WWE Raw Retro Coverage - June 6, 1994: Jeff Hardy makes his Raw Debut, Tatanka vs. Crush in a lengthy lumberjack match, Bam Bigelow and Razor Ramon in action
2015-06-08 11:20:44

By Haydn Gleed

WWF Raw on the USA Network
Taped in Struthers Fieldhouse in Youngstown, Ohio

The show opened without music, and showed Jeff Jarrett making his way to the ring to be a lumberjack in the King Of The Ring qualifying rematch from last week. Doink was shown being held back, trying to get to his tormentor. Hall Of Famers The Bushwhackers also made their entrance, while Vince McMahon welcomed us to Monday Night Raw. The opening video and music then played...

Retro Verdict:Phew, I thought I was going to go a week without hearing that god awful intro!

As we came back to the arena, IRS was making his entrance, and was met by Razor Ramon who attacked him. Vince's voice was at the point where his head was going to explode. Duke Droese made his entrance, with obvious canned cheers and all, at which point Vince introduced his co-commentator Randy Savage. Crush finally made his entrance and stared down the babyfaces. Tatanka charged to the ring once his music played and went after the heels...

1. Crush vs. Tatanka in a Lumberjack King Of The Ring qualifying match. Crush attacked Tatanka from behind to start the match, which caused both babyfaces and heels on the outside to enter the ring and attack each other. Things settled down quickly, with Crush beating on Tatanka in the corner.

Crush hiptossed Tatanka into the middle of the ring, but the native American made a brief comeback which was stopped by Crush who threw him out of the ring in front of the heels. After a couple of cheap shots, they threw him back in the ring for a close two count. Crush continued to beat on the back of Tatanka before dropping a knee on his face. This led into a chin lock of doom. The faces on the outside banged on the mat to try and get Tatanka going and he finally made his way to his feet but was knocked back down.

Crush went for a knee drop off the ropes, but Tatanka moved. Tatanka unloaded on chops and hit a Mexican arm drag followed by a standard arm drag. He hit a dropkick which knocked Crush to the outside near the babyfaces. They picked up the Hawaiian and threw him back in as we went to a commercial...

When we returned, Tatanka had Crush on the mat in an armbar. Tatanka held this hold on for a minute, until Crush got to his feet and hit a thrust into Tatanka's throat. Crush applied an armlock on the mat, with Macho Man talking about The King's Court later in the night. Randy I'm with you, my mind is drifting elsewhere. Crush held the armlock for another minute before picking up Tatanka and hitting a back breaker for a two count. Crush then applied another hold on the mat, again for over a minute...

Tatanka finally made his comeback and knocked Crush down with a big clothesline followed by an elbow. Crush came back with a reverse Atomic Drop and again applied an armlock on the mat.

Retro Verdict: I enjoy technical, working on one part of the body, but this is going over the top.

Vince and Macho Man talked about Lex Luger being in the building, which was an unnecessary comment to make. Tatanka made another brief comeback, which the heels on the outside cut off. Crush knocked him down, and again applied another hold on the mat for a minute. Macho Man pointed out the obvious that the ref was in the wrong position, but was promptly cut off by Vince, you know because we can't have logic. Tatanka made yet another comeback and hit an elbow off the ropes for a close two count as we went into another commercial break...

Back from the commercial, Tatanka beat Crush with kicks to the mid section, followed up by chops. Crush fell into the ropes who got his arms caught. The ref released him, and Crush came back with another reversed Atomic Drop. He went to the middle rope and brought his forearm into the chest of Tatanka. In an unintentional funny moment, Bam Bam pounded his hand into the mat twice and Tatanka kicked out thinking it was the ref counting. The problem was, the ref was no where near in position to count the pin. The announcers covered well for this.

Crush continued to beat down Tatanka, and applied a front facelock on the mat as the camera showed all the heels watching at ringside. Again, the babyfaces pounded the mat to get Tatanka going. It's also keeping me awake. Tatanka got to his feet but Crush hit a headbutt and threw Tatanka to the outside in front of Yokozuna. Yokozuna got some shots to the Native American, which caused all of the Lumberjacks to attack each other. Finally, things calmed down and Tatanka got back in the ring, but Crush only got a two count on the pin attempt. Crush went back to a front face lock.

Crush cut off another comeback from Tatanka with a rake to the eyes. Crush hit a strong looking suplex on Tatanka and then hit a legdrop, which Tatanka managed to kick out of. Tatanka managed to fall backwards and threw Crush to the outside by the babyfaces. They tried to throw him back in, but Crush started unloading on all babyfaces, making them look increadibly weak. This caused Lex Luger to come out and hit the loaded elbow on Crush who was thrown back in the ring. Tatanka started to crawl over to Crush and got the 1-2-3. All the babyfaces jumped in the ring to celebrate with Tatanka...

Tatanka beat Crush to qualify for the King Of The Ring in 23:43 (including commercials).

Retro Verdict: Urgh, that was awful. Firstly the match itself was just plain boring. I praised the match they had on the show before as being better than it should have been, but this was just bad. Again, I don't mind focusing and working on one body part, but this was just constant cut off the comeback and go back to a mat hold. The lumberjacks on the outside were your typical WWF/E lumberjacks who were trying to get the spotlight for themselves so were distracting during the match. Crush managing to beat down the 10 babyfaces on the outside after wrestling for 20 minutes was unrealistic and made the faces look weak, and Lex's appearance, although logical from a storyline standpoint (Crush caused Lex to be counted out in his KOTR qualifying match), just made the rest of the face roster look pathetic. It didn't help that I was expecting the run in after Vince and Randy for no reason, started talking about Lex being in the building. All round bad.

After a commercial, Bam Bam Bigelow made his entrance with Luna Vachon, his sacrificial lamb this week was John Paul...

2. Bam Bam Bigelow vs. John Paul. Both men circled each other, Paul gained an early advantage with a headlock, and even managed to move to miss a diving headbutt, but was knocked back to the mat in quick order. Vince and Macho Man made jokes about The Flintstones, you know because Bam Bam has the same name as a character in the show. They also laughed at the thought that Hilary Clinton could be president...

Bam Bam finished off John Paul with a strange splash off the ropes...

Bam Bam Bigelow beat John Paul in 2:31.

Retro Verdict: Just your typical Bam Bam squash match. I understand the point of the squash matches is to build somebody up, so why did they feel the need to continuously have Bam Bam be the roster guy in there with a jobber. To me it makes more sense to have spread it out, let other people get over, but there we go.

A video showed of the D-Day Challenge, which was an event on the 50th Anniversary of D-Day. The armed forces took on the WWF superstars in a tug of war, which the superstars won...

Retro Verdict: Not only did the WWF bury the armed forces, we also had babyfaces and heels clearly shown together celebrating their victory. Kayfabe was dead long before we realised brother.

After another break, The Kings Court was setup in the ring. Jerry Lawler heeled up on the crowd etc etc. He said at King Of The Ring, he will be facing a guy from Scotland, and mocked Roddy Piper for wearing a dress. He said only a true king would have the guts to have that individual as a guest on his show. He said his guest this week is from Scotland, has a t-shirt with Hot Rod written on it and wears a dress. Roddy Piper's music played and came a skinny guy who waved at the crowd. Randy said Roddy has lost a lot of weight. Vince exclaimed that's not Roddy Piper....no shit!

The imposter did a terrible impression of Roddy Piper which became really annoying very very quickly. Jerry mocked him some more and asked him about the kilt, but the imposter said it's a skirt. Jerry asked what's under the kilt and the imposter said nothing, to which Jerry said that's what I heard. What I found unintentional funny was in the background you can see a lot of people heading to the concourse area. The imposter said it's only these airheads that want me to fight you, and got on his knees and said he wants to back out right now. He started to do the "we are not worthy" motion and then kissed his feet, before crawling out of the ring.

Retro Verdict: That was terrible on so many levels. Please make this show end!

After a commercial break, Razor Ramon was walked down the aisle. His opponent, already in the ring, was Keith Davis....

Retro Verdict: Hang on, that looks like Jeff Hardy!!

3. Razor Ramon vs. Keith Davis. Davis ducked a clothesline but got caught attempting a crossbody. Razor flipped him over his head, and applied an abdominal stretch.

Davis literally had no offense, and instead got beaten for the full four minutes. The babyface Razor kept trash talking to him and arrogantly standing over him. He finished the young kid with The Razor's Edge...

Razor Ramon beat Ketih Davis in 4:02.

Retro Verdict: I just got completely distracted by trying to work out if that was Jeff Hardy, and following some research online, this was certainly the debut of Jeff. Well I guess it makes sense considering this was the same tapings as Matt's Raw squash debut. Anyway, he made Razor look amazing with the selling of the spots, but again it was a nothing squash match at the end of the day.

Paul Bearer was standing in a dark room with one spotlight somewhere backstage. They had clearly smeared vaseline on the camera to give the promo some kind of effect. He addressed Ted Dibiase and said he had heard everything he claimed over the last couple of weeks about buying my Undertaker, and although he admits the trail has gone cold will he be bought? Nooooooooooo I don't think so, noooooo.

In the last segment of this god awful Raw, Ted DiBiase claimed that next week he would produce The Undertaker......just when Raw couldn't get worse, we have the fake Undertaker angle coming up....

Retro Verdict: This was quite possible the worst hour of a wrestling show I have ever watched. The nearly half hour match between Tatanka against Crush was terrible, less than one star if you want a star rating, and the nonsense around the ring just weakened the already joke of a babyface roster. The Kings Court segment with the imposter Roddy Piper couldn't have been worse and the two squash matches were nothing special, apart from the debut of Jeff Hardy, which obviously at the time no one knew would be a significant moment in the future.

Avoid this Raw on the network, unless you enjoy watching car crashes. With the fake Undertaker angle coming up, things are only about to get much much worse....
