By Jason Powell, Prowrestling.net Editor (@prowrestlingnet)

The following first-round matches are advertised for the New Japan Pro Wrestling “New Japan Cup” tournament.

-Michael Elgin vs. Tomohiro Ishii (March 9 in Tokyo at Korakuen Hall)

-Juice Robinson vs. Yujiro Takahashi (March 9 in Tokyo at Korakuen Hall)

-Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Taichi (March 10 in Aichi at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium)

-Bad Luck Fale vs. Lance Archer (March 10 in Aichi at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium)

-Yoshi-Hashi vs. Kota Ibushi (March 11 in Hyogo at Baycom Gymnasium)

-Tetsuy Naito vs. Zack Sabre Jr. (March 11 in Hyogo at Baycom Gymnasium)

-Toru Yano vs. Davey Boy Smith Jr. (March 12 in Kagawa at Takamatsu City General Gymnasium)

-Chuckie T vs. Sanada (March 12 in Kagawa at Takamatsu City General Gymnasium)

Powell’s POV: The winner of the Elgin vs. Ishii match will face the winner of Robinson and Takahashi and so on down the list. The first four matches represent the top half of the bracket while the second four matches are the bottom half of the bracket. The second round matches will be held on March 14-15, the semifinals and tournament final will take place on March 21. The first round matches that stand out to me are Naito vs. Sabre and Elgin vs. Ishii. I’m surprised to see Tanahashi returning so soon given all of his injuries.
