One can only wonder what the Skydance executives were thinking if they watched this match. Putting that aside, the wrestlers came through with a gritty brawl that felt like it could go either way. It didn’t feel like they really built to the finish as much as it just sort of happened, but I enjoyed this match more than the men’s because the women stayed inside the cage and didn’t need some of the gimmicky things that were used during the men’s match. The lack of meaningful stakes is an ongoing problem with most modern WarGames-style matches. They are often thrown together with makeshift teams and rarely come off like the culmination of a long feud. So while it was an enjoyable brawl and the work of the wrestlers was admirable, it didn’t feel like a major moment when the babyfaces won because it doesn’t change anything.

Nick Wayne video: I don’t know if Wayne wore the black suit because he went to a club during this video package, but he looked more major league than ever. He’s young, obnoxious, and his crowd heat is growing by the week. The last thing he needs is to lose momentum by Chris Jericho beating him to get one of his wins back. The fans want to see the D-bag Wayne character get his comeuppance. The longer they make the fans wait for that moment the stronger Wayne will be.

Mercedes Mone and Marina Shafir: A soft Hit for a solid verbal exchange that led to Mone attacking Shafir to get some heat. The fans have really gotten behind Shafir and clearly see this as a showdown match.

AEW Dynamite Misses

Will Ospreay, Adam Copeland, Darby Allin, Steven Borden, Matt Jackson, and Nick Jackson vs. Kyle Fletcher, Kevin Knight, Kazuchika Okada, Wardlow, Mark Davis, and Jake Doyle in a Blood & Guts match: A minor Miss. The Hit List doesn’t work very well for the Blood & Guts show. There’s a big mix of good and bad during these lengthy matches. Ultimately, I enjoyed them both despite their weak finishes. I don’t know why Adam Copeland or the viewers at home were supposed to be concerned when Fletcher threatened Ospreay with a screwdriver, when he’d already seen Fletcher hit several of Ospreay’s teammates with the weapon and none seemed any worse for wear. And if they want viewers to see the screwdriver as being potentially lethal, then why would Ospreay be upset with Copeland for saving his life by surrendering to end the match? Was Ospreay’s character willing to die for a match with nothing other than pride at stake? There was more good than bad overall, but they lost me when they did the silly powerhouse spot of Wardlow breaking the chain that held the cage door closed.

Yes, it gets a good reaction when two wrestlers fight on top of the cage (or when Darby escapes through a hole), but the idea is supposed to be that no one can get in or out once the final entrant is inside the structure. Why isn’t a traditional WarGames-style match enough for any promotion these days? All of the top promotions that hold a version of WarGames have added weapons, and the creative forces in each promotion seem to view it as a challenge to find ways for the wrestlers to get out of the cage, when that should be the last thing on their minds most years. I also felt numb when Darby was tossed from the top of the structure through some stacked tables below. Mick Foley did a lot of crazy things before he took the legendary bump off the top of the Hell in a Cell structure, but that bump topped them all. In Darby’s case, the bump off the top of the Blood & Guts cage felt like another day at the office because I’ve become desensitized after watching him take so many insane bumps over the years.

The Texas Death stipulation made official for the AEW Trios Championship match at Full Gear: A minor Miss, simply because it felt like they could have gotten a little more out of the story of Swerve Strickland trying to strong-arm the others into agreeing to the stipulation. Bandido wanting the match after being attacked by Swerve last week was logical, but I enjoyed this storyline and wish that Brody King, Kofi, and/or Austin Creed would have declined until Swerve did something else to make them give in.

(Jason Powell, founder and editor of ProWrestling.net, has covered pro wrestling full-time since 1997.
