Although big spot-fest matches with minimal selling aren’t for everyone, this was one of the best matches of that style. The fallout from Fletcher and Knight losing should be interesting. I’m sure Fletcher will have a great babyface run at some point, but it would be a mistake to turn him now, because there’s so much left to do with him as a heel.

Jon Moxley vs. Mark Davis for the AEW Continental Championship: The gritty slugfest stood out because it was unlike anything else on the show. As good as AEW pay-per-views are, I wish there was a better variety of match styles. Anyway, the story focused on Moxley being in a rough state emotionally following the death of Pac. They easily could have gotten more out of this, but it’s probably for the best to wrap it up quickly to avoid any accusations of attempting to exploit Pac’s passing. On a lighter note, they did a really nice job of making it seem like Davis had a chance to win the match before Moxley finally put him away. I worried about Davis when his longtime tag team partner Kyle Fletcher took off as a singles act, but he’s done a terrific job of reinventing himself.

Will Ospreay vs. Samoa Joe vs. Mike Bailey vs. Adam Copeland vs. Konosuke Takeshita vs. Kazuchika Okada vs. Ricochet vs. Darby Allin in a Clockwork Carnage match for the AEW World Championship: Perhaps I’ve seen too many King of the Mountain and Iron Survivor Challenge matches, but the number of falls during the match didn’t bother me as much as it did others. I still prefer a more sports-like approach, with the vast majority of the AEW World Championship matches being one-on-one. But this was very good for what it was. I enjoyed the way Copeland rallied late with back-to-back pinfalls to tie the leaders after being shut out until then. I thought it would have been a bit much to have the inaugural version of this match go to overtime, so I liked the finish of Ospreay scoring the deciding fall with three seconds remaining. The only major disappointment was Takeshita being eliminated during the first half of the match.

Swerve Strickland, Kofi, and Austin Creed vs. Hangman Page, Bandido, and Brody King in a best-of-three falls match for the AEW Trios Titles: Another strong outing from these teams. One of the great things about these matches is that if there’s ever a lull, all it takes is Swerve and Hangman trading punches to wake up the crowd. As fun as their story was, Bandido came through with the best performance of the match. Swerve refusing to shake hands with the new champions was on point for his character, and I wonder if this will lead to him moving on from Kofi and Creed. Meanwhile, King shoved Page at one point in the match. Was that just a tease for dissension that seemed to end there, or was it the start of friction developing between the two?

“The Motor City Machine Guns” Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin vs. “FTR” Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler in the first match of a best-of-five series: It was technically a pre-show match, but more of the match aired during the pay-per-view. The match started slow, so it’s hard to imagine that the ten minutes that aired during the pre-show generated many impulse buys. They picked up the pace as the match went on and finished strong, with a minor upset of the babyface team winning the first match of the series. The first match of the series was entertaining enough that I came away wishing they went with a best-of-seven series.

Andrade El Idolo vs. Tommaso Ciampa for the AEW National Championship: A soft Hit. I’m not a fan of wrestlers coming off like their goal is to entertain rather than win. At the same time, most of the comedy in this match was good for a chuckle and got over with the live crowd. That said, one can only hope that Andrade will take a different approach when he cashes in his contract for a shot at the AEW World Championship. Where does Ciampa go next after failing to win the AEW National Championship this month and the AEW International Championship last month?

Nick Wayne vs. Chris Jericho: A soft Hit for a solid match and a nice win for Wayne. The most important thing about this program is Wayne coming out stronger than he was going in. He’s already in a better place than he was, and I’d be fine if the feud ended here, but this didn’t seem like this was the final chapter.

Mercedes Mone vs. Thekla for the AEW Women’s Championship: A soft Hit for a match that fell below my lofty expectations, yet was still entertaining. The build to the match was very disappointing. It seemed like fans were ready to embrace Thekla as a babyface when she showed up at All In. Mone suffered an injury, which delayed her match with Thekla, who was moved into a No. 1 contender’s match against Willow Nightingale. Given the circumstances, it was understandable that Thekla remained a heel while facing the popular Willow character. Unfortunately, nothing changed coming out of that match. The fans weren’t given any added incentive to get behind Thekla, and no effort was made to make her match with Mone feel special. On a side note, Thekla no-selling the loss to Mone and even dancing at ringside moments later was disappointing. I get that she’s an unorthodox character, but she should sell the agony of defeat after failing to regain the top title in her division.

AEW WrestleDream Misses

Persephone vs. Dani Luna vs. Hyan vs. Queen Aminata in a four-way for the TBS Championship: I was surprised last month when Persephone’s open challenge made the pay-per-view lineup, and again this month when this four-way match wasn’t featured on the pre-show. The four-way felt thrown together with little regard for building up the challengers. I’m not even sure what Hyan or Luna did to earn their spots in a storyline sense. Persephone beat open challenger Luna at All Out, and Luna pinned Persephone’s partner Britt Baker in a tag team match during Wednesday’s three-hour block. The match was fine, but the wrestlers were put in the unenviable position of having to follow the AEW Tag Team Title match.

(Jason Powell, founder and editor of ProWrestling.net, has covered pro wrestling full-time since 1997.
