[Hour One] Impact opened with a highlight package that recapped last week’s show… The Impact opening aired… Tom Hannifan and Matt Rehwoldt were on commentary, and McKenzie Mitchell was the ring announcer…
Elayna Black made her entrance. The Concierge came out and heeled on the crowd while introducing Heather by Elegance…
1. Elayna Black vs. Heather by Elegance (w/The Concierge, Mr. Elegance). Black caught Heather with a couple of knee strikes and a suplex before covering her for a two count. Black came back with an overhead kick. Heather leaned in a corner while using her legs to put Black down. Heather went up top and had to roll through when Black moved. Black kicked Heather and then put her away with her Blackout DDT finisher…
Elayna Black beat Heather by Elegance in roughly 6:00.
Powell’s POV: A solid opening match. The lack of an actual babyface turn hurt Black initially, but she’s doing good work as a babyface and has won over a lot of fans.
Gia Miller interviewed Ryan Nemeth in a backstage area. Ryan recalled being laid out backstage. He credited his “big brother” Nic Nemeth for being a great detective and figuring out that Matt Hardy was behind the attack. Miller noted that Matt denied it. Ryan pointed out the No DQ stipulation for Nic vs. Matt for later in the show and said maybe he will return the favor…
Hannifan noted that Jeff Hardy was “injured” and wouldn’t be able to defend Matt. He hyped some upcoming matches heading into the first commercial break… [C]
Backstage, Daria Rae told Jason Hotch that Mustafa Ali recommended that he face Special Agent Zero. Daria followed up by saying that Ali recommended a special referee. Mila Moore entered the picture wearing a referee outfit…
Frankie Kazarian and Avery Styles made their entrance for Kazarian’s King Speech talk show segment. Kazarian boasted about beating Moose at TNA Lockdown. He unveiled a crown and said he was coronating himself as “your king.” Kazarian said a crown like his is earned rather than being handed out. He said he knows how much Canadians love handouts, which drew good heat. Kazarian boasted that he is the one true King of TNA.
Moose made his entrance and spoke as he walked to the ring. Moose said Kazarian looked ridiculous and mocked him for having a cheap-looking crown. Moose asked if he got the crown from Dollarama (a Canadian dollar store chain), which got a rise out of the live crowd.
Moose entered the ring and asked Kazarian if he knew what words came to mind when he looked at his crowd. “Awesome, great wrestler, and snappy dresser,” Kazarian assumed. Moose set him straight by saying, “Bitch.” Kazarian said he knew Moose was politicking for another cage match.
Moose said he was actually challenging him to a one-on-one match. Kazarian declined. Moose said a real king would give him a match next week. Kazarian declined again. Moose said no one in the locker room would look at Kazarian as a king if he didn’t agree to the match. Kazarian said he would face Moose next week if Moose agreed to put his TNA career on the line. Moose agreed and told Kazarian to bring the crown with him, because he’ll do whatever he wants with it after he wins. Kazarian said he’d wear the crown to Moose’s funeral… [C]
Powell’s POV: Kazarian and Moose were fine. I understand not rushing Avery Styles if he’s not ready, but the buzz over him signing with the company is going to fade if he just stands around and listens to Kazarian cut promos. TNA should consider advertising Avery as having his first match in every city they go to. It would be a nice selling point for their shows, and if he’s not ready for TV, he can still get reps by working dark matches at their events.
Backstage, Gia Miller interviewed Gabby Forza, who spoke excitedly about challenging for the Knockouts Championship later in the show. Forza said she was doing it for the gnomes, and gnomes love gold…
Rohit Raju made his entrance while he was shown delivering a pre-taped inset promo. Fabian Aichner’s entrance followed…
2. Fabian Aichner vs. Rohit Raju in a qualifier for the six-way match for the vacant X Division Championship. KC Navarro, who already qualified for the six-way match, sat in on commentary. Late in the match, Aichner clotheslined Raju and then hit him with his Hasta la Vista sit-out powerbomb finisher for the win…
Fabian Aichner defeated Rohit Raju in roughly 6:00 to qualify for the six-way match for the vacant X Division Championship at Bound For Glory.
Powell’s POV: It was good to see Raju back in TNA, even if he’s not under contract. Raju is a good wrestler who was saddled with some bad gimmicks, but he always made the most of them.
A Zoey Serrano video package aired. She recalled growing up in San Bernardino, California. She said she moved more times than she could count, and watching pro wrestling was the one constant in her life. She said she could be anywhere in the world and she felt at home and at peace. She said she went to a pro wrestling school after she graduated high school. She said she got to travel the world and had it all in the palm of her hand, but one night changed her life forever. A photo showed her in a hospital bed after suffering a major knee injury. She said that 14 years of blood, sweat, and tears and it was gone.
Serrano said she had to reevaluate and wondered where she went wrong. She said she wasn’t staying true to who she was and tried to keep everyone else happy. She said all of that has changed in TNA. Serrano said she doesn’t need to shake her ass or have a 15-second viral video. She said she needs to stay true to who she is and show that she is the very best in the industry. Serrano said no one in the locker room can lace her boots. She said she’s the new face of the Knockouts Division and called it the purest mentality…
Split-screen shots showed Jason Hotch on one side and Agent Zero, Mila Moore, John Skylar, and Tasha Steelz on the other, while Hannifan hyped the Hotch vs. Zero match for after the break… [C]
3. Special Agent Zero (w/John Skylar, Tasha Steelz) vs. Jason Hotch, with Mila Moore as special referee. The match was joined in progress. Footage aired of Zero attacking Hotch before the match. Hannifan said Moore rang the bell early, which is why they were joining the match in progress. Hotch had a couple of early pin attempts, but Moore looked at her fingernails and wouldn’t make the count. Steelz entered the ring and confronted Moore. They got physical, and then Steelz ripped off Moore’s referee shirt to reveal her bra. Moore moved her hair for the camera shot they were looking for, and then covered up like she was embarrassed before leaving the ring. Steelz put on the referee shirt. Zero grabbed Hotch for a choke bomb, but Hotch rolled him into a pin. Steelz made a fast three count…
Jason Hotch beat Special Agent Zero in roughly 5:00.
Hannifan said he couldn’t imagine the match being officially recognized by TNA given the way the finish went down…
Powell’s POV: With Impact typically being a taped show, it’s uncommon for TNA to join matches in progress. I wonder if they joined this match in progress to sell the idea that Moore started the match early, as Hannifan said, or if there was a botch or a production issue. I’m impressed if they came up with that as a cover story because it’s certainly plausible. There wasn’t much to the match since it was mostly about Moore’s antics as the special referee. I get what they were going for with turnabout being fair play, but the crowd didn’t pop for Hotch winning via the fast count.
Hannifan hosted the sponsored injury report. Jeff Hardy is still out after being attacked by a mystery person, and there is no timetable for his return. Ryan Nemeth, who was also attacked by the mystery person, was medically cleared. BDE is out after the Righteous carried him away last week. Hannifan said BDE’s condition and whereabouts remain unknown. Matt Hardy has lingering issues from Lockdown, but he has been cleared for tonight’s main event…
Powell’s POV: First, Rosemary disappeared, and Allie was the only person who cared, and she couldn’t even be bothered to leave the building while searching for her tag team partner. And now BDE has been missing for a week, and no one seems to care.
Gabby Forza was shown walking backstage. She stopped and put on her gnome hat. Xia Brookside was shown elsewhere backstage while Rehwoldt said the Knockouts Title match was up next… [C]
[Hour Two] Matt Hardy was warming up backstage when Leon Slater showed up and wished him well in his TNA World Championship match. Slater said he would be challenging for the title at Bound For Glory regardless of the outcome of Hardy’s match. They both agreed that facing one another would be an honor.
Slater walked away and crossed paths with Jason Hotch, who said he never got to thank him. Hotch said Slater pulled his head “out of my you know what.” Hotch told Slater to get the TNA World Title at Bound For Glory, and said he was focused on regaining the TNA International Championship…
A small gnome figurine was on the stage, and then Gabby Forza made her entrance. Additional figurines were on the ring steps. Xia Brookside’s entrance followed…
4. Xia Brookside vs. Gabby Forza for the Knockouts Championship. McKenzie Mitchell delivered the in-ring introductions and billed Forza as the world’s strongest gnome, which didn’t get much of a reaction. Forza pressed Brookside over her head and then performed an airplane spin into a Samoan Drop, which led to her getting a two count.
Forza continued to dominate the offense and hit a Vader Bomb. Forza had Brookside pinned, but the champion put her leg over the bottom rope to break it. Brookside rolled to the floor, grabbed her title, and wanted to leave. Indi Hartwell walked onto the stage to block her path. Daria Rae walked out to confront Hartwell. Brookside clotheslined Forza over the top rope and then hit her with the Knockouts Title belt while the referee was watching Hartwell and Rae. The referee turned around and made the three count…
Xia Brookside defeated Gabby Forza in roughly 6:00 to retain the Knockouts Championship.
The broadcast team hyped the remaining matches and segments… [C]
Powell’s POV: A lousy finish that made the referee look like a moron for watching Hartwell and Rae rather than the wrestlers in the ring. Forza is impressive, but her gnome gimmick hasn’t caught on with the TNA fans yet.
Knockouts Tag Team Champions Allie and Kiera Hogan spoke on the backstage interview set. Hogan said that because she pinned M by Elegance during the Knockouts Tag Team Title match at Lockdown, she will be M’s first challenger for the Knockouts TV Title next week. Allie was giddy about the possibility of Hogan becoming a double champion…
Elijah made his entrance for his concert segment. He started to play a song in the ring when Alisha Edwards interrupted by asking, “Do you wanna know something?” Alisha walked to the ring with fellow System members Eddie Edwards, Cedric Alexander, Bear Bronson, and Brian Myers. The System walked to ringside. Eddie said they had a list of people who don’t belong in their locker room. Eddie said Ricky Sosa is at the top of the list. Eddie said Elijah better be careful or they’d put his name right next to Sosa’s.
Ricky Sosa made his entrance when the System members were on the ring apron. They dropped back to the floor once Sosa entered the ring. Sosa challenged two System members to face him and Elijah next week. Eddie accepted the challenge. Sosa said they would whoop their asses…
Powell’s POV: But what about the concert?!? Okay, not really.
Matt Hardy was featured in a video that included highlights of Jeff Hardy being placed in an ambulance and some of Matt’s issues with the Nemeths. Matt sat down at a table. Jeff Hardy showed up in his Willow the Wisp garb. Willow asked Matt if it was risky to leave himself vulnerable to a Nemeths attack. “Isn’t that what life is, a risk?” Matt asked. Willow said correct and then did his laugh. A crew member entered the room and asked Matt if he was talking to somebody. Willow wasn’t in the room. Matt said he was firing himself up and motivating himself for the match… [C]
Powell’s POV: So, Matt’s character is dabbling in hallucinogenics. I’m not judging him.
Leon Slater was shown knocked out on top of a forklift. Hannifan wondered if Ryan Nemeth was behind it while citing Slater’s relationship with Matt Hardy…
“The Righteous” Vincent and Dutch made their entrance, and then Rich Swann’s followed…
5. Vincent (w/Dutch) vs. Rich Swann. Hannifan recalled the Righteous seemingly abducting BDE on last week’s show and said BDE has been missing ever since. Swann threw a kick at Vincent, who moved, and the kick took out the referee. REF BUMP!!! Vincent put Swann down with a DDT and then motioned for someone in the back to come out.
BDE walked out dressed in all white and looked like he was in a trance. BDE entered the ring, grabbed Swann’s head, and pulled him up from the mat. BDE let go of Swann and dropped Vincent with a cutter. Swann hit a 450 splash, and the referee magically woke up just in time to make the three count. Afterward, Swann raised BDE’s arm before they hugged…
Rich Swann defeated Vincent in roughly 5:00.
Separate shots showed Matt Hardy and Nic Nemeth walking backstage while Hannifan said the TNA World Championship match was up next… [C]
Powell’s POV: An abduction angle just to set up BDE rejecting the Righteous? It didn’t do much for me, but the live crowd popped for the cutter spot. BDE walking out in a trance gave me flashbacks to the Get Out movie.
The following matches were advertised for next week’s TNA Impact: M by Elegance vs. Kiera Hogan for the Knockouts TV Title, Elijah and Ricky Sosa vs. Eddie Edwards and Cedric Alexander, Zoey Serrano vs. Harley Hudson, and Moose putting his TNA career on the line in a match against Frankie Kazarian…
The broadcast team spoke about the tale of the tape graphic for the main event, and then the entrances took place…
6. Nic Nemeth vs. Matt Hardy in a No DQ match for the TNA World Championship. McKenzie Mitchell delivered in-ring introductions for the championship match. The wrestlers traded punches to start the match, and then Matt clotheslined Nic over the top rope to the floor. Matt followed and slammed Nic’s head on the ring steps. Matt pulled a table out from underneath the ring. Matt eventually leaned it against the ring apron and then suplexed Nic through it. [C]
Matt set up for a Twist of Fate, but Nic shoved him into a chair that was wedged between the ropes. Nemeth hit a Fameasser and covered Matt for a two count. Nic leaned a table in a corner of the ring and tried to shove Matt through it, but Matt fought back. A short time later, Matt ran Nic into the table, but it didn’t break. Matt tried again, and this time the table broke. Matt wrapped a chair around Nic’s neck and then hit the Twist of Fate.
Matt covered Nic and had him beat, but Ryan Nemeth showed up and pulled the referee out of the ring. Matt took out Ryan with a Twist of Fate on the floor. Matt returned to the ring, hit another Twist of Fate on Nic, and covered him, but Nic put his foot over the bottom rope.
Matt went back to ringside and placed Ryan on a table that was set up on the floor. Hannifan said the pin has to happen in the ring, but the referee determined that Nic’s foot was outside the ring when he put his foot over the bottom rope. Hannifan said it’s a gray area that he doesn’t agree with. Matt jumped off the apron and put Ryan through the table with an elbow drop.
Matt returned to the ring. Nic low-blowed Matt and covered him for a near fall. Nic grabbed a wrench from ringside and wound up to hit Matt with it, but Matt low-blowed him and then rolled him into a pin for a near fall. Matt went for a Twist of Fate, but Nic stuffed it and then hit him with the wrench before pinning him.
Nic Nemeth defeated Matt Hardy in a No DQ match in roughly 14:00 to retain the TNA World Championship.
TNA President Carlos Silva entered the ring and gave the title belt to Nic, who celebrated his win. The broadcast team recapped the finish. The producer credits were shown as Hannifan closed the episode by saying the Bound For Glory main event remains Nic Nemeth vs. Leon Slater…
Powell’s POV: A decent brawl that lacked suspense, because it was just hard to imagine them moving the title to Matt this close to Bound For Glory. I liked that Hannifan explained why the referee stopped his count when Nemeth put his foot over the bottom rope and then said he disagreed with the rule. That’s good sports-like talk that we don’t get enough of from pro wrestling broadcast teams.
Overall, this was a middle-of-the-road episode. They did a good job of making the TNA World Championship match feel important with hype, promos, and shots of the champion and the challenger backstage throughout the night.
