luchaundergroundJohnny Mundo was interviewed by Brian Fritz of Sporting News and was asked about the importance of Lucha Underground securing a television deal in Mexico. “Extremely important,” Mundo said. “It’s frustrating sometimes as a performer to feel like we’re doing this awesome product that’s not on TV in Mexico and half the roster lives in Mexico City. I also think that as important as a deal is in Mexico, the right deal is the most important. I think that’s why it’s taking a little time. Finding a partner for Lucha Underground that’s the right partner is probably the most important thing.

“As long as we’re going there, I’d say we just cut deals — we’re starting to air in Asia in Singapore, Malaysia and some other territories. We’re on in Canada, Spain, Morocco and getting these TV deals in all these foreign territories is a process. The people who are in charge of it are working very hard at it. It is starting to pick up and the long-term sustainability of Lucha Underground is going to depend on getting this product out to a global market. It’s what’s happening. You always want it to happen faster.”

Mundo also spoke about Lucha Underground being a unique product that not everyone grasps. “There’s always resistance,” he said with a laughs. “Jim Cornette did an interview about how he’ll never understand what Lucha Underground is. There’s traditionalists and longtime people that are mostly in the business that have the most resistance towards Lucha Underground. The way that I convince or explain to anyone what Lucha Underground is is to just say you need to watch it. It’s self-explanatory. If you’ve never been to a live wrestling show, you need to go to one. To understand Lucha Underground, you need to watch it.” Read the full interview at SportingNews.com.

Powell’s POV: I am surprised that LU hasn’t secured a strong deal in Mexico, and perhaps more surprised that Netflix hasn’t gotten onboard. The LU product seems perfect for Netflix with its episodic nature and because it’s essentially timeless in that they are not promoting events that would make the show seem dated. Mundo also spoke about whether he’s a fan in the gaps between LU tapings and his latest non-wrestling project.
