At that time I wished for AEW to never produce a tribute show like it again. In September of 2026, AEW produced three tribute shows – concluding last night with their tribute to Benjamin “Pac” Satterley. The last month of AEW TV has been defined by triumph and tragedy – as AEW came out of their biggest show of the year and immediately pivoted to honoring wrestlers taken from us far too soon in “The Butcher” Andy Williams and Benjamin “Pac” Satterley.

This genre of wrestling show is now one we can say AEW has elevated. It is a horrible honor for this promotion to know no one does tribute shows as well as they do. The heart, the emotion, and the true human pain – all rolled up into a wrestling show with performers honoring a fallen colleague and providing fans with the cathartic moments only live performance can bring.

Grief was still fresh on the faces and in the eyes of the wrestlers we saw on this show. Men and women we see as tough heroes every week offered us different glimpses of themselves here. From Excalibur’s words that opened the show, to the ten-bell salute, to the backstage remembrances, and the in-ring action, wrestlers, announcers, agents, and referees were seen openly crying. It is jarring, as a fan, to lose a wrestler so soon, but it hits home in a different way when you see the wrestlers you invite into your home weekly displaying uncontrolled emotion. Each time the camera lingered on another part of this crew crying, my heart broke again.

These shows do not just bring home a tragic situation to fans. If this were a two and a half hour exercise in sadness, no one would be able to handle it. This was not 150 minutes of wrestlers weeping. This is where Jon Moxley’s eerily prophetic words come into play. His quote that opened this piece was from a promo filmed after All Out – and before the death of Benjamin Satterley.

This was a eulogy for Benjamin Satterley that showed us, as fans, who this guy was. It was not a list of accomplishments Pac had from a long career in wrestling laid out before us. It was Benjamin’s friends and colleagues peeling back the layers of The Bastard character and allowing fans to see the man they knew and loved.

The moments of joy on this show were simply transcendent in a way only wrestling can be. Jon Moxley and Orange Cassidy – the wrestlers Pac had the most meaningful connections with in AEW – opened the wrestling portion of this show with a tribute to Pac’s lovely match against Orange Cassidy at AEW Revolution 2020. While it’s often cited as a breakout match for Cassidy, this match was a display of Pac’s command of every concept in wrestling. Pac was simply great on that night, and Cassidy and Moxley channeled it well.

Bryan Danielson’s surprise appearance was another heartbreaking moment of joy. Danielson has been an avatar for the fans’ passion for and emotional connection with wrestling for his entire career. Danielson and Moxley’s hug was beautiful and joyful and truly would have been enough if their story on this night had ended there.

The reuniting of The Elite, “Hangman” Adam Page, The Young Bucks, and Kenny Omega followed. All of these men had their careers touched by Pac in remarkable ways and made some beautiful magic with Pac in the ring in their time. Their match was a simple and fun sprint. Evil, in the form of The Don Callis Family, was defeated and our heroes could celebrate and cry together. Wrestling really is that simple and that good sometimes. The morality play works on nights like this one.

In another moment of true joy, two wrestlers inspired by Pac put on a match with so many tributes to him I couldn’t keep count. Ricochet and Will Ospreay – two of the only wrestlers in the world physically gifted enough to perform tributes to Pac’s athleticism – created something beautiful on AEW’s canvas. The story was not simply the match, but two men fighting through grief to create something special to honor Pac. It felt like each move and sequence meant something to them as they ran through many of the spots we saw Pac perform week in and week out. This match concluded with Ospreay performing Pac’s signature Black Arrow off of the top rope and seeming amazed that he had done so.

Marina Shafir, Pac’s sister in The Death Riders, gave us more of that joy through grief with her performance in the women’s trios tag match. Shafir was, in many ways, the addition that made The Death Riders work well as an act. She brought an attitude and aggression to the group that was missing before. Shafir wrestled this match as a pure babyface. Fans wanted to cheer for anyone associated with Pac, and they deserved that moment.

The last surprise of the night and the last burst of joy and grief together was once again from Bryan Danielson. We knew there would be a ten-man tag team match featuring The Death Riders. It was natural to assume that Moxley, not just a prophet but the ace of AEW, would pull double duty and wrestle again. The commentators played into that as Moxley took a position at the commentary table. Then Bryan Danielson’s music hit, and he marched to the ring in full gear, ready to wrestle for the first time since Wrestle Dream 2024. I found myself crying through Danielson’s entrance – a smile on my face the entire time – as he joined The Death Riders in a tribute to Pac.

On a night when grief hits the hardest and sadness can feel overwhelming, this was a wrestling show about joy. It strove to show us not just what Pac did, but the lovely human Benjamin Satterley was. His colleagues remembered him as the person who loved and cared for them backstage and let us share the joy of knowing that man. This show was an attempt, for themselves and for fans, to bring the joy of having known Benjamin Satterley to light. The loss feels profound, and even now as I type this, I am crying.

AEW has perfected the tribute show. Their efforts for Rebel (who is thankfully still with us and fighting ALS), “The Butcher” Andy Williams, and now for Pac were all deeply heartfelt and personal. The last month has given us some beautiful wrestling shows amidst tragedy. It has shone a profound light on what wrestling is and what it means to so many of us.

I hope we never see a show like this from AEW or any other promotion again. I have loved professional wrestling for over 30 years and remember what it was like to wake up and read about another new loss on what seemed like a weekly basis. Wrestling has given me some of the most transcendent moments of my life, transported in a crowd to a place in my mind only the thrill of performance and screaming fans can take me. I am forever grateful to the humans who give of their bodies to create this beautiful art.

May we remember Benjamin “Pac” Satterley not just as one of the best professional wrestlers of this era, which he easily was, but also as a man beloved by those who knew him. This was a eulogy for Benjamin Satterley that showed us who he was. It was beautiful and profound.

Will Pruett writes about wrestling and popular culture at prowrestling.net.
