We live in a blessed timeline with Blood and Guts.

– This is the first year that the Blood and Guts Dynamite has not featured another match on the show. Even with pairing this show down to two matches, AEW still gave us a 20+ minute overrun. These matches went very long, which could also be attributed to each match having 12 participants instead of 10 or 8. I am sure the idea is to increase the number of humans in each match so they can each take a little less punishment, but it does extend out the matches quite a bit. I’d cap each match at five-on-five in the future to reduce the run time of the full show a bit.

– While noting this runtime, do we really need two Blood and Guts matches in one night? I could understand something like “Blood and Guts Week” with one match on Collision and one on Dynamite. This would be better formatted for one television show and give viewers at home a bit of time to process one of these matches before scrambling into the other. I love that wrestling promotions give women the same opportunities to be in matches like these that men get, but perhaps putting them on separate shows would make the impact of the matches greater. For those wondering, I would have moved the men’s Blood and Guts match to Collision this year.

– Megan Bayne has proven to be an MVP (not the wrestler) caliber player when put in hardcore matches. Between the Chicago Street Fight at All Out a couple of months ago and her performance here, she is making a reputation for herself. Bayne was awesome in this match, bringing both violence and an absurd amount of blood.

– Certain portions of the Women’s Blood and Guts match were needlessly complicated. When was there a net gun? Did we need a fireball spot to go wrong? These matches are about carnage and violence. I already get old-man style grumpy at the inclusion of absurd amounts of weapons in these matches, but now wrestlers have full Batman-style gadgets to use as well. It’s too much and it takes away from the fundamental purpose of the match. These spots can also be difficult to pull off 30+ minutes into a match and covered in blood and sweat, something that should be considered in matches like these.

– I enjoyed the closing sequence of the Women’s match with Kris Statlander and Harley Cameron forcing Julia Hart to surrender with the half crab-barbed wire mouth combination platter. The babyface victory in this one made a lot of sense, and Hart was a fine choice to surrender. While it was occasionally too cute, the women’s Blood and Guts match was exciting from bell-to-bell. I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

– The storytelling around the AEW Trios Championship Texas Death Match at Full Gear has been really enjoyable. Each wrestler has such a unique angle to approach it from. Kofi and Austin Creed are being dragged into violence by Swerve. Hangman Page just wanted to have a nice time tagging with his new pals, and Swerve Strickland had to ruin that for him. Swerve himself feels compelled to seek out whatever Page is doing and get involved. Brody King just wants to protect his friend. And Bandido is filled with post-attack rage and willing to do anything for revenge. This story absolutely rules. The Texas Death Match at Full Gear is going to be a delight.

– Speaking of stories with fun interpersonal dynamics, Jon Moxley needs help from Orange Cassidy and even gave up a fork to tell him so. This promo was another gem from Moxley, who is delivering the best mic work of his career. The Conglomeration helping The Death Riders take care of The Cut (horrible faction name) will be a fun story for Anarchy in the Arena. Orange Cassidy might want to find that dark (washed denim) place in his heart and mind only Jon Moxley has taken him to.

– Kyle Fletcher needed a major statement win going into Full Gear and this Blood and Guts match was just that. I wish the story had been told in a way where Fletcher challenged Ospreay after this match instead of before. It would have made Fletcher’s case for a title match stronger and could have added some stakes to Blood and Guts itself. There is more logic in Fletcher helping his team win Blood and Guts than receiving a title shot.

– Kazuchika Okada continued his goal of being the greatest comedy wrestler in the world by entering with a leaf blower and making the most joyful face he possibly could. (Please ignore my earlier thought about gadgets in these matches for a moment, as a very funny boy smiled with a leaf blower and won me over.) This is the kind of giggle AEW offers us in their party matches and their hardcore violence matches. If Okada cannot or will not be “greatest pro wrestler in the world” anymore, at least he is the funniest. It’s a solid consolation prize for those of us who watched him through the 2010s.

– Adam Copeland surrendering after opening the show discussing the impact matches like this have on other wrestlers’ careers was a nice touch. This was also telegraphed in Will Ospreay’s promo with his team a couple of weeks ago when he asked if Copeland would submit or surrender. I assume we will get Ospreay vs. Copeland sometime soon as one last big singles main event for Copeland. I am enjoying the dynamic between Copeland and Ospreay and hope it continues to intrigue me.

Apparently I have to audio review a wrestling show that happens on a cruise ship for Dot Net Members on Saturday. I suppose that is better than watching a morally abhorrent cash grab in an active war zone, so I’ll take it!

Will Pruett writes about wrestling and popular culture at prowrestling.net.
