WWE 205 Live on WWE Network
Streamed live on August 27, 2019 from Baton Rouge, Louisiana at Raising Cane’s Riverfront Center
The broadcast team was Vic Joseph, Nigel McGuinness, and Aiden English… The show opened up with a recap of last week’s Captain’s Challenge match and highlighted Humberto Carrillo and Oney Lorcan getting the victory for their team. 205 Live general manager Drake Maverick declared that in the show’s main event, Lorcan would take on Carrillo to determine the challenger for Drew Gulak’s WWE Cruiserweight Championship at Clash of Champions…
1. Kalisto vs. Ariya Daivari The two men started the match with a lockup and Kalisto whipping Daivari off only for him to come back and barge Kalisto to the ground. They continued to grapple with Kalisto trying to wrench Daivari down with a headlock, before changing strategies and using the ropes to hit a roll up.
Daivari kicked out and after Kalisto goaded him in with a taunt, Kalisto was able to whip Daivari out of the ring and hit a suicide dive. Kalisto tried to follow up by tossing Daivari into the ring and trying for a corner clothesline, but Daivari propped him over the ropes and to the apron, dropkicking him to knock him outside.
Daivari used the steel steps to weaken Kalisto, before hitting him with a stun gun in the ring to work on Kalisto’s ribs. Daivari used a neckbreaker as well, before repeatedly jamming his elbow into Kalisto’s back. At one point, Kalisto read the elbow and hit an elbow of his own to try and turn the tables, however Daivari got his bearings and rocked Kalisto with a couple of kicks and a lariat to ground Kalisto again.
Daivari wrenched a chin lock now with Kalisto on the ground. The luchador propped himself to his feet and tried to run at Daivari but was caught with a spinebuster from the Minnesota native. Kalisto kicked out of the pinfall attempt and found a second wind, brawling with Daivari before disorienting him and catching him with a huracanrana.
Kalisto couldn’t get the pinfall however and tried to rally and hit the Salida del Sol. Daivari pushed Kalisto off and rolled to the ropes. He and Kalisto fought on the ropes, with Daivari trying for a suplex, but Kalisto reversing this into a rana whip to the floor. Both men made the count back to the ring as Kalisto rolled Daivari back in.
Kalisto hit a 450 splash and went for the pinfall, however he made a mistake and hooked Daivari’s legs so far back that they ended up on the ropes. Daivari got the rope break due to this and with Kalisto struggling to get his bearings after this, Daivari hit the Devil-lock Lariat, which the commentators called the ‘Persian Twist’ to get the pinfall victory.
Ariya Daivari defeated Kalisto.
Daivari tried to beat up Kalisto after the match, but Gran Metalik and Lince Dorado ran out to drive him away. Daivari wasn’t beaten away as much as Dorado warded him off non-violently and the two argued, with Daivari trying to bring Dorado over to his side. Dorado resisted and stuck by the Lucha House Party (for now)…
Anish’s Thoughts: A smooth match all the way through that continues Daivari’s storyline with Lucha House Party and Lince Dorado by way of the post match shenanigans.
A backstage interview aired with Tony Nese saying that he would do anything and everything to win back the WWE Cruiserweight Championship, but maybe he needed to change something as just being the premiere athlete wasn’t working…
The Singh Brothers delivered a backstage promo and said that they were going to go and study the ways of Bollywood actors so that they could come back as a better tag team, for some reason. Onward to the main event…
2. Oney Lorcan vs. Humberto Carrillo for a shot at the WWE Cruiserweight Championship at Clash of Champions. The two men started the match by shaking hands. Lorcan and Carrillo felt each other out for a little bit, exchanging headlock’s and leg locks for a bit before finding a stalemate. Carrillo tried to change the pace by whipping Lorcan and using some high flying to gain the advantage and pin Lorcan.
Neither man won out in the initial exchange and continued to work at each other. Lorcan tried to hit the half-and-half suplex at one point during a slick wrist lock exchange, but Carrillo blocked it. Lorcan settled for a kitchen sink knee and then rammed Carrillo’s head into the turnbuckle.
Lorcan followed up with a front suplex and a pinfall attempt, but Carrillo kicked out. Lorcan uppercutted Carrillo to the ground and locked in a body scissors to wear him out. Carrillo almost reversed into a pinfall, but Lorcan saw it and kicked out. Lorcan switched it up and tried to lock in a rear naked choke, but Carrillo managed to struggle and force a pinfall again, prompting Lorcan to let go of the hold.
Lorcan continued to try for the half-and-half suplex, but Carrillo wasn’t weakened enough. Lorcan tried to work Carrillo’s back but Carrillo saw this coming and reversed a strike to shift the momentum and hit Lorcan with a flurry of springboard moves and a backwards rolling Moonsault. Carrillo tossed Lorcan out of the ring and hit a tope, but when he tried to follow up in the ring, Lorcan hit a quick soccerball kick and tried for a pinfall.
Carrillo kicked out and he and Lorcan went back and forth. Carrillo had Lorcan down by the corner and he went for a Moonsault but Lorcan got the feet up and followed up with uppercuts to Carrillo in the corner. Carrillo countered one uppercut and the two did battle on the apron. Carrillo knocked Lorcan to the outside and hit another dive, before rolling Lorcan into the ring.
Carrillo tried a handstand splash, but Lorcan knocked him down and forced another brawl. They brawled to the apron again and then back into the ring where Carrillo hit a sitout powerbomb. Lorcan kicked out of the subsequent pinfall attempt and got up to slug with Carrillo. The two men went strike for strike all the way out of the ring, therefore Lorcan chased him there and hit a half-and-half suplex onto the floor.
Lorcan went to the top rope and hit a rolling senton onto Carrillo on the outside. Lorcan rolled him into the ring and then hit yet another rolling senton onto Carrillo and went for the pinfall, but Carrillo kicked out.
Lorcan signaled for a super half-and-half-plex. He and Carrillo did battle on the top rope, eventually ending up with Lorcan being front suplexed off the top rope. Carrillo followed up with a corkscrew Moonsault and got the pinfall victory.
Humberto Carrillo defeated Oney Lorcan to earn a WWE Cruiserweight Title shot at Clash of Champions.
After the match, Drew Gulak appeared on the big screen and sarcastically congratulated Carrillo and then reinforced that this is his 205 Live…
Anish’s Thoughts: This was a really well worked and methodical match. I loved that the commentators brought up that Lorcan was the last man to beat Carrillo on 205 Live. Carrillo and Lorcan really both put in some good work and they really got the crowd into this match. This match had some cool spots in it, but it was honestly more fun because of how Carrillo turned the tables by forcing the brawler Lorcan to try for a high flying maneuver and make the mistake.
Overall, a fun show with two matches that moved storylines forward. I really wish WWE put more effort into pushing and promoting the characters on 205 themselves as episodes like this give me a real NXT vibe. If 205 was more consistent it could really be more popular, especially with more matches like that main event.
