They spoke a lot about their history in a way that longtime fans could appreciate while still being easy to follow for newer or more casual viewers. Omega was great during this segment. His fans could view his comments to Ospreay as confidence, while Ospreay fans surely view the same words as arrogance. Ospreay also played his part well by acting agitated by Omega&#8217;s comments while also showing good fire with his rebuttals. Omega&#8217;s closing line about Ospreay&#8217;s son having a new hero after he sees him was great. At this point in the show, Omega hadn&#8217;t completely crossed over into heel territory. He had a heelish edge going into a title defense against the home-country hero, and his most biting comments still could have been framed as gamesmanship. Unfortunately, there was more to come.<\/p>\n<p><b>Maya World vs. Kris Statlander vs. Persephone vs. Hikaru Shida in a four-way for the TBS Championship:<\/b> A solid four-way. I expected World to retain by beating one of the heels, so it was a pleasant surprise to see her get a credibility-building pinfall win over Statlander. World is doing a nice job in the ring, but she really needs more promo time. Fans took to the story of her continuing to compete despite the tragic loss of her brother in a car accident, but I don&#8217;t feel like we&#8217;ve learned enough about her since then.<\/p>\n<p><b>AEW Women\u2019s Champion Willow Nightingale and Mercedes Mone&#8217;s split-screen discussion moderated by Renee Paquette:<\/b> They showed good intensity during the verbal portion of the segment before agreeing to meet up for a fight. I&#8217;m not sure if it was by design, but Mone hitting Willow from behind and causing her to bump into the camera added to the impromptu approach they were going for. The fight that followed was effective because AEW hasn&#8217;t gone overboard on pull-apart brawls like WWE has. Speaking of going overboard, I&#8217;m still enjoying Mercedes&#8217; new and improved approach to promos, but she&#8217;s going to run the words &#8220;dumb bitch&#8221; into the ground. Sure, it gets a rise out of live crowds, but it&#8217;s going to become repetitive to weekly viewers if she doesn&#8217;t save it for when it counts.<\/p>\n<p><b>Jon Moxley vs. Jay White in a Continental Cup tournament quarterfinal match:<\/b> A nice match. It&#8217;s just a shame that it didn&#8217;t feel like a big showdown like their first two singles matches did because White hasn&#8217;t been positioned as a major player in AEW. The match was still entertaining despite the outcome feeling predictable.<\/p>\n<p><b>AEW National Champion Andrade vs. Jon Cruz:<\/b> You had to know that Andrade was going to come out, even after Cruz claimed that Andrade wasn&#8217;t in the building. How you know? Because it was obvious; that&#8217;s how. And that&#8217;s not a knock in this case, because being predictable isn&#8217;t always a negative. Cruz is smooth on the mic and made the fans want to see him get his ass kicked. I&#8217;d like to see Cruz used as a heel manager for some of the lucha talent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kyle Fletcher, Konosuke Takeshita, and Kazuchika Okada:<\/strong> Okada leaving Fletcher hanging while Takeshita got the better of him was simple and effective. I think most of us were sold on the three-way match before it was even officially announced, so they don&#8217;t need to do anything more than basic segments.<\/p>\n<p><b>Nigel McGuinness vs. Hechicero in a Continental Cup tournament quarterfinal match:<\/b> A soft Hit. I don&#8217;t know if it made the match feel more suspenseful, but McGuinness&#8217;s storyline ankle injury effectively put the spotlight on him. The match would have felt more suspenseful if McGuinness advancing to the finals to challenge for the Continental Championship in his home country didn&#8217;t seem like the obvious move, but that&#8217;s unavoidable.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>AEW Dynamite Misses<\/strong><\/span><\/p><div id=\"prowr-4140856115\" class=\"prowr-content-4 prowr-entity-placement\"><!-- Tag ID: prowrestling_incontent_2 -->\r\n<div align=\"center\" data-freestar-ad=\"__336x280 __336x280\" id=\"prowrestling_incontent_2\">\r\n  <script data-cfasync=\"false\" type=\"text\/javascript\">\r\n    freestar.config.enabled_slots.push({ placementName: \"prowrestling_incontent_2\", slotId: \"prowrestling_incontent_2\" });\r\n  <\/script>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p><b>Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson, and Nick Jackson vs. Mark Davis, Jake Doyle, and El Clon:<\/b> The match was fine as a glorified showcase for The Elite as they beat the Callis Family JV Team No. 1. That&#8217;s all it needed to be, and this was fine aside from being difficult to watch at times due to how much smoke was in the building. The Miss is for what happened afterward. A combination of the Don Callis Family JV Teams No. 2 and 3 came out and attacked the Elite trio. Adam Copeland and Christian Cage made the save, only for the Bucks to accidentally double superkick Christian. So far so good. Somehow, Omega was left alone in the ring, which led to Will Ospreay coming out to confront him. As much as I enjoyed their earlier segment, Omega turned into a campy mustache-twirling villain. Omega demanded that security remove Ospreay from the building. Shockingly, two security guards, who looked young enough to be carded in a bar or liquor store, were not enough to stop Ospreay. Omega put Ospreay through a table while acting like an over-the-top heel. This is the same Omega who was framed as a feel-good character when he won the AEW World Championship last month. Omega had the right tone during the earlier sit-down interview, but his full heel turn by the end of the show was forced, cartoonish, and unnecessary. By the way, this angle and the one with the Young Bucks accidentally superkicking Christian were big developments for major All In matches. So why were they saved for late in the ridiculous 34-minute overrun even though long overruns typically bring down the show&#8217;s rating and viewership average?<\/p>\n<p><b>Will Ospreay, Henare, and Francesco Akira vs. Brian Cage, Rocky Romero, and Lance Archer:<\/b> A minor Miss for a match that left me with mixed feelings. It was a questionable call to bring in Ospreay&#8217;s faction mates from New Japan Pro Wrestling just eleven days out from All In London. Yes, Henare and Akira are talented, and perhaps they&#8217;ll be on the All In London show. But the focus should have been on Ospreay before his Wembley Stadium main event, not on him teaming with two wrestlers (who most fans have limited exposure to) in a match against the Callis Family JV Team No. 2.<\/p>\n<p><i>(Jason Powell, founder and editor of ProWrestling.net, has covered pro wrestling full-time since 1997.
