Josh Mathews welcomed viewers to the “sold out” St. Clair College…

1. Wentz vs. Aiden Prince vs. Rohit Raju vs. Chuck Mambo vs. Cody Deaner vs. Petey Williams for number one contendership to the Impact X Division Championship. Rohit Raju cleared the ring early on. Rohit and Cody brawled to the outside. Mambo and Prince then paired off and fought in the ring. Mambo hit Prince with an armdrag. Prince hit Mambo with a huracanrana. Wentz, Mambo, and Prince traded forearms. Wentz took down Mambo and Prince with a corkscrew crossbody. Callis noted that Mambo has a height advantage here.

Petey hit Zachary with a huracanrana and dropkick to the back. Wentz escaped a Destroyer but not a Sharpshooter. Rohit locked in a crossface at the same time. Pete broke the hold once he saw that Rohit was in the hold. Rohit and Petey brawled. Petey hit Rohit with a codebraker. Cody cleared Rohit and himself from the ring with a lariat. Petey teased a dive but Cody stopped Petey in his tracks. Cody grabbed the Canadian Flag and put it on Petey like a cape. Petey rolled his eyes but accepted the gesture.

Petey and Cody hit the group of wrestlers outside with a dive. Rohit hit Petey and Cody off the apron. Wentz sent Rohit to the mat and Wentz ran off Rohit’s back to dive on the wrestler pile. Prince hit a dive. Mambo did a tightrope dive. Inside of the ring, Rohit hit Mambo with a sweep and stomp combo for a nearfall. Cody took down Rohit with a lariat. Mambo came in and hit Rohit with a slingshot shotgun dropkick. Prince cleared Mambo from the ring. Petey attacked Prince and went for a destroyer. Wentz hit Petey with a handstand to a knee. Prince broke the subsequent pinfall attempt.

Wentz hit Prince with a palm and CQC combo. Wentz hit Prince with a modified Dudley Dog to a Cutter. Petey kicked Wentz and hit him with a Canadian Destroyer. Rohit tossed Petey away and tried to steal the win but Cody broke it up. Cody hit Raju with a Deaner DDT. Mambo broke up the pin. Mambo missed a Destroyer Kick. Prince hit Mambo with a brainbuster. Prince hit Mambo with a 450 for the win.

Aiden Prince defeated Chuck Mambo, Rohit Raju, Zachary Wentz, Cody Deaner, and Petey Williams via pinfall in 9:17 to become number one contender to the Impact X Division Championship.

Prince sold his win with shock…

John’s Thoughts: A good X-Division match with a nice mix of high flyers and more grounded wrestlers. I used to dread these things prior to 2018, but Impact has toned down the X-Divison homogeneous 3+ person spotfests immensely so they aren’t as forgettable. I can’t say that Prince winning excites me, mostly because of unfamiliarity and how generic he comes off. Wentz comes off as a better version of Prince. I’ve even seen a lot of Chuck Mambo’s work due to Progress Wrestling and think that guy has a lot of fun comedic upside. Speaking of Wentz, I think Wentz might be better served as a more serious wrestler and then you can plug in someone like Mambo as the Michael Kelso ripoff?

The show cut to an OVE camcorder promo. Madman Fulton was behind a chain link fense. Jake was hyperactive and happy about being a champion. Dave was there. Sami said he was legit happy for Jake this time. Sami talked about how Jake brought the title to OVE. Sami wanted to put his hands on the title but Jake kept it away from him. Jake threatened the other OVE members to not take his title from him. Jake then got in Sami’s face and said “This is the greatest thing to happen to me”. Sami had the great line of, “you have a wife and children”.

Dave tried to calm things down and Sami told him to shut up, in a not-too-aggressive way. Sami then said to not worry because Tessa Blanchard is number one on their priority list. Sami talked about Tessa assaulting and violating him after Sami tried to show respect. Sami said he’s sick of Tessa and she has to deal with the monster, Madman Fulton. Sami unlocked the cage and said that Tessa is going down. Sami ended the promo by saying Thumbs up Thumbs down…

Josh Mathews hyped upcoming matches… [c]

John’s Thoughts: More great stuff from OVE with so many storyline layers being expressed. Jake was probably the worst talker of the group dating back to when Konnan used to rip the Crist Brothers apart on the mic (Dave was terrible at the time too, but he’s shown rapid improvement and is the group’s second best talker behind Sami). Jake was really good in showing confidence and poise here, expressing the story of soaring confidence as a result of becoming champ. Sami’s doing a great job showing that his manipulations and emotions are being pulled all over the place. I’m expecting a snap from Sami, but Sami might have something better in mind. Another thing with Sami, that line about “You have a wife and Children” was standout fun.

Rich Swann was shown wearing a maple leaf shirt (maybe Petey Williams merch?). Swann walked to Tessa to offer some words of support. Swann told Tessa that Fulton isn’t just a man or madman, but he’s a psychopath and crazy (wait? aren’t those essentially synonyms?). Swann said Fulton is also nearly seven foot (Wikipedia has him billed as 6’8”, he’s deceptively tall it seems). Rich also talked about how the other three OVE members can also come out of nowhere and he’s experienced this all too well. Tessa said she understands but she has to do this. Rich said he has Tessa’s back. Tessa said she understands but she has to fight this fight alone…

Josh Mathews and Don Callis checked in from ringside. Callis said that he understands that Tessa doesn’t want help, but he honestly thinks that Tessa needs help. Josh said that Jimmy Jacobs was traveling to California to check up on Brian Cage. Josh also hyped a Rhino update now that he’s in Impact…

Jessika Havok made her entrance…

2. Jessika Havok vs. John E Bravo (w/Taya Valkyrie). Bravo’s in ring gear reminds me of Baron Corbin, but a bit more bedazzled. Taya seemed a bit annoyed at John E’s antics. Callis had his fun on commentary mocking John E. John E got on his knee to seduce Havok. Callis joked that he’s proposing. John E ate Havok’s knee to the face. Havok manhandled John E all over the ring. John E escaped a pile driver with a thumb to Havok’s eye. Callis called John E a douche. Havok hit John E with a choke slam for a squash win. Josh wondered if we’re looking at the next Knockouts Champion.

Jessika Havok defeated John E Bravo via pinfall in 1:41.

Havok shot a glare over to Taya while Taya backtracked up the ramp. Su Yung then suddenly appeared on the video wall speaking in what I think is distorted tongues (though I hear that she’s also Cambodian in real life so it may be that). Havok let out a quick roar and Josh said the video might have gotten to Havok…

Josh hyped upcoming segments… [c]

John’s Thoughts: I actually thought that was quite fun. John E’s starting to grow on me as a comedy figure since they are finally giving him some sort of characterization. A bit odd that they’re presenting Havok as the babyface in this setting because Impact’s knockotus roster seems very heel heavy and I don’t think they turned Havok face? I like Su Yung’s return, it was cool, and it didn’t involve Undead Realm crap (by the way, Havok is an angel for my reviewing life because the Undead Realm died the day she showed up). I thought it was a bit confusing because as far as “coolness” is concerned, I would speculate that Su Yung would be easier to root for than Havok? That said, I’m willing to see where this goes because now they are really utilizing the women talents for their talent as opposed to using the WWE method of making them play random roles (via the Undead Realm).

Josh Alexander and Ethan Page were hyping each other up backstage. Page told Alexander to calm down and not worry about the Rascalz later in the main event. Page then recapped their recent success and talked about come of their upcoming matches. Page joked about Alexander taking out Santana and how they’re going to face some other version of LAX with Santana out. Page told Alexander not to be mad. Alexander yelled at Page, he’s being intense, about wanting to be a part of the best tag team in Impact history…

John’s Thoughts: A good start on the mic for the North. They really should give Page more promo time in particular because that guy really shined when given mic time. He was mildly entertaining as Joe Park’s strange cousin, but he really shined when he carried stoned-ass RVD in that back and forth they had.

Impact’s Indiana Jones cosplayer, Stone Rockwell, made his entrance. Callis said it looked like the village idiot got in. Stone cut a cheap pop promo while you could hear Callis constantly rolling his eyes on commentary. Ace Austin made his entrance. Callis said that Rockwell needs to be hit by a truck…

John’s Thoughts: Well, they set this up. I guess, Austin wants a match with Rockwell because Rockwell dragged him around via the penis?

3. Ace Austin vs. Stone Rockwell. Austin had the advantage early on but Rockwell hit Austin with a body slam and double fist to the ears of Austin. Rockwell caught Austin in a loving cradle which Callis said looked weird. Austin escaped and dropkicked Rockwell to the mat. Austin hit Rockwell with calculated strikes. Rockwell hit Austin with a backbreaker. Rockwell missed and impressive looking run-off senton. Austin hit Rockwell with a savate kick and Fold (Running blockbuster) for the win.

Ace Austin defeated Stone Rockwell via pinfall in 2:17.

The ring announcer called Austin “the one true ace”. Earlier, Callis mentioned how an “ace” is a term they use in New Japan to talk about the top star. Eddie Edwards attacked Ace Austin from behind, presumably for his love for the cuckold in regards to hitting on his wife (I mean, he did give her a “dick in a box”)…

John’s Thoughts: That match entertained me more than in expected. It wasn’t the greatest thing in the world, but Rockwell looked pretty decent in the short amount of time he was given. There seems to be talent and a fun personality there, but Impact just dropped this random cosplayer on us wiht no real explanation. He does show a lot of early Fallah Bahh-like upside though. Maybe he’ll be the latest pairing with Bahh after Kevin Mathews and Scarlett Bordeaux left? Anyway, they’re also doing a good job at giving Ace Austin meaningful TV minutes. After being in wheel spinning mode in both companies, it really seems like MLW and Impact are finally getting behind the talented street magician wrestler. I really hope that Austin goes over in this feud because there is no real promise behind the dead-on-arrival Crazy Eddie character.

Madison Rayne was giving Tessa Blanchard false praise backstage, but Tessa just blew Rayne off… [c]

An “inspirational” Women’s Wrestling vignette aired narrated by Tessa Blanchard…

John’s Thoughts: I really like the message there, I really do, but flaunting it like that comes off a bit too corporate? I’m not alone on this sentiment right because WWE does this shameless stuff too. It’s not the worst thing, but I believe that the adage of “show don’t tell” would be much more effective.

An ad aired for Impact’s return to the Fronton Mexico Entertainment Complex in Mexico City, Mexico (August 15 and 16)…

Eddie Edwards walked right into his wife who continues her neverending gimmick of yelling at him (poor Eddie). Eddie tried to justify that he was just keeping the creepy Austin away from Alisha. Alisha continued to yell because, of course. Alisha walked off and Eddie said “I’m glad we’re doing this again” (no kidding!)..

Moose attacking Stone Rockwell after Rockwell’s loss was shown to have happened during the break…

Moose continued his rant from last week, continuing to talk to Callis directly. Fallah Bahh walked out to catch Moose’s attention. Moose talked about how Bahh lost 100 pounds (which is true) and can now see his balls. Moose dared Bahh to enter the ring. Moose was in street clothes by the way. Moose called Bahh a ghetto ass. Moose put the boots to Bahh and said this was easy being a five star athlete. Moose told the ref to ring the bell…

John’s Thoughts: So Moose can book matches now? Hopefully they explain this as Moose jumping the gun on an upcoming match.

4. Moose vs. Fallah Bahh. Callis wondered out loud “What does Moose know about Fallah’s balls though?”. Bahh sidestepped Moose’s quick Spear attempt. Callis talked about how fast Bahh is now. Bahh gave Moose a hip attack in the corner. Bahh hit Moose with a Banzai Drop for the win.

Fallah Bahh defeated Moose via pinfall in 0:40.

Callis said this might be an upset, but also made sure to point out that Moose wasn’t dressed to wrestle. Bahh celebrated up the ramp walking with Rockwell…

Tessa Blanchard was getting ready in the locker room… [c]

John’s Thoughts: I’m not going to complain here, that was a unique and logical progression of the story they set out to tell with Moose last week. It helps that Bahh took Impact by storm a few years ago and has been a reliable-as-hell workhorse for the company (I’d call Bahh possibly the “Mr. Impact” of the Anthem era). I’m actually intrigued to see where this goes. I think they also might go the direction I called right before this segment in pairing Bahh with Rockwell. Bahh’s deceptive credibility might help introduce Rockwell to Impact viewers (though, it’s just not the same because Kevin Mathews was SO GOOD in the Rocket Raccoon role to Bahh’s Groot)…

Moose yelled at the interview camera, “who booked this!?!” (well, you did by yelling “ring the bell”? I get what they’re going for here though). Moose said this win doesn’t count in history. Moose left looking for Bahh…

The OVE Cookie Monster theme played for Fulton and Callihan…

John’s Thoughts: By the way, through the power of Google (I’m reviewing this show on delay as usual), Sami Callihan defeated Tessa Blanchard via pinfall to become number one contender. So, just given the direction Impact seems to be heading, are they setting up Callihan to take the title off cage so Callihan could pass the title off to Tessa? While a predicable story, it’s a good story.

5. Madman Fulton (w/Sami Callihan) vs. Tessa Blanchard. Callihan did his usual pre match manhandling of Fulton before the match. After the bell, Tessa went right at Fulton but Fulton no-sold the strikes due to his monster status. Fulton caught Tessa during a Magnum attempt. Fulton planted Tessa with his signature deadlift chokeslam (they’re doing a pretty decent job establishing that move). Fulton dragged Tessa to the apron and chanted OVE. Fulton gave Tessa a front Suplex. Sami hyped up his monster to the camera.

John’s Thoughts: Sami’s not only a great wrestler and a talker, but the guy can simultaneuously play a great manager at the same time for the likes of Fulton of the Crist Brothers.

Fulton deadlifted Tessa into a bear hug. Tessa ragdolled a bit, but then tensed back up. Tessa ripped off one of Fulton’s dreadlocks (or hair extensions?).Fulton let go of the hold and looked at his fallen dread to show that it affected him somehow. Tessa dodged a stomp. Tessa floated into a DDT on Fulton with Fulton landing on his feet. Tessa gave Fulton many strikes but couldn’t get Fulton off his feet, but he was staggered. Fulton recovered and caught Tessa running into his big boot. Callihan gave Fulton a steel chair. Sami slapped Fulton and said “KILL HER”. Tommy Dreamer ran out to save Tessa and he prompted the ref to ring the bell because he attacked Fulton with a Kendo Stick.

Madman Fulton defeated Tessa Blanchard via an apparant DQ in 5:05.

John’s Thoughts: By the way, since Tommy Dreamer has his Kendo Stick back, can we assume that “Kenny” and all potential re-iterations of Kenny are now dead and buried? Which reminds me, where in the world is Killer Kross?

Fulton snagged Dreamer’s stick and gave Dreamer a shortarm lariat. Tessa grabbed the stick and whacked Fulton all over to save Dreamer. Fulton fought through but Tessa smacked him in the head. Dreamer and Tessa used the stick as a lariat to send Fulton to ringside. Sami grabbed Fulton’s dreads like a dog leash and pulled his monster into retreat while Tessa and Tommy stood tall in the ring to Tessa’s entrance theme…

John’s Thoughts: More good storytelling here that protected a bunch of players involved. I’m starting to gain a lot of trust with Impact in certain aspects of storytelling. There’s still groan inducing relics of bad Anthem booking with people like the Rascalz or Crazy Eddie, but all of the new stuff has been fun and top notch. This match prevented Fulton from eating a loss while protecting Tessa. It makes total sense for Tommy Dreamer to run out because Dreamer has established himself as a hardcore white knight for years. I also credit Dreamer with being a very underrated hard-worker that’s flying under the radar in 2019.

Highlights aired of Elgin’s assault on Brian Cage from last week, and Rhino’s unmasking…

Elgin was cutting a promo in a stairwell. He talked about how Rhino decided to attack the biggest person in the yard. Elgin said in Impact, as opposed to WWE or ECW, things are different. Elgin said Rhino used to be a man-beast but he has nothing on Elgin. Elgin said Rhino is a coward. Elgin said everyone he’s faced so far is a coward and he sent everyone packing… [c]

Some random lady in a white dress walked into the locker room. She was surrounded by Kiera Hogan and Madison Rayne’s bickering. The new girl challenged Rayne and Kiera to settle things in the ring (uhm, we still don’t know who the hell this is? She could be a civilian for all we know). Kiera and Madison then bickered over who gets to sit on the locker room couch…

Josh Mathews hyped up the weekend’s SoCal events as well as the Mexico tapings…

Impact aired the Impact Plus Match of the Week. It was The Motor City Machine Guns vs. Generation Me (a.k.a. The Young Bucks) from Bound for Glory 2010. They actually aired the match in full, about 15 minutes or so. Thank God I’m watching this with the ability to fast forward…

Jimmy Jacobs was approaching the house of Brian Cage and Melissa Santos (I believe Taya announced on Impact in a throwaway line that they are married now). Melissa opened the front door to talk with Jimmy. Melissa talked about how Cage isn’t doing too good at the moment and they would prefer privacy at the moment. Jacobs said he understands but could Melissa possibly give the viewers a health update. Jacobs tried to bypass Melissa. Melissa stopped Jimmy and agreed to answer all questions next week with Jimmy in a sit-down situation…

John’s Thoughts: Jacobs was a bit pushy here but there were some positives. For one, Jacobs is a huge upgrade over the Rafael Morffi guy that has a bunch of last names. Jacobs being more normal here also comes off better than whatever he was trying to do as “The Zombie Princess” (which I never understood. Sami Callihan’s lame-ass Ohio zombie character made more sense than Jacobs). Melissa was also pretty decent here too. I was never a huge fan when they used her in love stories in Lucha Underground, mostly because of her sub-par acting. The acting was better here and I’m willing to see what they do with this. That said, Melissa is so talented as an interviewer (and you guys haven’t seen her amazing ring announcer work), that I wouldn’t want to stretch her thin and overexpose her as a character.

An Impact Mexico TV Taping ad aired…

Rhino was shown in front of a brick wall cutting one of his old ECW-style promos. Rhino said “f–k legal actions” in regards to the 90-day non compete. Rhino talked about how he was going to get paid a lot [by WWE] to sit in catering. Rhino said he doesn’t give a f–k about money. Rhino said he can take things to the extreme or make an impact. Rhino said he likes violence. He said there’s a Rhino on the loose and s–t bout to get real. He said he’s about to rip every motherf–ker in half with a gore… gore… gore…

John’s Thoughts: So Rhino likes the word “f–k” (censored) now. Given Callis is on creative, I’m assuming he encouraged Rhino to do that ECW-like promo. That said, do ECW fans really have that much nostalgia for ECW-Rhino? This was around the time I started watching ECW (I was a teenager at the time), but I always saw him as a lesser version of Taz when Taz left for WWE. He was this odd combination of Taz and Goldberg that never truly clicked on a large scale. The guy does have talent. He showed a lot of good comedic timing (as Cheese-whiz Rhyno and horny bad Santa Rhyno). Speaking of such, I would totally trade off Impact’s Turkey Suit for a Santa Suit, just so we get Rhino’s masterful bad santa routine. Anyway, wait and see? Maybe ECW Rhino works? Hopefully he doesn’t squash Elgin in the process?

Josh Mathews and Don Callis checked in from ringside and talked about how intense Rhino was. Josh advertised Jake Crist vs. Aiden Prince next week. Josh then advertised a bunch of other matches including a sit-down interview with Melissa Santos. Josh also wondered if Santana will be able to compete (Haven’t they already advertised Daga in a segment?)…

The Rascalz made their entrance for the upcoming tag title match… [c]

6. “The North” Josh Alexander and All-Ego Ethan Page vs. “The Rascalz” Trey and Dez for the Impact Tag Team Championships. Josh took down Trey with a waist takeodown. Trey flipped over Josh and posed. This allowed Josh to retain control. Trey hit Josh with a roundhouse and huracanrana. Page tagged in and right into Trey’s CQC combo. Trey hit Page with the Fenix tightrope armdrag. Dez tagged in. Page managed to whip the Rascalz into each other. Trey tripped Page and Dez hit Page with a cannonball for a two count. Dez gave Page boxer punches in the corner. The Rascalz traded quick tags to cut the ring in half on Page. Many slingshot sentons ensued.

Page manage to get control again. He sent Dez into Alexander who hit Dez with a World’s Strongest Slam on the apron, impressive! The North traded quick tags to cut the ring in half on Dez. Callis noted that one fear and weakness of The North is Ethan Page possibly going into business for himself (nice attention to detail which was expressed in the RVD feud). Callis said Alexander seems more flawless to fit the Walking Weapon moniker. Dez escaped Alexander’s Torture rack. Dez did two flips to get to Trey who hit Page with a huracanrana.

Trey tripped Alexander, kicked him, and missed a meterora. The North hit Trey with a nice looking Double Team Blue Thunder Bomb for a two count. Alexander hit Trey with a release front suplex. Trey escaped the North, but Page took out Dez earlier. Trey instead hit Alexander with a scorpion kick and neckbreaker. This allowed Dez to recover and get back to the apron to await a hot tag. Dez tagged in and hit Page with a cross kick. Dez sent Alexander into Page with a body scissors. Dez took down Alexander with CQC. Dez took down Page with a moonsault. Dez hit both North members with a flip dive over the turnbuckle. [c]

Page recovered to avoid a Final Flash attempt from Dez. Trey and Dez took down Alexander with tandem offense. A double stomp led to a two count for Dez. Page pulled Dez out side and power slammed him on the ground. Trey used a tiger feint to try to huracanrana Page but Page power bombed Trey on the ring apron. Alexander manhandled Trey and backbreakered him. Trey kicked out of several pin attempts. Alexander locked Trey in an ankle lock but Trey rolled out.

Alexander gave Trey a right hand while he was perched on the top rope. Trey caught Alexander with a Cheeky Nandos kick. Alexander recovered and blocked Trey’s Tiger Feint Kick. Alexander hit Trey with a backbreaker bomb. The North hit Trey with a nice Burning Hammer into a Spinebuster combo. Dez broke up the pin attempt. All four men traded fatigued blows. The rascalz gaind the advantage with strong style chops. The North recovered when Alexander booted Dez. Alexander then caught both Rascalz flying and planted them with a very cool looking one-man running double power slam.

Alexander body slammed Trey on Dez. Alexander then missed a Kurt Angle like moonsault (Angle-like because it missed). The rascalz then gave Alexander running strikes in the corner. Trey gave Alexander Cheeky Nandos (barely) and the Rascalz hit Alexander with a double Tiger Feint Kick. Trey hit hit Alexander with his signature meteora to allow Dez to hit the Final Flash (Spiral Tap). Page broke up the pin by pulling away the ref. Dez took down Page with a suicide dive. For some reason the referee teased disqualifying Dez for breaking his tag partners potential win. Josh Mathews called out the ref on this.

The North went for a Magic Killer but Dez tripped away Page. Alexander kicked out of Trey’s Jackknife pin. Page gave Dez a DDT. Page and Alexander hit Trey with a silky smooth wheel barrow, into a neckbreaker, into a German Suplex. That was Young Bucks like sick! The North hit Trey with a straitjacket slam and Double Neutralizer for the win. Page picked up the pinfall.

The North defeated The Rascalz via pinfall in 19:10 of TV Time to retain the Impact Tag Team Championships.

After the match the North headed to the back with Josh Mathews closing the show…

But wait? There’s more. In the stinger segment, Ortiz tries to beat down the North in the Gorilla Position area. The North quickly overwhelm Ortiz. Daga runs in and saves Ortiz by attacking the North to close the show…

John’s Thoughts: Holy S–tballs that was great! (That sweet match draws a Goro Majima quote out of me). That was Impact’s best tag team match in a long time. Definitely worthy in-ring wise to make an NXT Takeover card. Also, this match is up there with some of LAX’s classics in recent years. That was splendid and definitely the North’s best match on television to date. Alexander and Dez are obvious blue-chippers, but Page and Trey really gained something here. The Rascalz looked fresh using a combo we usually don’t see from them (Dez and Wentz or Wentz and Trey are what we see often). On top of that, the lack of smoke circle did a subtle job of not scrub-ifying the Rascalz. Even more on top of that, this match if you take ads into account went well over 20 minutes. There was not a slow point in those 20.

This may be Impact’s best show of 2019? At least it felt like that to me. There was a match of the year candidate in the main event (I would still rank Elgin vs. Swann higher possibly, but this could give that match a run for it’s money). There was really good and logical storytelling throughout the show. The Undead Realm continues to be dead (for now, fingers crossed it stays dead). There was no bootleg 70s show. Even Crazy Eddie was buried under his wife’s infinite nagging. This was a great show and definitely enjoyable top to bottom.

<a class="spreaker-player"
