AWA legend Verne Gagne dead at age 89
Verne Gagne died on Monday at age 89. Longtime AWA and WWE personality Gene Okerlund confirmed the news via his Twitter page. "Sad to hear my longtime friend Verne Gagne has passed today," Okerlund wrote. "To me their was never anybody quite like him. May you rest in peace."
Powell's POV: Gagne was a legendary wrestler and the longtime owner/promoter of the AWA promotion. Gagne has suffered with Alzheimer's disease in recent years. He made news in 2009 when his health care facility roommate died following an altercation between the two, though Gagne was not charged because he was battling dementia. Gagne moved in with his daughter Beth and her husband following the incident. He was able to appear publicly after the fact, as he signed autographs along with his son Greg Gagne at a showing of "The Wrestler" film in the Twin Cities a few years ago.
