Undertaker's 25 years as the Conscience of WWE recalled by Jim Ross
WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross wrote a FOX Sports piece on the career of Mark "Undertaker" Calaway, who will celebrate 25 years with WWE on Sunday at Survivor Series. "I referred to The Undertaker persona as the 'Conscience of WWE,' which had a double meaning, one based in fact and one based in fiction," Ross wrote.
"The fact was that Mark Calaway was the locker-room leader in WWE and has assumed that role for a quarter-century. That feat will likely never be duplicated, because we can't be sure the next generation of talents, or people in general, will be trusting and put aspects of major decisions in the hands of well-meaning veterans. Some in WWE creative never fully understood the "Conscience of WWE" moniker, and I was asked to disregard that descriptor, which I reluctantly did. I still think that it's more applicable today than before." Read the full feature at Foxsports.com.
Powell's POV: If you think the writers not understanding the "Conscience of WWE" monicker, wait until you read Ross recall how a WCW booker stated that Calaway "would never draw a dime." Everyone is celebrating the in-ring career of Taker and rightfully so, but Ross looks more at his role behind the scenes as the locker room leader. A highly recommended piece.
