NWA Powerrr (Episode 278)

I rarely watch NWA, but I’m pleased that they have signed several young talents recently. Joe Galli, Danny Dealz, and Billy Corgan provided commentary. This looks like any other taping recently at what we all know as ECW Arena.
* The show opened with Billy Corgan in the ring (of course!), and footage that set up the main event of this show.
* Nattie Neidhart spoke backstage. She wore her black one-piece that just screams “I’m here to kick butt; Take me seriously.” She headed to the ring.
1. Kenzie Paige vs. Kylie Alexa vs. Nattie Neidhart in a three-way. The commentators immediately talked about how the sisters “are on the same page, no pun intended.” A nice pop for Nattie, who came out with five guys as her entourage. The sisters cowered in a corner, and the crowd loudly chanted for Nattie. Because it’s a three-way, the sisters were both in the ring and attacked Nattie. Nattie threw Kenzie to the floor, and she hit some blows on Alexa. Kenzie tripped Nattie and pulled her to the floor. Kenzie joined them, and they brawled at ringside. In the ring, Nattie set up for a Sharpshooter at 2:00, but Kenzie escaped and applied a crossface. Nattie tied her in a surfboard, but Kylie hit a leg drop on Nattie to break it up. [C]
* The commercial break included a promo from Silas Mason, talking about his main event match against Carson Drake. (I stop the stopwatch during commercial breaks on taped shows.) We also saw an ad for the taping that took place last Sunday in Milwaukee.
Back to the mat, Kylie got a nearfall and worked over Nattie. No sign of Kenzie. Kylie applied a Boston Crab in the ropes at 4:30; because it’s a Triple Threat, there are no DQs. Kenzie got into the ring, and they took turns hitting blows to Nattie’s back and kept her grounded. The sisters both went for the pin. They stood up and jawed at each other; who would get the win? The sisters then showed they were fooling the crowd and weren’t really upset. Nattie hit a German Suplex on Kenzie, then on Kylie. She hit a discus clothesline on Kenzie, then one on Kylie at 6:30.
Nattie tried a double Sharpshooter. The sisters escaped, and each applied a half-crab, but Nattie powered her way free. She again tried a Sharpshooter, but Kenzie pushed free. Kenzie hit a stunner for a nearfall at 8:30. [C]
* (A second commercial break? It was only about six minutes of action between breaks!) Carson Drake and Aron Stevens (f/k/a Damian Sandow) spoke backstage. Stevens gave Drake a Rolex as a gift for winning the title tonight. (That’s confidence!)
Back to the ring, Kenzie accidentally hit a stunner on Kylie! She turned around and was alone against Nattie! They hit stereo clotheslines and were both down at 10:00. Kylie grabbed a belt, but she struck her sister with it, and it sure didn’t look like an accident! However, Nattie shoved Kylie to the floor, and Nattie applied a Sharpshooter! Kenzie frantically tapped out!
Nattie Neidhart defeated Kenzie Paige and Kylie Alexa in a three-way at 10:43.
* Backstage, Silas Mason did a sit-down interview and talked about defending the NWA Title all over the world. I’ll reiterate that Mason has slimmed down and upgraded his physique since the first time I saw him in NWA. Granted, I’ve only seen maybe two matches from him in the past year, but he seems to be doing a decent job as the flagship of the NWA brand.
2. Silas Mason vs. Carson Drake (w/Aron Stevens) for the NWA Title. Drake is the smarmy sweater-vest-wearing elite. We got the bell, and they stood nose-to-nose and jawed at each other before Carson shoved him. Silas is taller and clearly has the weight and muscle mass advantage. An intense lockup as they bounced against the ropes. We went to a commercial at 1:00. [C]
They were on opposite sides of the ring as we returned, and we had another clean lockup, and Silas applied a headlock on the mat. They got to their feet, and Silas applied another headlock. He finally hit a clothesline at 4:00, then a big back-body drop, and a series of punches in the corner. Carson was wobbly and swung wildly; Silas hit a back suplex for a one-count at 5:30. Aron Stevens reached in and grabbed Mason’s ankle. [C]
* This commercial break included a segment with The Slimeballz and Trevor Murdoch. Murdoch wore a crown and robe, reminding me of late-stage “King” Harley Race. The less said about this segment, the better. It will NOT get you interested in watching this promotion.
Back to the action, Carson threw Silas into the guardrail, and Mason was down on the floor. Carson hit a neckbreaker, and they were both down at 7:00. Carson was injured from the move, and referees checked on him. Billy Corgan left commentary to check on him, too. It was announced that Carson “cannot continue” at 8:40. Mason got in the ring and announced that “It ain’t over between us.” Stevens jumped in the ring and attacked Mason! However, Mason hit the “Thrill Ride” (Black Hole Slam) on Aron. Huh, I guess the injury is legit.
Silas Mason defeated Carson Drake via ref stoppage due to injury at 8:40.
Final Thoughts: This year marks 40 full years that I (age 53!) have been a wrestling fan, and I guess I’m just conditioned to think an injury is a work. I still had the stopwatch running as Aron Stevens hopped in the ring, fully expecting Drake to run into the ring and attack Silas. Granted, I could see Drake talking while lying on the ground, so I did get a sense that he was communicating that he had suffered an injury. An unfortunate ending to what was the main event of what was clearly a long taping.
I tuned in for the women’s match, and I was pleased with what I saw. Both sisters are pretty talented, and Nattie is always fun to watch when she’s in her “I’m here to kick ass and take names” mode. Well worth watching the first half of this hour. This episode clocks in at 44 minutes.
