and some armdrags on Dorado.
Mini Abysmo Negro hit a splash to the floor; JBL questioned how he could be called a “mini.” Lince hit a dive to the floor at 4:30. Back in the ring, Dorado threw Mr. Iguana into his corner. Wilde and Del Toro hit a team suplex and were booed. (They aren’t cheating!) Negro hit a backbreaker over his knee. Dorado hit a clothesline for a nearfall at 6:00. Dorado missed a splash. Mascarita got a hot tag and hit a faceplant on Del Toro and a dropkick. Wilde missed a splash; Mascarita suplexed Wilde for a HUGE pop at 7:30. Mascarita spun Negro to the mat, but the ref said Negro wasn’t legal.
Axiom dove through the ropes. Noisy Boy hit a Poison Rana, then a springboard twisting splash to the floor! In the ring, Mascarita hit a satellite headscissors takedown on Negro at 9:00. Mascarita hit a double-jump flip dive to the floor. In the ring, Cruz missed a twisting moonsault. Iguana leapt on Cruz’s shoulders and slammed him to the mat for the pin. “The action was fast and furious,” Graves accurately said.
Axiom, Noisy Boy, Mascarita Segrada, and Mr. Iguana defeated Lince Dorado, Joaquín Wilde, Cruz Del Toro, and Mini Abysmo Negro at 9:45.
* A commercial aired for WWE/AAA/NXT Worlds Collide in Chicago on September 28, featuring CM Punk heavily. They certainly are indicating he’ll be in action that night! Sooooo many commercials when you watch a WWE event live!
* Flammer came to the ring, wearing a glittery black dress and her title belt over her shoulder. She sat down next to the Spanish announce team. We have a gauntlet match next, with the winner getting a women’s title shot! I don’t think the competitors were revealed.
2a. Adelicious vs. Lady Shani in the first leg of a gauntlet match to earn a Reina de Reinas Championship Match at TripleMania. Adelicious wore a red mask and a red one-piece. Graves noted she had one TV match back in February. Shani wore mostly white, with gold trim. They traded some armdrags. Adelicious hit a huracanrana at 1:00. Graves noted that Rey left the booth to take care of some business. Shani hit a Lungblower to the back. She hit a running Facewash in the corner for a nearfall. Adelicious did some flips and a spear into the corner at 2:30, but she missed a 450 Splash. Shani immediately tied her up, rolled her up, and got the pin.
Lady Shani defeated Adelicious at 2:56 to advance.
2b. Ladi Shani vs. Thea Hail. Thea ran down the ramp and jumped in the ring. No bell, but I restarted the stopwatch at first contact. Thea hit a dropkick for a nearfall. She dove through the ropes. In the ring, she got a nearfall at 1:30. Shani applied a Boston Crab and turned it into a pendulum. She applied a cross-armbreaker. Thea missed a splash in the corner. Thea applied a cross-armbreaker in the ropes but let go at 3:30. Shani again rolled up her opponent on the mat, but Thea reversed it and got a flash pin!
Thea Hail defeated Lady Shani at 3:48 to advance.
2c. Thea Hail vs. La Catalina. La Catalina immediately hit a top-rope missile dropkick and a buttbump in the corner, then a fisherman’s suplex. “Curt Hennig would be proud!” JBL said. Thea targeted the left arm on the mat. She kicked Catalina’s hand and got a rollup for a nearfall at 1:30. Thea hit a knee drop on the left elbow. Catalina hit a second-rope crossbody block but sold the pain in her arm.
La Catalina hit a running knee to the back of Thea’s head at 3:00. Thea hit a Lumbar Check-style move on the damaged arm! She leapt into Catalina’s arms and applied a hammerlock. However, Catalina flipped her over and pinned Thea, even as the arm hold was still locked in place! No surprise these matches are fast-paced but short.
La Catalina defeated Thea Hail at 3:55 to advance.
2d. La Catalina vs. La Hiedra. Flammer stood up and looked perplexed and befuddled that her stablemate was in this match! Hiedra immediately hit a stiff kick to the spine. Hiedra hit a shoulder tackle for a nearfall. She shoved Catalina into the corner and kicked at Catalina’s damaged shoulder and arm. Catalina hit a dropkick at 2:30, then a springboard crossbody block to the floor.
Catalina snapped La Hiedra’s throat over the top rope. La Hiedra hit an Iconoclasm, flipping Catalina to the mat. She hit a Jaded-style implant buster faceplant for a nearfall at 4:00, and she barked at the ref. La Hiedra grabbed the women’s tag title belt, but the ref confiscated it. Catalina rolled her up for a nearfall. Flammer jumped in the ring with her title belt, but she accidentally hit La Hiedra! La Catalina shoved Flammer to the floor, then hit a running knee to La Hiedra’s chest for the pin!
La Catalina defeated La Hiedra at 4:55 to win the gauntlet and earn a Reina de Reinas Championship Match at TripleMania on September 13.
3. “The War Raiders” Erik and Ivar vs. “Los Americanos” Rayo and Bravo for the AAA Tag Team Titles. Erik and Rayo opened, with Rayo hitting a dropkick. Bravo entered, and they hit a flying team splash onto Erik. They crotched Erik around the ring post at 2:00! Ibar tagged in, and they beat down on Rayo in their corner. Erik hit his running knee and got a nearfall at 4:00. Bravo tagged in and hit a flying clothesline on Erik, then a big bodyslam. (It’s easy to forget how strong Tyler Bate is!)
Bravo hit a top-rope crossbody block. He hit a huracanrana on Ivar, then a dive to the floor on Erik. Rayo hit a Swanton Bomb on Erik for a nearfall at 6:30! Ivar got in and nailed a spinning heel kick on Bravo. Erik picked up Ivar and threw him onto Bravo in the corner for a nearfall. Rayo snapped Erik’s fingers! He hit a superkick on Ivar. Bravo hit a flying crossbody block on Ivar for a nearfall at 8:30, but Erik made the save. Bravo and Rayo unloaded some punches on Ivar. Ibar missed a Bronco Buster.
Los Americanos got Ibar on their shoulders; Erik pulled Rayo to the floor, but Bravo still held Ivar and did an airplane spin-into-a-powerbomb. Bravo hit a top-rope diving headbutt, but it knocked Bravo out! Ivar rolled Bravo over and pinned him! Corey Graves was perplexed at what just happened. The replay showed that Ivar had his title belt cradled in his arms, and Bravo’s head struck the belt on that diving headbutt!
“The War Raiders” Erik and Ivar defeated “Los Americanos” Rayo and Bravo to retain the AAA Tag Team Titles at 10:17.
* After a series of commercials, Chris Carter was in the ring. “Ever seen a man go to the gallows?” JBL asked. A nice vignette aired for El Carnicero! Again, that mask looks a LOT like Luchasaurus. I noted before that “carnicero” translates to “butcher” in English. (The internet is saying this is Drake Morreaux from LFG, and we know the internet is never wrong!) Rey Mysterio returned to the booth.
4. El Carnicero vs. Chris Carter. Carnicero jumped into the ring, wearing his bib overalls, and he splashed Carter in the corner, then hit some crossface blows. Carnicero tossed Carter over the top rope to the floor! “Rey, what have you done!” Graves shouted. Back in the ring, Carnicero hit a massive chokeslam. He repeatedly slammed Carter’s head into the mat, and the ref called for the bell.
El Carnicero defeated Chris Carter at 2:25.
* Graves was frantic, and he begged for someone in the back to come out and help. Murder Clown and Dave the Clown ran into the ring, but El Carnicero beat them up, too. Psycho Clown now ran into the ring with a kendo stick, and he repeatedly struck Carnicero with it. Psycho Clown got on the mic and challenged him to a Mexican street fight at Triplemania!
5. Jack Cartwheel vs. Nathan Frazer vs. Mini Vikingo in a Triple Threat No. 1 contender’s match for the AAA Cruiserweight Title. I’ll reiterate that Vikingo is 18 years old; he’s not a ‘mini’ in the classical sense. Jack is still wearing a brace covering his left elbow, which he dislocated over WrestleMania week. We got the bell, and they shook hands, as all are babyfaces. They traded quick rollups. Jack got a double Crucifix Driver. Graves just noted Jack’s elbow injury. Jack and Vikingo each did some cartwheels and had a standoff at 2:00.
Frazer hit some shoulder thrusts into Jack’s ribs. Jack was flipped to the floor, so Vikingo and Nathan traded quick reversals, and Frazer hit a running dropkick at 4:00, then a snap suplex for a nearfall. Jack hit a huracanrana on Frazer. Nathan hit a clothesline on MV. Jack hit a clothesline on Frazer and a dropkick on Mini Vikingo, and he got a nearfall on Frazer at 5:30. Mini Vikingo hit a spin kick on Frazer, then a springboard frog splash for a nearfall! He hit a dropkick that sent Nathan to the floor.
Mini Vikingo hit a twisting flip dive to the floor onto both guys at 7:30! Jack shoved MV into the ring steps, and those two traded chops. Frazer hit a flying elbow on MV. Frazer hit a Spanish Fly off the ring steps to the floor on Cartwheel! In the ring, Frazer and MV traded superkicks, and they were both down at 9:30. Frazer hit a double Lionsault, so both he and MV crashed stomach-first to the mat, and Nathan got a nearfall. Jack did a leg sweep and his slingshot elbow drop on Nathan, then his Crucifix Driver on Frazer for a believable nearfall at 11:00.
Jack hit his slingshot dropkick in the corner on Mini Vikingo for a nearfall. Jack hit a powerbomb on Frazer, but MV hit a second-rope Crucifix Driver on Jack, and they were all down at 12:30! “What do these three guys have left?” Graves wondered. MV hit running Meteoras in opposite corners. Jack hit a Pele Kick that sent Frazer to the floor. Jack hit a top-rope moonsault to the floor on MV. Frazer hit a shotgun dropkick on Jack at 14:00!
Frazer hit a flip dive to the floor onto both guys, then a frog splash in the ring on Jack for a nearfall. Jack hit a German Suplex with a high bridge on Frazer for a nearfall. Jack hit a cartwheel. Jack and MV hit stereo spin kicks to the head; Jack fell onto Frazer and got a nearfall at 15:30! They all got up and traded forearm strikes. Jack knocked MV to the floor, then he superkicked Frazer to the floor, too. Jack hit the Sasuke Special dive onto both of them at 17:30!
In the ring, Frazer hit a superplex on Jack, then a twisting neckbreaker for a nearfall! Mini Vikingo hit a top-rope Spanish Fly on Frazer. Jack got a rollup for a nearfall on Nathan. Mini Vikingo hit a Shooting Star Press onto Frazer, but Jack kicked MV in the head on the way down! Jack hit a Phoenix Splash onto MV for a believable nearfall, but Frazer made the save! Frazer missed his own Phoenix Splash. MV hit a Phoenix Splash on Nathan. Jack hit a Phoenix Splash! The bell rang at 20:20. This has been ruled a time-limit draw! Well, who is No. 1 contender???
Jack Cartwheel vs. Nathan Frazer vs. Mini Vikingo went to a time-limit draw at 20:20.
* AAA Cruiserweight Champion Rey Fenix came out of the back, with his title belt over his shoulder, and said he has great respect for all three of them. (Rey Mysterio translated). Fenix said he will face all three of them at Triplemania at Night 2!
* After a lengthy commercial break, a new title belt was shown. It will go to the winner of the next match!
6. El Fiscal vs. El Hijo De Dr. Wagner Jr. vs. Damian Priest vs. La Parka in a four-way for the vacant AAA Latin American Title. The three masked guys attacked Priest. Wagner rolled up La Parka for a nearfall. La Parka hit a backbreaker over his knee. Priest slammed La Parka chest-first to the mat. Priest hit a springboard crossbody block, then he hit spin kicks on each opponent at 2:00. He hit a Falcon Arrow on La Parka for a nearfall. Graves wondered what it would mean in the locker room if an outsider like Priest came in and won the belt.
Priest hit a Flatliner for a nearfall on La Parka. Wagner unloaded some chops on Priest. He came off the ropes, but Wagner kicked him and hit a brainbuster at 3:30. Wagner hit a somersault off the apron to the floor on the other two. He hit a frog splash in the ring on Priest for a nearfall. Fiscal jumped in and clotheslined Wagner. Fiscal hit some quick kicks on Priest, then a top-rope twisting crossbody block for a nearfall at 5:00. La Parka suplexed Fiscal into the turnbuckles, then he hit a corner moonsault to the floor on Fiscal.
In the ring, La Parka hit a Lungblower to the chest on Wagner, then a Blue Thunder Bomb, and they were both down. Priest hit a hard clothesline on Wagner, and suddenly everyone was down at 6:30. Fiscal hit a series of kicks on Priest, but it only fired up Damian. La Parka hit a top-rope Spanish Fly on Wagner for a nearfall at 8:00. Fiscal leapt off the ropes, but Priest caught him with a punch. Priest hit a Razor’s Edge on Fiscal, then a Razor’s Edge on Wagner. He hit a South of Heaven chokeslam on Fiscal for a nearfall, but La Parka made the save. La Parka hit his twisting suplex on Fiscal for the pin! A really good match.
La Parka defeated El Fiscal, El Hijo De Dr. Wagner Jr., and Damian Priest in a four-way to win the vacant AAA Latin American Title at 9:21.
* Rey Mysterio came to the ring, wearing a suit jacket. It’s time for a contract signing! Andrea Bazarte joined the booth to translate. Rey talked about some of the great wrestling that has occurred at Triplemania in past years. Music cut him off mid-sentence. Dominik Mysterio and Dorian Roldan emerged from the back and walked to the ring. Dominik complained, but Rey informed him that he would defend his belt against El Grande Americano, who finally came from the back. GA told Dominik that he’s repeatedly described himself as “The king of the luchadors.” Well, at Triplemania, Dominik will have a chance to prove it! Grande American signed the contract.
Omos came out of the crowd, wearing a suit. Rey got in his face and told him he couldn’t be here because he’s suspended. Omos opened his jacket and pulled out a paper ticket, and he sat down in the front row. Rey struck him! Dominik grabbed a chair, and he struck Grande Americano with it. Rey lifted the suspension on Omos, so Rey can fight him at Triplemania in Las Vegas. If Omos wins, he stays on the roster, but if Omos loses, he’s gone from AAA forever!
7. Dragon Lee and Rey Fenix and Penta vs. “Los Perros Del Mal” Daga and Berto and Angel Garza (w/Karmen Petrovic). Daga and Lee opened and traded quick reversals. Berto entered; his hair is a peppered mix of brown and black today, and it’s noticeably different. He battled Fenix. Rey Mysterio returned to the booth; JBL accused him of “attacking a paying fan.” Mysterio insisted Omos touched him first. Daga threw Fenix into the corner, then hit a snap suplex for a nearfall at 2:00. Fenix was tossed to the floor, where Karmen hit a spin kick on him.
Angel hit a running penalty kick on Fenix for a nearfall. Berto mockingly did Penta’s strut before striking Fenix again. Daga pulled the babyfaces off the apron at 4:30 so Fenix couldn’t tag out. Fenix hit a huracanrana. Penta got a hot tag, and he hit a series of clotheslines. Lee hit a slingshot dropkick in the corner on Angel at 6:00. Daga hit an Eye of the Hurricane on Dragon Lee. Penta got back in to battle Daga. They hit stereo kicks to the head and were both down at 8:00. Fenix and Berto jumped back in. Angel and Lee traded blows, and Garza hit a superkick, then a pop-up knee strike.
Lee tied Garza in the Tree of Woe and hit a top-rope double stomp to his chest. Berto hit a missile dropkick on Penta at 10:00. Berto nailed a sit-out powerbomb for a nearfall on Fenix. Fenix hit a huracanrana for a nearfall. Fenix and Lee hit stereo flip dives to the floor. In the ring, Berto went for a moonsault on Fenix, but Fenix got his feet up to block it. Fenix hit the Mexican Muscle Buster on Berto for the pin! A fine match, but not nearly as good as other matches on the show.
Dragon Lee and Rey Fenix and Penta defeated “Los Perros Del Mal” Daga and Berto and Angel Garza at 11:50.
* The babyfaces started to celebrate, but the Perros jumped back into the ring and attacked them as the show faded to black.
Final Thoughts: That three-way lucha match was absolutely bonkers action. So many believable nearfalls. I presumed Mini Vikingo was winning, but there were many moments I thought each of them had won. An absolutely tremendous lucha match, and everything they tried, it hit and looked good. It’s a go-out-of-your-way-and-make-a-
Priest’s four-way was really good. They had a tough act to follow, but they packed a lot of action into just over nine minutes. I figured Fiscal was eating the pin, but I wouldn’t have been surprised if any of the other three had scored the win and the belt. A good main event, but there were no stakes — nothing was on the line. I love the new hairstyle for Berto; it transforms his whole look.
The contract signing went on a bit too long and sapped some of the energy from the room. The gauntlet was fine; La Catalina was clearly going to be the winner. A show well worth checking out, especially for that four-way.
