GCW “Rock Bottom”

Harpos is actually my least favorite venue on the GCW tour. This is a night club, and it’s been the host venue for far too many gross deathmatches. (GCW loves their deathmatches, and they always load the card with them in venues that allow them.) I know there are at least two announced matches I intend to skip entirely. Its also far too dark in there; the center of the ring is lit okay, but even the corners are in the shadows. John Moseley provided commentary.
* I’ll point out here that GCW regulars Joey Janela and 1 Called Manders were competing at wXw in Germany, along with Myron Reed, Killer Kelly, Steph De Lander, Judas Icarus, and Travis Williams.
1. “Top Team” Jay Lucas and Terry Yaki vs. “Bustah & The Brain” Alec Price and Jordan Oliver vs. Davey Bang and August Matthews vs. “The Outbreak” Abel Booker and Jacksyn Crowley (w/Barnabus The Bizarre) in a four-way tag. This was the match I cared about the most. Top Team are from Action Wrestling in Georgia and they recently wrestled in ROH. The Outbreak are zombies and you can’t tell them apart. Oliver and Lucas opened, with the other six on the apron. Jordan hit his twisting crossbody block. Yaki battled Price, with Alec hitting a tornado DDT. Bang entered at 2:30, and he hit a dropkick on Yaki.
Bang launched off of Matthews and hit an axe kick. Emil Jay finally joined commentary. The Outbreak guys got in, and one of them hit a flip dive to the floor at 4:00! In the ring, Top Team battled both zombies. Jordan hit a top-rope flying elbow drop. Price got a hot tag and he hit a dive to the floor. In the ring, Price ran the ropes to pick up speed and hit a crossbody block on Bang at 6:00. Price hit a frog splash for a nearfall. Yaki hit an enzuigiri on Price. Oliver hit a DVD on Yaki.
Matthews hit a Cave-In stomp to the chest. Oliver hit a mid-ring Spanish Fly. Bang hit a Mid-ring Spanish Fly on Price, then a superkick! Price hit a Rebound Lariat, and they were both down at 8:30. The zombies tagged in, but Yaki hit a double huracanrana on them. Yaki hit a flip dive to the floor onto the zombies. In the ring, Bang and Matthews hit stereo German Suplexes. Bang hit the Spears Tower. Matthews hit a dive to the floor. Price hit his springboard Blockbuster at 11:00. Bustah & The Brain hit the Team Styles Clash on Bang for the pin! Fun match.
“Bustah & The Brain” Alec Price and Jordan Oliver defeated “Top Team” Jay Lucas and Terry Yaki, Davey Bang and August Matthews, and “The Outbreak” Abel Booker and Jacksyn Crowley in a four-way tag at 11:16.
* Jordan Oliver got on the mic and proclaimed that Harpos is his favorite spot on the GCW tour. He talked about their match on Saturday against the champs. KJ Orso and Sam Stackhouse came out and confronted them. KJ offered to beat them up right now. He changed his mind because they have a title defense … right now!
2. KJ Orso and Sam Stackhouse vs. “The Pillars” Malcolm Monroe III and Tommy Vendetta for the GCW Tag Team Titles. I’ve noted that Vendetta looks like a Briscoe brother. The champs attacked them as soon as they slid into the ring! All four brawled. Stackhouse again wore his Big Boss Man-inspired gear, with the light blue police officer shirt. The Pillars dove through the ropes onto the champs at 1:00. MM3 hit a flip dive through the ropes. In the ring, the champs took control and worked over Vendetta in their corner.
Stackhouse hit some headbutts at 4:30. Tommy hit some forearm strikes. MM3 got in and hit a senton on Orso. He hit a shoulder-breaker over his knee for a nearfall. MM3 hit a butterfly powerbomb for a nearfall. Stackhouse hit his spinning heel kick for a nearfall, but MM3 hit a Swanton Bomb to break up the pin. The Pillars hit stereo superkicks on Sam at 8:00. KJ hit a jumping knee to the chin. MM3 hit a rolling kip-up stunner. Vendetta went for a pin, but Sam shoved the ref to stop the count! Sam hit a piledriver on MM3 while KJ hit the Character Assassination double stomp to the back of Vendetta’s head for the pin. Solid match.
KJ Orso and Sam Stackhouse defeated “The Pillars” Malcolm Monroe III and Tommy Vendetta to retain the GCW Tag Team Titles at 9:29.
3. Marko Stunt vs. Flyin’ Ryan O’Neill. Marko came out first and dove onto Ryan as he approached the ring, and we’re underway! They looped ringside and brawled. At 2:30, they climbed onto the music stage, and Ryan threw him onto a bar. Marko hit a huracanrana off the bar, and they returned to ringside. Marko hit a flip dive off a beam (maybe eight feet off the ground) onto O’Neill on the floor at 4:00. They got into the ring for the first time. (Ref Scarlett Donovan is in the ring; I don’t know if we ever had a bell, but she just made a two-count.)
They traded punches. Marko hit a basement dropkick at 8:00. He hit a Canadian Destroyer, and they were both down. Stunt hit a second-rope flying elbow drop to the back, but he couldn’t hit the Sliced Bread out of the corner. Stunt hit a Spike Dudley-style bulldog out of the corner at 10:30. Stunt hit a top-rope crossbody block, but Ryan caught him and hit a Death Valley Driver for a nearfall.
Marko got Ryan across his shoulders, but O’Neill escaped. Ryan hit a Cleopatra stunner and a Northern Lights suplex for a nearfall at 12:30, then a swinging faceplant for a nearfall. Ryan went under the ring and got a chair. However, Stunt hit a tornado DDT onto the open chair at 14:30. Stunt again got Ryan across his shoulders and hit a DVD onto the open chair for the pin! Marko offered a handshake, but Ryan stormed off to the back and was booed.
Marko Stunt defeated Ryan O’Neill at 14:58.
4. Shane Mercer vs. Dr. Redacted in a deathmatch. I decided this would be my own deathmatch of the night. Mercer pushed a grocery cart filled with weapons to the ring. Mercer is a powerhouse, and his Moonsault & Battery from the corner is a thing of beauty. Redacted snuck in from behind and whipped a chair (I hate that!) at Shane, and we’re underway! Shane hit a chairshot and a release suplex for a nearfall. Mercer pushed a weapon into Redacted’s forehead to bust him open, and he whipped Redacted across the back with a metal chain at 2:00!
Mercer brought the grocery cart into the ring and threw it at Redacted! They went to the floor, and Shane whipped him into chairs and the wall. Redacted cracked a garbage can lid over his head, then hit a rolling cannonball onto a seated Mercer at 5:00. He threw some chairs at Shane. They brawled on the floor for a few minutes. Redacted got into the ring at 7:00 and set up a door bridge. Back on the floor, Shane choked him. It’s just so hard to see in this venue (it’s one of the reasons this is the worst venue GCW routinely visits.
They got onto the stage and Mercer tried a Gorilla Press toss into the ring. However, Mercer landed on the top rope and bounced into the ring and onto the door bridge! (That could have gone so much worse than it did.) Mercer got in the ring and set up the door bridge. However, Redacted hit a DVD through the door bridge for a nearfall at 10:30. Moseley said Redacted “Shouldn’t even be standing!” Redacted hit a rolling cannonball into the corner for a nearfall.
Mercer got a bundle of light tubes that were plugged in and turned on! Shane gouged Redacted in the forehead with wood shrapnel. Mercer hit the second-rope Moonsault & Battery on the lit light tubes, but Redacted rolled through the move and scored the pin! A pretty wild deathmatch, but we just do NOT need those chairshots to unprotected heads.
Dr. Redacted defeated Shane Mercer in a deathmatch at 12:28.
5. “Team GCW” Jeffrey John, Kristian Robinson, Brayden Toon, Logan Cavazos, Juni Underwood, and Hunter Drake vs. “Team JCW” Caleb Konley, Facade, JP Grayson, Tommy Grayson, Sally Boy, and Tarzan Duran in a 12-man tag. I don’t know Sally Boy (who doesn’t have a Cagematch.net bio yet), but everyone else has appeared in GCW at one point or another, often representing the Juggalos. Juni and Caleb opened, and I’ll reiterate that he looks nothing like his “Kaleb with a K” days in TNA.
The tall, scrawny kid Cavazos (who has done several GCW shows in the past year) traded offense with Duran. Brayden entered at 2:30. It’s been a while since Toon has been on a GCW show; I just noted that while watching him compete at an outdoor show from Montreal. He hit a running Shooting Star Press for a nearfall. (He’s a big guy to be pulling off that move!) Robinson battled Sally Boy. Kristian wrestles barefoot, and he hit a spin kick. Ring vet Facade entered at 4:00 and battled Robinson. Kristian hit a senton. Jeffrey John entered and hit a back-body drop on Facade.
The Grayson brothers — wearing identical silver, sparkly shirts — hit some quick team moves on Jeffrey John. Suddenly, all 12 were brawling at 5:30. Juni got in and hit some offense on both Graysons. Juni hit a corner plancha to the floor on Caleb. Hunter and Kristian hit stereo flip dives to the floor at 7:30. Sally Boy dove over the ropes onto everyone. Toon hit an Asai Moonsault onto everyone. Tarzan hit a twisting dive onto everyone. Facade hit a Sabu-style dive, launching off a chair and onto the top rope, before flipping to the floor.
Logan hit a springboard moonsault to the floor. Robinson hit a German Suplex. The Graysons hit stereo kicks on Robinson. Jeffrey John hit a twisting moonsault off the stage onto several guys below. Hunter hit a sunset flip out of the corner on the Graysons. Facade hit a springboard flying kick. Robinson hit a springboard flying body block. However, Kaleb grabbed Robinson, hit a Burning Hammer, and scored the pin! That was pretty entertaining, and a lot of guys got to show off their flips and dives.
“Team JCW” Caleb Konley, Facade, JP Grayson, Tommy Grayson, Sally Boy, and Tarzan Duran defeated “Team GCW” Jeffrey John, Kristian Robinson, Brayden Toon, Logan Cavazos, Juni Underwood, and Hunter Drake at 11:05.
6. Willie Mack vs. Richard Holliday. We got the bell, but Holliday stalled on the floor and jawed at the crowd. In the ring, they tied up, and Mack twisted the left arm. They traded a chop; Mack removed his shirt and invited Holliday to hit some more! Holliday hit some, pretended like he was going to let Mack hit some, but instead he poked Willie in the eyes at 4:00. Mack did a handstand in the corner, then he hit a flying kick. He backed Holliday into a corner and hit some chops. Holliday hit some stomps and chops and took control.
Holliday put Mack across his shoulders and hit a stunner for a nearfall at 8:00, and he jawed at the ref. Mack hit a spinning heel kick and a bodyslam. Mack hit a rolling cannonball for a nearfall at 9:30. Holliday shoved Mack face-first into the middle turnbuckle. Richard removed his boot, swung it, and missed. Mack hit a uranage for a nearfall at 11:00. Mack hit a pop-up forearm strike and a stunner, and they were both down. Mack pulled off the second boot. Holliday hit his Signature Move (the low-blow uppercut) and the 2008 swinging suplex for the tainted pin.
Richard Holliday defeated Willie Mack at 12:31.
7. Vipress vs. “Hollyhood” Haley J for the GCW Ultraviolent Title. Haley was hilariously covered in bubble wrap as she walked to the ring, carrying her puppy. “Haley, what the hell are you doing? You look like a f—ing clown,” Vipress said. Haley got on the mic and said she does NOT do deathmatches! Vipress told her, “The people want violence!” Vipress turned this into a title match — but Haley frantically waved her arms, saying she does not want a title shot! Funny. Haley attacked her, but they almost immediately fought to the floor, as Haley did her best to run away.
They got back into the ring, and Vipress ripped at the bubble wrap and beat her up. Haley got a light tube, but set it down and gave the crowd the middle finger. They again fought on the floor, where Haley J struck her with a chair. Haley accidentally chopped the ring post at 3:30. She whipped Vipress into rows of chairs. In the ring, Vipress hit a back suplex at 6:00, then a dive through the ropes onto Haley J. In the ring, Haley whipped Vipress through a pane of glass in the corner for a nearfall at 8:00, but Vipress hit a DVD. Vipress got a bundle of light tubes, cracked them over Haley’s head, hit a piledriver, and scored the pin. Fun match.
Vipress defeated Haley J to retain the GCW Ultraviolent Title at 8:41.
8. “VNDL 48” Atticus Cogar and Christian Naper vs. Nick Gage and Slade. Slade pretended like he was going to team with VNDL 48, but then he attacked them, and we’re underway! The babyfaces flipped VNDL 48 through glass panes. Atticus planted cooking skewers into the top of Slade’s head, rolled him up with a handful of tights, and scored the tainted pin. Lame match and shockingly short.
VNDL 48″ Atticus Cogar and Christian Naper defeated Nick Gage and Slade at 7:14.
9. Otis Cogar vs. Dale Patricks in a deathmatch. Chairs, light tubes, etc., were set up at ringside. VNDL 48 got in the ring and helped beat up Patricks. The ring was absolutely covered in light tube debris. Slade and Gage came out and chased off VNDL 48. Patricks hit a senton move with a light tube along his back and scored the pin. I can’t stress the amount of glass debris in the ring enough, and how bloody both guys were. Just not for me.
Dale Patricks defeated Otis Cogar at 13:47 in a deathmatch.
Final Thoughts: An okay show. The four-way tag match that opened the show was easily best match. While I love Bustah & The Brain, this would have been a good time to give a big win to Top Team, or even Bang & Matthews. I’ll go Stunt-O’Neill for second, ahead of the 12-man tag for third. Mack-Holliday and Vipress-Haley both worked for me. I admittedly didn’t watch the final two matches, so I won’t comment further on them.
I don’t doubt this is a cool venue for a concert. But for wrestling, it just sucks. No ring is lit worse than this in any city GCW visits; if you can think of one, let me know. It’s not an aesthetically pleasing show to watch. And of course, it’s even worse when wrestlers leave the ring and brawl into the crowd. Throw in the fact that GCW loves to load up with death matches in Detroit, and it makes me cringe whenever I read that they are headed back to Harpos.
