The crowd was maybe 175; they were definitely up this week. (Week after week, I am stunned by how much of the crowd shows up midway through the show. By the final two matches, it was absolutely packed!) Ref Scott Robinson and Brother Greatness provided commentary. Will Kiedis joined mid-show, and Paul Crockett also arrived late to provide commentary to the final matches of the night.

1. Armani Kayos vs. Will Kiedis in a spotlight match. The Australian indy star Kiedis is back for a third straight Wrestling Open. Basic reversals early on, and Kiedis kept the flamboyant Kayos grounded. However, Kayos hit an Eat D’Feat. He nailed a forward Finlay Roll, then the double-jump moonsault for the pin. Good action.

Armani Kayos defeated Will Kiedis at 6:05.

2. Alec Price vs. Don Freeze. Again, Freeze is pretty heavyset but shockingly agile, so he always pops a crowd who doesn’t expect him to do flips. Standing switches early on, and Freeze hit a dropkick and a splash into the corner. Price hit a DDT at 2:30. Alec hit a pop-up dropkick, and he dove through the ropes and crashed onto Freeze. In the ring, he hit a dropkick for a nearfall at 4:00. We lost the signal from the building for a full minute, with it returning at 5:00. Freeze hit a uranage.

Freeze hit a running Shooting Star Press; it wasn’t flawless, but it popped the crowd. Alec ran the ropes to pick up speed and hit a crossbody block for a nearfall at 6:30. They fought on the top rope, and Freeze hit a Spanish Fly to the mat for a nearfall at 8:00. Don missed a moonsault, but he hit a Baron Corbin-style Deep Six slam. Price hit an Acid Bomb, then a frog splash for the pin. That’s a helluva way to open the main show. There was a loud “Northeast Beast!” chant for Price.

Alec Price defeated Don Freeze at 9:23.

* Before Price left the ring, the signal from the building was lost again… It’s going to be one of those nights… Price was still talking when the signal returned, as Price was putting over Freeze. “You may have come up short, but you have earned my respect,” Price told him.

3. TJ Crawford vs. “Handyman” Jake Gray. Crawford is getting a title shot soon, but I wouldn’t rule out him losing here because he’s overconfident. Jake hit some forearm strikes at the bell. He tried a front guillotine choke, but TJ ran him back-first into the corner, then TJ hit a suplex and a running penalty kick to the chest at 1:30. Jake hit a dropkick that sent TJ to the floor. He then dove through the ropes at 3:30 and turned it into a DDT onto the hardwood floor.

In the ring, Jake hit a superkick. TJ hit (Bear Bronson’s) Fire Thunder Driver for the pin! “That’s a message to the champ!” Robinson said. TJ got on the mic and noted how Wrestling Open has been going for 250 straight weeks … but he doesn’t care! TG hit a twisting slingshot senton. Sal hit a hard penalty kick to the spine at 2:00. Tiny Giant hit a dropkick and some other kicks. Sal hit a half-nelson suplex and a clothesline for a nearfall.

Tiny Giant hit a Shining Wizard that clearly didn’t land and Robinson noted “he didn’t catch as much of that as he wanted to.” They fought on the ropes in the corner. Sal hit a superplex and a brainbuster for a believable nearfall at 5:30. He charged, but Tiny Giant caught him with a punch. Tiny Giant nailed the Styles Bomb for the pin. They pulled the taller Jordan into the ring and worked him over. Jordan fired the confetti cannon in their faces! He forced Kylon to dance with him; Traevon was still wearing his vest! Jaylen jumped in and hit a dropkick on King at 2:30.

Kylon hit a spinebuster on Jaylen. Waller applied a headlock and kept Jaylen grounded. Traevon got a hot tag at 6:00, and he hit a big back-body drop on Waller and a leg lariat on Kylon. Traevon hit a chokeslam. Waller hit a Lethal Injection for a nearfall. Jaylen hit a Canadian Destroyer, and all four were down at 7:30. Dustin hit a springboard clothesline. Jaylen hopped on Kylon’s shoulders, got a Victory Roll, and scored the flash pin! Katch wore a black-and-white one-piece that is making me think of DC’s Two-Face. She hit a Pump Kick at the bell, and she went for her piledriver, but Kylie escaped! We nearly had a pin in 20 seconds! Allie hit a crossbody block and some clotheslines. Kylie stomped on her in the corner at 2:00 and took control. She hit a running buttbump, and she rubbed her rear in Katch’s face. Kylie hit a hard back elbow, mounted Allie, and repeatedly punched her across the face.

Katch missed a senton; Alexa hit a flying kick for a nearfall at 4:00. Robinson noted how frequently Kylie has defended the belt; this is already her seventh defense! Katch hit some chops in the corner and a Buckle Bomb. Katch hit her buttbumps to the face, then a rolling cannonball at 5:30. She hit a Northern Light Suplex with a high bridge for a nearfall. Katch again went for her piledriver, but Alexa avoided it again. They got up and traded forearm strikes. They traded kicks. Kylie couldn’t hit a Code Red. Katch hit a sidewalk slam, and they were both down at 8:00.

Katch hit a clothesline for a nearfall. Alexa went for a rollup and put her foot on the ropes, but the ref saw it and stopped counting. Kylie hit a running knee, then a Cradle Shock slam for a believable nearfall! Alexa spun her to the mat and locked in a Rings of Saturn! However, Katch rolled her over for a nearfall. They fought to the floor at 10:30 and looped ringside. Katch hit a Northern Lights Bomb on the floor. However, neither got back into the ring before the ref reached the 10-count. He took over commentary.

8. “The Church of Greatness” Ichiban, Brother Greatness, Sammy Diaz, and Tyree Taylor vs. 23 Hazard, Peter Gianni, and “The Breadwinners” Cash McGuiness and Patrick Wheatman. The scrawny heels came out first. Brother Greatness wore his colorful pastor’s robe and had an offering basket. Each member of the Church got their own intro, so this took forever to get going. The crowd chanted, “Hallelujah!” We finally got underway with Ichiban vs. Cash, and they traded some quick reversals. BG entered, and he tied up Wheatman on the mat, and he hit a deep armdrag.

Diaz entered and hit an enzuigiri and a top-rope crossbody block on Gianni for a nearfall at 3:30. Ichiban got back in and went for a cover on Gianni, but the other heels stomped on him. The Breadwinners worked together to fight Tyree, but he fought them off. Ichiban hopped on Tyree’s shoulders so they could ‘chicken-fight’ with the Breadwinners at 6:00. Diaz hit a slingshot senton on Gianni for a nearfall. The heels began working over Diaz in their corner. 23 Hazard hit some punches to Sammy’s ribs. Ichiban got a hot tag at 9:00, and he hit a stunner on McGuiness, then a 619. Brother Greatness went to the top rope, but the Breadwinners grabbed him and slammed him to the mat.

The heels now worked over Brother Greatness in their corner. BG finally hit a springboard double dropkick. The big Tyree got the hot tag at 11:30. He hit a Pounce that sent Cash flying onto Wheatman! Gianni came off the top rope, but Tyree clocked him with a punch! Tyree hit a uranage on Gianni for a nearfall. The Breadwinners hit stereo superkicks, sending Tyree to the floor! Sammy hit a top-rope flip dive, landing on everyone deep in the crowd! (A lot of distance on that dive!) The babyface quartet got in the ring and dared the heels to get back in. The Breadwinners charged back into the ring; 23 Hazard and Gianni did not! Tyree hit the Brooklyn Zoo sit-out powerbomb on Wheatman for the pin; Hazard and Gianni made no effort to break it up. That was really fun action.

“The Church of Greatness” Ichiban, Brother Greatness, Sammy Diaz, and Tyree Taylor defeated 23 Hazard, Peter Gianni, and “The Breadwinners” Cash McGuiness and Patrick Wheatman at 15:42.

* 250 episodes… but this is the first-ever hair-versus-hair match in Wrestling Open history! Brick City hit the Business is Booming (team Bulldog Powerslam) for a believable nearfall, but Doug kicked out! Brad and Chase hit stereo crossbody blocks, and everyone was down. Doug nailed the Lariat of Love (rebound clothesline) and pinned Cruz! Doug and Brad hit a Business is Booming slam on Cruz. They got clippers and a razor and cut off Cruz’s long locks! He had a pretty significant amount of long hair, too! I stress, “had.” Doug and Brad hugged as we faded to black.

Final Thoughts: That show was a blast. I never doubted the babyfaces were winning, but that was a highly entertaining main event. As I noted, the crowd grew substantially in the second half of the show, and they were totally into that main event.

Alexa and Katch had a really sharp match for second place, and I really liked Price-Freeze for third. M-Gen vs. Waves & Curls earned honorable mention, and even though I’m a huge fan of the Miracle Generation, it was really nice to see an upset there. The reunion of the Church of Greatness was fun, and I love that 23 Hazard abandoned the scrawny kids.

I love the little things that you pick up when you are familiar with a product — like seeing TJ Crawford hit a Fire Thunder Driver to send a message to Bear Bronson. Bravo. No real complaints. Sal and Tiny Giant probably have a better rematch ahead, but it was fine.
