Harwood and Wheeler isolated Shelley for a stretch. Just as Shelley dove to make the tag, Harwood pulled Sabin off the apron.

Sabin eventually took a hot tag and performed a springboard into a DDT on Harwood for a near fall. Sabin went up top, but Wheeler cut him off from the apron. Sabin was able to roll up Harwood, who kicked out hard enough that Sabin ended up near the ropes, and Wheeler punched him from the floor. Harwood picked up a near fall. Sabin performed a cutter that led to another near fall.

Shelley tagged in and went up top, but Wheeler cut him off. Sabin charged at Wheeler, only to tumble to ringside when Wheeler pulled the top rope down. Wheeler went up top, but Sabin cut him off and then hit Harwood with a missile dropkick. Harwood and Wheeler hit a spike piledriver on Sabin for a good near fall. An “AEW” chant broke out while the broadcast team noted that they were over 25 minutes into the match.

Harwood and Wheeler went for the Shatter Machine on Sabin, but he avoided the move. They didn’t really pick up the pace until the pay-per-view started, so I’m not sure if the action was so compelling that it would entice a lot of impulse buys. I can’t help but wonder if having the best pre-show matches carry over to the pay-per-view will sour some fans from watching the pre-shows if they have no intention of ordering the pay-per-view. Putting all of that aside, the match got better as it went on and turned out to be a really good way to kick off what should be a hell of a series. Hey, is it too late to make this a best-of-seven series?

A WrestleDream video package aired… Excalibur set up a video package that set up the AEW Women’s Championship match… Two men wearing masks that covered their mouths carried a platform that Thekla rode into the building. Renee Paquette spoke briefly from ringside while Mercedes Mone made her entrance via the stage…

1. Mercedes Mone vs. Thekla for the AEW Women’s Championship. Ring announcer Arkady Aura delivered in-ring introductions for the championship match. Mone wore her face shield. A couple of minutes in, Thekla struck the spider pose in the ropes. Money charged (slowly) and tumbled to the floor when Thekla moved. Thekla dropped to the floor and slammed Mone’s head on the apron before running her into the barricade twice.

Back in the ring, Thekla performed a top rope crossbody block for a two count. Thekla superkicked a kneeling Mone and then struck her spider pose for no good reason. Mone picked her up from that position, threw knees at her head, and then performed a lung blower. Mone took offensive control.

A short time later, Mone was on the apron when she went for double knees, but Thekla moved. Mone sold knee pain on the floor. Thekla jumped off the apron and double stomped her back. Thekla stood over Mone and acted like she was swinging a dick over her.

Thekla and Mone fought on the ropes. Thekla suplexed Mone to the mat while using her legs to remain hanging from the ropes. Thekla jumped from the ropes and double-stomped Mone’s back. Thekla did her silly spider walk despite the pose backfiring earlier. Thekla speared Mone and covered her for a two count.

Mone caught Thekla going for a kick and hit her with one of her own. Mone performed a sunset bomb that caused the back of Thekla’s head to hit the middle turnbuckle pad. Mone followed up with double knees in the corner and then a meteora from the middle rope that led to a near fall.

Mone set up for the Moneymaker, but Thekla countered with a head-scissors on the mat and held on after Mone grabbed the ropes until the referee’s count reached four. Thekla performed a Stomp and then covered Mone, who put her foot on the bottom rope.

Mone sat on the apron and caught Thekla with a kick. Thekla rolled Mone into a pin for a good near fall. Thekla went for a Stomp that Mone avoided. Mone hit her Moneymaker finisher and got the three count.

Mercedes Mone defeated Thekla in roughly 15:00 to retain the AEW Women’s Championship.

Powell’s POV: A good match, though they never really sold me on the possibility of Thekla winning despite her near falls. This is a rare time when I would have been fine with a cheap finish to set up a rematch rather than having Mone beat Thekla clean. The announcers tried to say that Thekla may have won had Mone not been wearing the face shield when Thekla connected with the Stomp.

A video package spotlighted the Nick Wayne vs. Chris Jericho match. Aura read an over-the-top introduction for Wayne. The fans sang along with “Judas” while Chris Jericho made his entrance…

2. Nick Wayne vs. Chris Jericho. Wayne spat on Jericho, who returned the favor. Jericho slapped Wayne, who ended up at ringside. Jericho hit him with a baseball slide dropkick and then ran him into the barricade a couple of times. Jericho removed one of his beaded necklaces and gave it to a female fan, then put another around Wight’s neck. Jericho performed a Death Valley Driver that dropped Wayne on top of the ring steps (the full steps, not the flat bottom half). Ouch.

Back in the ring, Jericho had Wayne seated on the top turnbuckle while he stood on the top rope throwing punches the fans counted along with. Wayne shoved Jericho to the floor and then hit him with a moonsault from the top rope. Wayne ran Jericho into the ring steps, and then sat on the barricade with his arms crossed.

Jericho returned to the ring. Wayne followed and put the boots to Jericho. Wayne caught Jericho with a diving uppercut and then kipped up. Jericho tripped Wayne. Jericho and Wayne traded chops and then kicks. Jericho avoided Wayne attempting a move off a handspring into the ropes and then dropped him with a clothesline. Wayne came right back and dove from the middle rope, but Jericho caught him with a Codebreaker on the way down for a two count.

<div id="prowr-548070816" class="prowr-after-content
