The crowd was maybe 100; this is a second straight week it seems below-average. (NOTE: It once again grew substantially by the third match and got up to around 150. It’s amazing to me how many late arrivals they get here.) Referee Scott Robinson, Aaron Ortiz and Brother Greatness provided commentary.

* As of midday, just two matches were announced, so for me, this is a mystery show. ALSO, Beyond Wrestling is celebrating FIVE years of Wrestling Open tonight!

1. Erik ChaCha vs. Jose Zamora in a spotlight match. ChaCha hit some roundhouse kicks to the chest. Zamora — the kid with the camera around his neck so he can record his life 24/7 — took control. He hit a spinning heel kick to the jaw for a nearfall at 3:00. Erik hit some Yes Kicks and a DDT for the pin. That wrapped up suddenly. Erik is so talented, but his short stature is simply going to hold him back.

Erik ChaCha defeated Jose Zamora at 4:20.

2. Colton Charles and “Miracle Generation” Dustin Waller and Kylon King vs. Aaron Ortiz, Danny Miles, and Bobby Casale. Waller carried his title contract; Robinson explained that having that contract is allowing him to appear on the Thursday show. (He’s in theory now exclusive to Mondays, but that’s a decent loophole.) Miles and Casale wore their tag title belts they won here last week. Charles and Casale opened, but Dustin tagged himself in. (Uh-Oh! Trouble!) Bobby slammed Dustin and pushed him into the babyface corner.

Kylon threw Ortiz to the mat by his hair at 2:00. Ortiz flipped Kylon face-first to the mat for a nearfall. The heels began working over Ortiz, with Colton hitting a delayed vertical suplex at 3:30. Waller applied a headlock on the mat. Ortiz hit some chops on the larger Charles, who simply absorbed them. Casale got a hot tag at 6:00, and he hit several German Suplexes on Kylon, then a double German Suplex on both M-Gen! Nice! Casale and Colton traded forearm strikes.

Colton flipped Bobby into the corner, but Casale got up and hit some European Uppercuts and a modified Samoan Drop for a nearfall at 7:30. All six fought in the ring. M-Gen hit stereo kicks to Miles’ head. The babyfaces hit stereo Canadian Destroyers. Casale dove off the top turnbuckle onto everyone on the floor. Miles hit an Asai Moonsault! In the ring, Ortiz hit a top-rope flying Blockbuster on King and scored the pin. Really good energy.

Aaron Ortiz, Danny Miles, and Bobby Casale defeated Colton Charles, “Miracle Generation” Dustin Waller and Kylon King at 9:23.

3. “Handyman” Jake Gray vs. Buck Sawin. Again, Buck wore an unbuttoned flannel; he looks like a dirty Briscoe brother or WWF legend Skinner. Robinson again noted that Sawin “lives in the woods.” Gray hit a lengthy series of chops in the corner. Sawin stomped on him and hit a hard clothesline into the corner, then a snap suplex at 2:00. Sawin dominated nearly the entire match, but Gray hit the mid-ring Sliced Bread for the pin!

“Handyman” Jake Gray defeated Buck Sawin at 5:33.

* Jake Gray got on the mic. (His first in-ring promo here?) He said things haven’t always gone the way he wanted since he debuted, but he vowed that 2027 will be his year!

* Aaron Ortiz joined Robinson on commentary, replacing Brother Greatness.

* “Brick City” Julio Cruz and Victor Chase came to the ring. They got on the mic and demanded that Brad Hollister and Love, Doug come fight them … right now! The “Big Business” theme played… but two scrawny kids came out! This had a very “WWE vibe to it.” (How many times have we seen a heel call out a scrawny look-alike in WWE?)

4. “Brick City” Julio Cruz and Victor Chase vs. two unnamed kids. Brick City beat them up and covered both simultaneously for the pin. The commentary team had no idea who these two kids were, but they were dressed in the Big Business gear.

“Brick City” Julio Cruz and Victor Chase defeated two unnamed kids at 00:40.

* Brad Hollister came to the ring, holding a chair, and Brick City scampered away.

5. Peter Gianni vs. Don Freeze in a Discovery Gauntlet match. Again, Freeze is a bit rotund, but he flies around with great agility that you wouldn’t expect from him. Ortiz said he’s a big fan of Freeze. Don is larger, and he tossed Gianni around early on. He hit a springboard tornado DDT for a nearfall at 1:30. Gianni hit a standing neckbreaker. Don fired up and hit some chops, and Gianni fired back with his own chops. Freeze went for a second-rope moonsault, but Gianni kicked him in the face mid-move and got a nearfall at 4:30.

Freeze hit an enzuigiri, a shoulder tackle, and a Black Hole Slam for a nearfall. Don again missed a moonsault, but he landed on his feet and hit an STO uranage. He finally hit a moonsault for a believable nearfall at 6:00. Gianni flipped him off the turnbuckles to the mat, then hit “The Night Cap” (running knee to the sternum) for the pin. Good for the time given; I’ll give Freeze a “please come back!” chant.

Peter Gianni defeated Don Freeze at 6:42 to advance in the Discovery Gauntlet.

* They aired a cute segment with Bobby Casale and his girlfriend. When an off-screen interviewer asked who would win in a wrestling match, they both agreed she would win. I think she’s about to become involved in an angle…

6. Rickey Shane Page vs. Rain Conway. Ring vet RSP has become quite the gatekeeper whenever he appears here. Rain is a fun pest heel who has vastly improved this year. Standing switches early on, and they twisted each other’s left arms. Rickey knocked him down with a shoulder tackle at 2:00. Conway hit a Lungblower to the chest and got a nearfall. He stomped on Ricky and kept him grounded.

Ricky hit some chops, but he was tripped and crashed face-first into the middle turnbuckle. RSP put him across his shoulders and slammed him to the mat, then hit a Helluva Kick. He tossed Rain halfway across the ring at 6:00 and hit another Helluva Kick. RSP hit a Swanton Bomb for a nearfall. Rickey hit a spin kick to the back of the head for a nearfall at 7:30. Rain fired back with a big German Suplex and his own Helluva Kick, then a fisherman’s suplex for a nearfall. Rickey went for a Magistral Cradle, but Rain blocked it and got the pin!

Rain Conway defeated Rickey Shane Page at 8:24.

7. Bear Bronson and Liviyah vs. Kylie Alexa and TJ Crawford. Both the men’s and women’s champions are in this mixed tag! They took turns playing to the crowd before the bell. We finally got underway with the men in the ring, and TJ hit some roundhouse kicks to the chest. Bronson hit some chops. Kylie tagged in, so Bear tagged in Liviyah at 2:30. Kylie slapped her across the face, so Liv hit some clotheslines. Liv bodyslammed Alexa onto Crawford. Liv bodyslammed Bear onto TJ! (I didn’t think she could do that! Gabby does it, but Gabby is visibly stronger than Liv!)

Liv hit a flying shoulder tackle on Kylie. TJ got on the apron and grabbed Liv’s ankle, allowing Alexa to take control. Liv slammed her, and they were both down at 6:00. Bear got the hot tag, and he hit a series of clotheslines on TJ, who bumped like crazy on those blows. Bear brushed Kylie as he splashed TJ in the corner, then hit a powerslam for a nearfall on TJ. Kylie hit a Lungblower move to Bear’s chin! TJ picked up Bear and spun him to the mat. Liv hit a Missile Dropkick on TJ. Kylie hit a running neckbreaker on Liv! Bear and TJ hit stereo clotheslines at 8:30, and suddenly all four were down. Awesome sequence.

They briefly lost the signal. When we returned, Liv hit a scoop bodyslam on TJ. Kylie hit a neckbreaker over her knee on Liv. Bear came up behind Alexa and bumped into her, then he pulled down his straps. Alexa unloaded a series of forearm strikes! He just stood there and absorbed them. She charged, but Bear caught her and nailed a Black Hole Slam at 11:00. Bear hit a release Choke Bomb on TJ. TJ stomped on Bear’s head on the apron. However, Liv hit a German Suplex on TJ into the ring! Liv hit a Buckle Bomb on Kylie. TJ hit a vicious spin kick to Liv’s head! He pushed Kylie onto Liv, and she got the pin. Really good action.

Kylie Alexa and TJ Crawford defeated Bear Bronson and Liviyah at 12:32.

8. Devin Reno vs. Ichiban in a “best of one fall” match. The rules are: when a wrestler scores a pin, the other wrestler has ONE minute to either get a pinfall or throw their opponent over the top rope to the floor. The wrestler who scored the pin cannot roll to the floor in that minute. These two have had a really good series of matches, so it’s a good time to try something new with these unique stipulations. Ichiban immediately walked the top rope and hit an armdrag, then a dropkick. Ichiban slammed Reno’s head onto the top turnbuckle in each corner.

Ichiban hit a top-rope crossbody block, but Reno rolled through it and got a pin at 2:00 exactly. He only needs to hold on for one minute! However, Ichiban tossed him to the floor at 2:55, and the match continued. Ichiban hit a flip dive to the floor. In the ring, he hit a top-rope crossbody block for a nearfall. Reno hit a backbreaker over his knee for a nearfall at 4:30. Ichiban hit a superkick and a bulldog. Reno hit a Blue Thunder Bomb for the pin at 6:21. Ichiban rolled him up for a pin at 7:08. (Okay, Reno doesn’t need to get a pin now in the next 60 seconds. A bit odd.)

Ichiban hit a Poison Rana. He hit an enzuigiri. Reno hit a pop-up stunner for a nearfall at 8:30. Ichiban hit a 619. Reno hit a second-rope superplex, but Ichiban rolled him up for a pin at 9:41! Reno grabbed a chain, but the ref confiscated it. Ichiban immediately hit the Ichiban Kai (leaping Flatliner) for the pin. I have issues with this one, but I applaud trying something new.

Ichiban defeated Devin Reno at 11:05.

Final Thoughts: Some hits and misses tonight. First, the pluses: the mixed tag was really good, and I’ll again point out that at no time did a man punch a woman in the face. That just matters to me; I hate the visual of it. Again, there are ways to do intergender action (like here!) that don’t offend me, or ‘soccer moms’ who are bringing their pre-teen boys to the shows.

The M-Gen six-man tag to open the main show had really good action and takes second. Rain-Thatcher takes third, but I’ll again state that I hope Don Freeze earned a return visit here.

I have issues with pins early in a match where it’s not common to have a pin that quickly. Ichiban and Reno have had several matches now, and they’ve all gone 15-ish minutes. So, it’s just a bit absurd that Reno could actually pin Ichiban twice in under seven minutes. It just doesn’t make sense. It’s the same issue I have with most lucha best-of-three falls matches, or a gauntlet where someone is pinned after just three or four minutes, when that match would normally go 10 or more minutes. Again… I like the idea of trying something new, and the rules made sense to me… but I didn’t like the execution of the match.

I watched this live; it should be available on IWTV on Friday.

Listen to "Pro Wrestling Boom Podcast" on Spreaker.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[2345,2,11
4296,5992,5958,5991,4778,4897
post-197625","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-misc-ppv-reports","category-newsticker","category-ppv_reports","tag-bear-bronson","tag-devin-reno","tag-kylie-alexa","tag-liviyah","tag-tj-crawford","tag-wrestling-open

Wrestling Open "Episode 248 - Five Years Strong"
