Gutteridge's ROH TV Review: Matt Sydal (Evan Bourne) returns to face AJ Styles, Mark Briscoe vs. Caprice Coleman, and Nigel McGuinness has a face to face with Tommaso Ciampa
2014-11-03 16:49:39

By Darren Gutteridge

Ring of Honor TV
Taped September 27, 2014 in Wheeling, West Virginia
Aired October 27, 2014 on the ROH website

Before titles, Matt Sydal (Evan Bourne) was shown backstage. He said it was his pleasure to come back to ROH. He said he had been adrift in the sea of wrestling, but now he had found a platform, where he could speak from the heart instead of the head. He referred to his opponent, AJ Styles, as the best wrestler in the world, but tonight he wasn't facing Styles, but "fear itself." He said he would show that he has been "reborn" in his match tonight...

Gutt Reaction: Matt Sydal, the walking definition of a million dollar wrestler with a 10 cent promo. Now the awkward part is over, the match should be fantastic.

After titles, Kevin Kelly and his "one night only" commentary partner Truth Martini welcomed us to the show as Mark Briscoe entered to new music. Kelly played up the war between the Kingdom and the Briscoes. Weirdly, Briscoes opponent is ... Caprice Coleman? Odd...

1. Mark Briscoe vs. Caprice Coleman. Kelly pointed out that both men are ordained ministers. Early on, Coleman hit his one inch punch on the outside. Briscoe took a second to sell the gimmick, but Coleman made up for the stupidity of the move with a sweet springboard moonsault. Briscoe soon returned the favour with his goofy "Red Neck Kung-Fu".

They worked a brisk pace, with Coleman scoring the first close two count following his triple rolling Northern Light suplexes. Kelly said that Briscoe wanted to hold the TV Title "more than anything", but Truth laughed off the threat Briscoe posed to his client Jay Lethal. Both men started trading blows until Briscoe dropped Coleman with a back suplex. He followed up with an Inverted Death Valley Driver, and got the win ...

Mark Briscoe defeated Caprice Coleman in 7:06.

Kelly said that Nigel McGuinness's face to face meeting with Tommaso Ciampa is up next...

Gutt Reaction: An effective time filler. They were fighting a tired crowd and an air of unimportance, but these two veteran worked a quick enough pace to keep me watching. The finish was kind of abrupt, and came when I was still wheeling from Kelly's insinuation that Briscoe would rather hold the TV Title than the ROH Title.

When we returned, McGuinness was shown stood in the ring, and he invited Ciampa to the ring. Ciampa actually got a fair few chants during his entrance. McGuinnes clarified that Ciampa had been suspended because of his unprovoked attack on Bobby Cruise and Kevin Kelly. He said while he hasn't forgotten that, he accepts that Ciampa has apologised, and had reacted while dealing with a ROH Title match loss. With that in mind, McGuinnes said he would reinstate Ciampa next week, but with a zero tolerance policy – if he touched a member of staff, he would be fired.

Ciampa said he was glad for the peaceful resolution, as that was "all he wanted". Ciampa then implied that he was expecting an ROH Title on his first week back, but McGuinness said he would be starting from the bottom. Ciampa moaned that he had been working his way up from the bottom for five years, so now he was simply going to dictate his career path to McGuinness. When McGuinness stood firm, Ciampa said that while 2008 Nigel McGuinness could understand him, he couldn't understand how 2012 Nigel McGuinness just "quit".

Before McGuinness could retort, Jay Briscoe came down to the ring. He got in Ciampa's face and said he didn't like the level of disrespect he was showing McGuinness. Ciampa wound Briscoe up by insinuating that Briscoe had been "protected" during his two year undefeated streak, as he hadn't wrestled him. Briscoe said they could go right now, but things descended into a brawl.

As Ciampa left through the crowd under instruction from McGuinness, the Kingdom attacked Briscoe in the ring. Bennett, Cole and Taven gave Briscoe a triple superkick before roughing up Mark Briscoe as he ran out to make the save. They then gave Mark Briscoe a Doomsday Device, before Cole and Taven repeated "Thy Kingdom Come" and threw up the Four Horseman sign...

Gutt Reaction: "Shouty shouty shout shout" pretty much sums that up. Lots of wrestling logic was flying around there. McGuinness essentially forgave unprovoked assault on untrained staff because Ciampa was a little annoyed after losing a match. The exchange with Briscoe was also a little unpolished, a problem you encounter when both men rely more on passion and shouting than silky smooth exchanges when they get the mic.

BJ Whitmer was shown talking to Adam Page backstage. He said that Page had been learning from the Decade for the past six months, and tonight he has an opportunity to put it all into practice when the pair team together...

Kelly recapped the Ciampa segment before Brutal Burgers came out for tag team action. The Decade, sans Roderick Strong, followed...

2. The Decade vs. Brutal Burgers. Jimmy Jacobs joined commentary, and said the Decade were fine despite their squabbles. The Decade isolated Cheeseburger until he managed to sneak around Page and tag Brutal Bob. Bob started to roll, and he and Cheesburger hit the Supersized Stunner (Cheeseburger jumps on Bobs back and the pair drop at the same time to hit a stunner).

Page kicked out, and Whitmer got in to eliminate Bob. Page got aggressive with forearm smashes before putting Cheeseburger away with a cool Tombstone variation, where he put Cheeseburger in the Alabama Slam position before dropping to his knees...

The Decade defeated Brutal Burgers in 4:18.

After the match, Page picked up Cheeseburger, and dropped him with the Tombstone variation again. Whitmer praised him as Bob pulled Cheeseburger out of the ring...

Gutt Reaction: No no, we were on route to the Decade break up, don't show cohesion! I worry they may be doing damage to Page too. He looks like a babyface, so pushing him as a heel seems counter intuitive, but to push him as a sadistic one may mean he has no hope of "redemption", at least not for a while. If he turns on The Decade next week, fans will still have this attack tonight fresh in their memory.

Backstage, Mark Briscoe said "Welcome, citizens" as spooky music played. He talked about Halloween, and mentioned that kids wear masks. This brought the Romantic Touch in, who called himself the greatest man to ever wear a mask. This in turn brought in Delirious, who babbled. They all wished us a happy Halloween...

Gutt Reaction: Did Delirious, ROH booker, seriously write a throwaway Halloween segment just so he could appear in it? Also, when was the last time he wrestled on TV? I've certainly never seen him.

Matt Sydal received a big pop for his entrance, and a loud "Welcome back" chant. AJ Styles received a similarly loud pop...

3. Matt Sydal vs. AJ Styles. Both men have ridiculous hair. It needed saying. Not bad hair necessarily, but "out there". The pair went through a lot of sweet chain wrestling --> stand-off sequences before the final commercial ...

Things started getting springboardy when we returned, with AJ taking control with a springboard forearm. Kelly announced The Briscoes vs. Bennett and Taven for next week as Sydal got back into things with a leg drop. He really started rolling with a springboard head scissors, but got cut off as he set up for a springboard move. Styles switched gears to power moves, earning a two count off of a wheelbarrow facebuster.

Every Sydal comeback was cut off until he managed to hit his flying double knees. He set up for a superplex, only for Styles to set up a Styles Clash. Sydal escaped and caught him with a roundhouse to set up the Shooting Star Press. He let fly, but AJ rolled out of the way. Styles picked up his broken body, dropped him with the Hollow Point piledriver before finishing the job with the Styles Clash...

AJ Styles defeated Matt Sydal in 12:47.

AJ left sharply, but Truth followed Sydal up the ramp, and seemed to be talking to him. This brought ROH TV to a close. .

Gutt Reaction: Not the match I was expecting. Actually, it's better that this wasn't your typical PPV quality ROH TV main event. That's not meant as a slight, as this was a great TV main event. But it certainly felt like they didn't go 100% on Sydal's first match back. Look at it logically though – neither guy is under full-time contract, so why wouldn't you utilise them when you can? If they only have this match, it was good! But if you can book them on a PPV, they haven't blown their load for free. Smart booking choice.

The middle section kind of lagged after a solid if unspectacular open, but the main event was worth the wait. The only true negative I have is Truth Martini, who was AWFUL on commentary. I'm not even a Truth hater, he was just incredibly bland in his calls. Seek out the main event, but otherwise spend your time elsewhere...

Like the WWE Network now that it's finally here in the UK! Wait, they delayed it again? Um, sign up to ROH for the year. RIGHT NOW.
