The crowd was listed at 1,100. Walker Stewart provided solo commentary. Strangely, no on-screen graphics — I needed them for a few visiting wrestlers I don’t know.

* This year’s field is comprised of 12 teams, divided into TWO six-team Blocks. This is a round-robin tournament, so every team has at least five matches. (Presumably nearly every team will finish either 3-2 or 2-3.) AEW wrestlers Blake Christian, Lee Johnson and Nick Wayne are among this year’s competitors.

El Desperado has suffered an injury and has withdrawn from the tournament. That’s disappointing news.

1. Tatsuya Matsumoto vs. Taisei Nakahara. Basic action between the Young Lions. Matsumoto applied a half crab, but Taisei reached the ropes at 5:30. Matsumoto applied a deep Boston Crab and sat down on Nakahara’s lower back, and Taisei tapped out. Basic.

Tatsuya Matsumoto defeated Taisei Nakahara at 9:12.

2. “United Empire” Francesca and Jakob Austin Young (w/Zane Jay) vs. “House of Torture” Sho and Dick Togo in a B Block tournament match. As per usual, Sho spoke on the mic before the bell (no one to translate today), then they attacked, and we’re underway! Akira hit a dropkick on Sho. Walker noted Akira hasn’t competed in NJPW since August! Akira started barking at Jakob! (Uh-oh!) Sho threw Akira to the floor, and Togo hit some blows on Akira on the floor. He whipped Francesco shoulder-first into the ring post at 2:00.

In the ring, Togo tied up Akira on the mat. Akira finally hit a double stomp on Sho’s chest at 5:30, and they were both down. Jakob got the hot tag and unloaded some chops on Sho. Young hit a Shining Wizard for a nearfall. Akira called for a tag, but Young ignored him. (Uh-oh again!) Sho hit a spear on Young at 7:30. The HoT stomped on Jakob in their corner. Togo hit his flying knife-edge chop to Jakob’s groin and got a nearfall. Togo choked Jakob with his wire. Young choked Togo, but Akira stopped him! Akira barked at Young and forcibly tagged himself back in! (Uh-oh again again!)

Akira nailed a second-rope moonsault for a nearfall at 9:30. Togo got a rollup and a believable nearfall on Akira. Akira nailed the Fireball (running knees to the back of Togo’s head), but Young had made a blind tag! Akira went for a cover, but the ref informed him he wasn’t the legal man. Jakob jumped on the knocked-out Togo and got the pin. Akira was visibly irritated that Young got the pin when he nailed the finishing move. Wayne was crotched around the ring post. Douki threw Wayne into the ring, and we got the bell at 00:52 to officially begin. Wayne twisted Douki’s left arm. Kushida tagged in and also tied up Douki. On the floor, Kanemaru hit a snap suplex on Kushida at 3:00. Douki threw Kushida back into the ring, where Kanemaru hit a suplex, and he stomped on Kushida.

Douki applied a Boston Crab at 4:30, and the HoT stayed in charge and kept Kushida grounded. Kushida finally hit a DDT, but he couldn’t tag out. Nick finally got a hot tag, and he hit a shotgun dropkick on Douki, then a mid-ring Sliced Bread on Kanemaru for a nearfall at 7:30. Kanemaru hit a basement dropkick on Wayne’s knee, and he immediately applied a Figure Four. Meanwhile, Douki had Kushida tied in the Darkness Stretch, so Kushida couldn’t make the save. However, Wayne reached the ropes at 9:00.

Wayne hit a stunner on Kanemaru. Kushida hit a basement dropkick to Douki’s face. Wayne hit a Lethal Injection on Douki, then a plancha to the floor on Kanemaru. Douki went for a low blow on Kushida, but Kushida blocked it! Kanemaru sprayed whiskey in Wayne’s eyes! Douki rolled up Kushida, grabbed the ropes for added leverage, and scored the tainted pin!

“House of Torture” Yoshinobu Kanemaru and Douki (2) defeated Nick Wayne and Kushida (0) at 10:31/official time of 9:39.

4. “The Unbound Co.” Daiki Nagai and Titan vs. “The Mighty Don’t Kneel” Robbie Eagles and Kosei Fujita in a B Block tournament match. Walker reminded us that Eagles and Fujita won this tournament two years ago. The Unbound Co. attacked; we finally got a bell at 00:16. Daiki stomped on Fujita. Eagles hit a stiff kick to Nagai’s spine at 2:30. TMDK worked over Nagai in their corner. Fujita hit a bodyslam and applied a half-crab. Nagai hit a hard back elbow that sent Fujita flying at 5:00, and they were both down. Titan entered for the first time, and he hit a springboard crossbody block on Fujita.

Eagles tagged in and battled Titan. Titan hit a jumping sidekick to the jaw at 7:00. Titan tied him in a Muta Lock! Kosei broke it up. TMDK hit stereo spin kicks to Titan’s head. Unbound Co. hit stereo springboard dropkicks, then stereo dives to the floor! Nice! In the ring, Daiki slammed teammate Titan onto Eagles for a nearfall. Eagles hit an assisted DDT on Nagai, then Fujita hit a German Suplex on Nagai! Taguchi and Robbie tied up at 2:00 and traded standing switches. Robbie got winded while running the ropes for a bit of comedy. Taguchi and Sumi worked over Robbie on the floor, then Taguchi got a nearfall in the ring at 4:30.

Ishimori did a Sabre-style neck-snap between his ankles on Sumi. Yoh hit a Poetry in Motion splash into the corner at 10:00. Hyo hit a DDT on Blake for a nearfall. Lee dropkicked Yoh off the apron to the floor. Blake hit a moonsault to the floor on Yoh. They had some strange replacement music for Mistico’s entrance theme. Mistico’s jacket has the AEW logo on the sleeve, which was a bit surprising. All four brawled at the bell. Mistico hit a huracanrana on Wato. Wato and Kuukai worked over Mistico. No reason to think The Swirl won’t go 3-2 or even 4-1. The main event was good, but Yasuda was clearly going to eat the pin. The loss of El Desperado leaves this tournament wide open — I would have figured Desperado/Mistico would have been the odds-on favorite to win this.

I wondered if Francesco Akira joining Will Ospreay’s United Empire in AEW would impact him in NJPW, and it appears that will be the case, as he was immediately not getting along with Jakob Austin Young. That team should fully implode over the next week.

When Chris Charlton is absent from the booth, I hope the three American AEW guys take turns on commentary with Walker Stewart. Walker does a great job, but I’d love to hear Blake, Nick, and Lee get some valuable time in the booth.

No rest for the wicked! The tournament resumes Sunday, moving back to Korakuen Hall (which should mean Chris Charlton will return to the booth). Sunday’s matches include Robbie Eagles and Kosei Fujita vs. Blake Christian and Lee Johnson, and Mistico and Yasuda vs. Nick Wayne and Kushida.

Listen to "Pro Wrestling Boom Podcast" on Spreaker.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[2,1378,11
210
post-198776","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-newsticker","category-njpw-ppv-reports","category-ppv_reports","tag-njpw

NJPW "Super Jr. Tag League"
