EVE – Riot Grrrls of Wrestling (Episode 1)

* This venue is a large gymnasium or fieldhouse. The lighting is decent. The crowd was maybe 250. Two women provided commentary. The three matches here took place at two separate EVE events. (You truly cannot tell they occurred on different days.)
* There is a green clock in the corner of the screen, counting down from 20 minutes… but for some reason, we joined the first match as it was at 19:00 (counting down toward zero). It’s unclear why they scrapped airing that first minute!
1. Emersyn Jayne vs. Skye Blue. Again, this match was already underway. They brawled to the floor. Jayne hit a Death Valley Driver onto the ring steps at 1:30! Ouch! They got back into the ring. Jayne threw a chair at Skye; it was a pretty soft throw but still unnecessary. Skye ducked under the ring; when she emerged at 4:30, she was bleeding from her forehead. They got back into the ring, where Jayne hit a chairshot to the back. She gouged her fingers into Skye’s forehead and was booed.
Jayne missed a spear in the corner. Skye now cracked a chair over Jayne’s back. The female ref had to put gloves on. Skye got a bundle of cooking skewers at 7:00. She jabbed the skewers into Jayne’s thighs, earning a “You sick f—-!” chant. Jayne jabbed the skewers into the top of Skye’s head and hit a German Suplex, then a crossbody block in the corner and a missile dropkick for a nearfall at 9:00. Jayne slammed Skye back-first across a chair that was open and on its side, and she got a nearfall. OUCH!
They sat down on chairs across from each other and traded punches. They stood up and traded forearm strikes. Jayne hit a spinning back fist. She hit a German Suplex at 11:30. Skye went for a tornado DDT but Jayne blocked it. Jayne hit a running knee, and they were both down. Jayne put Skye in a piledriver position along her back, leapt off the ring apron, and they crashed through an open table on the floor at 13:00! Jayne pushed her into the ring but only got a nearfall.
Skye trapped Jayne’s head in the corner and kicked her in the face, then she powerbombed Jayne onto the sideways chair, but she only got a nearfall. They got up and traded forearm strikes. We heard a man’s voice, who waved off the 20:00 time limit. Skye got a belt. She rolled to the floor and whipped some of the male security guards! The guards listened to her and pushed a table into the ring and set it up for her. Humorous. They fought on the ropes in the corner, and Skye hit a sunset bomb onto the table, but it didn’t break! Skye hit her Code Red for the pin!
Skye Blue defeated Emersyn Jayne at 17:15/official time of 18:15.
* Skye got on the mic and said she’s “shown she has the spirit of Eve.” She vowed to see them on Wembley weekend.
2. “Lallie” Lana Austin and Hollie Barlow vs. “French Art” Cory Zero and JGU for the EVE Tag Titles. This match took place June 5. I’ve seen all four competitors before, but certainly more of Lana from Progress Wrestling shows. Hollie opened against Cory, who has long, straight black hair. They traded rollups. Lana entered at 3:30 to fight JGU, who I’ve compared to U.S. indy star Jordan Blade — they both present themselves as tough, legit fighters. The champs began working over JGU in their corner. Zero got back in, and she twisted Lana’s fingers at 6:30, earning a “You sick f—!” chant. JGU got back in and hit a back suplex on Lana for a nearfall.
French Art took turns stomping on Lana in their corner. They brawled on the floor at 9:30. Back in the ring, French Art continued to work over Lana. Cory grapevined a leg on the mat. Lana hit a stunner on JGU at 13:00, and they were both down. Hollie finally got a hot tag and hit some back suplexes. She hit a clothesline on JGU and was fired up. Hollie dove through the ropes onto the challengers at 14:30. In the ring, she hit an Air Raid Crash on Zero for a nearfall. Zero hit a Bicycle Kick in the corner on Barlow, then a Dragon Suplex.
JGU hit a Facewash Kick on Hollie, and French Art were back in charge. All four started brawling. Lana hit a stunner at 17:00. Lana hit a Poison Rana on Zero, and that popped the crowd. Barlow hit a Canadian Destroyer for a nearfall. Zero and Lana tagged in; they charged at each other and traded punches. Lana locked in a half-crab, but Zero reached the ropes at 19:30. Zero hit a Styles Bomb on Lana for a nearfall. Lana nailed a discus clothesline on Cory, and Hollie got a believable nearfall at 21:00. Zero hit a neckbreaker out of the corner on Lana.
Zero got on the top rope, but Lana pushed her to the floor! JGU hit a spinebuster on Hollie, mounted her, and repeated punched Barlow. Lana and JGU traded some stiff forearm strikes at 22:30. JGU removed a corner pad. She was going to ram Lana’s head into it, but the ref stopped her. The ref got bumped! Lana hit a back suplex on JGU. JGU struck Lana in the head with a title belt. Zero grabbed the belt and struck Hollie with it for a believable nearfall! JGU immediately hit a spear on Hollie, then a powerbomb. Cory nailed a springboard moonsault onto Hollie for the pin! New champions! JGU and Zero hugged and celebrated!
“French Art” Cory Zero and JGU defeated “Lallie” Lana Austin and Hollie Barlow to win the EVE Tag Titles at 24:54.
* An ad aired for the next show on August 28.
3. Kris Statlander vs. Miyu Yamashita for the EVE International Title. This is also from the June 5 event. We got the bell, then they shook hands and locked up. Kris has the height and overall size advantage. They tied up on the mat, and Kris kept her grounded in a headlock. Miyu nailed a stiff kick to the spine at 2:30, then another. Kris hit a running boot in the corner. She hit an impressive delayed suplex. Miyu hit a running penalty kick on the apron. Kris slammed Miyu and got a nearfall back in the ring at 5:30. Kris went for a crossface, but Miyu bit Kris’ hand! Kris hit a bodyslam for a nearfall.
Kris did a slingshot to send Miyu face-first into the corner, then she hit a Vader Bomb for a nearfall at 7:00. They got up and traded strikes. Miyu hit a running knee to the back of the head and got a nearfall. Miyu applied a standing Cobra Clutch and tied her in an Anaconda Vice on the mat. Kris hit a backbreaker over her knee. She hit a pump kick and hit an inverted bodyslam, dropping Miyu on her stomach. Miyu hit a Disaster Kick at 10:30 and they were both down.
Kris nailed an Eat D’Feat and a clothesline, then a Michinoku Driver for a believable nearfall at 12:30. Kris nailed a top-rope 450 Splash for a believable nearfall. Miyu nailed a running knee to the back of the head, then a release German Suplex. Kris hit a Chaos Theory, but Miyu nailed another kick, and they were both down at 15:00. They got up and traded forearm strikes, then some overhand chops. Kris nailed a clothesline and a stiff package piledriver for a believable nearfall at 16:30! Kris went for a Tombstone Piledriver, but Miyu got a rollup. Miyu nailed the roundhouse Skull Kick and scored the pin! New champion!
Miyu Yamashita defeated Kris Statlander to win the EVE International Title at 17:30.
* As Statlander was headed to the back, Kay Lee Ray came to the ring! They glared at each other as they walked past each other. Kay Lee Ray got in the ring and congratulated Miyu. She wants next! More music played, and Rhio hit the ring! (Again, not AEW’s Riho!) Rhio glared at Kay Lee Ray. Rhio said Kay Lee can’t just stroll in and demand a title shot. Rhio shouted an expletive and told Kay Lee Ray to get to the back of the line! Rhio got on the mic and told those two to fight each other to earn a title shot. Rhio and Kay Lee Ray traded blows. Miyu hit a kick on Rhio to send her to the floor.
Final Thoughts: What a fun show. I hope we get a few more episodes like this. Sure, it would be great if they released a full nine- or 10-match show, but I’ll gladly take a three-match episode, especially when the match quality is this good. I can do without that thrown chair, but it was tossed somewhat softly, and at least it was used to set up Skye blading and bleeding.
This episode is 78 minutes long. If you haven’t visited MyAEW.com, you really should… some promotions have full shows, others have just a match or two from top stars. And it all airs without commercials, which is preferable to many promotions that run on YouTube.
