2/16 Powell's WWE Raw Live Coverage: No Way Out fallout, Melina vs. Beth Phoenix for the WWE Women's Title, Rey Mysterio vs. Mike Knox
2009-02-16 22:00:26

WWE Raw on the USA Network
Live from Spokane, Wash.

[Q1] Lillian Garcia introduced Smackdown general manager Vickie Guerrero, who walked onto the stage to boos. She introduced new World Hvt. Champion Edge, who joined her on the stage. They walked hand in hand to the ring as Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler introduced the show. Cole said viewers should not adjust their television set. He said Edge is a Smackdown wrestler who is also the World Hvt. Champion.

Once in the ring, Edge said the "R" in Rated R Superstar stands for remarkable. "Even better, resplendent, or really, really smart," he said. Edge said he could have headed home after losing the WWE Title, but that's not him. He said he took matters into his own hands. Edge said the fans were calling him a loser, but they were all wrong.

Edge went to ringside and pointed at various fans while saying, "You were wrong." He stopped at a small fan and said, "You know what, little fella, when you grow up you're gonna be wrong." Hilarious. Edge returned to the ring to continue his rant. He said Jesus turned water into wine, whereas he just turned the WWE Title into the World Hvt. Championship.

Vickie explained that Stephanie McMahon accompanied Shane McMahon to the hospital, leaving her the highest ranking official left in the building. She said that when Kofi Kingston was unable to compete, she decided that no one was more deserving than Edge to fill his spot. Vickie said that after meeting with the board of directors, she can officially say that Edge is the new champion.

The fans booed. "Excuse me," Vickie said three times. She said the fans may not like that Edge is champion, but each and every one of them will have to accept it. Edge and Vickie made out in the ring as the crowd booed. John Cena's music interrupted their make out session and he joined them in the ring.

Cena thanked the fans and then congratulated Edge. "You did it," Cena said. "Nobody thought you could have pulled it off, but you did it." Cena said a lot of superstars would come and protest the decision, but he wasn't going to do that. He said Edge managed to get in the match and then won fair and square. "I can't say I exactly like it, but I am out here to say congratulations to your new World Heavyweight Champion."

Cena ran through a list of things that the R in Rated R Superstar stands for. He ended the list with "rematch." The fans cheered. Edge reminded Cena that he competed in two different Elimination Chamber matches. "Nobody has ever done that, so I'm not competing tonight," Edge said. He said he may not compete for another month.

"If you want to see me and my lovely wife Vickie Guerrero, we'll be on Smackdown," Edge said. Cena said that was cool because he doesn't want Edge to have any excuses. He said he has a rematch. Edge said he forgot about the Cena wit and how cute he is. Edge recapped their history, including the time he slapped Cena's father. "Good times, John, good times," he said.

[Q2] Edge said Cena can talk all he wants about a rematch, "but that doesn't change the fact that the champ is here," Edge added. Edge waved his hands in front of his face in Cena style and then started to walk past him. Cena spun him around and said: "You try to run, I'll catch you. You try to hide and I'll find you. We're gonna fight and I'm gonna hurt you." Edge and Vickie left the ring as the announcers explained how Edge captured the title...

Powell's POV: Strong segment. Edge was great and Vickie had unbelievable heat. Cena came across well and I like the way they worked in that he wasn't protesting like some superstars would. Really good intensity at the end. This looks like a WrestleMania 25 match to me.

Backstage, Shane McMahon said he wanted to meet Randy Orton in the ring. He said he didn't want any referees, rules, Rhodes, or DiBiase. "One way or another, this ends tonight," he said... [C]

Powell's POV: Nice to see that Shane has regained consciousness.

A WrestleMania video aired...

1. William Regal (w/Layla), Cody Rhodes, and Ted DiBiase defeated C.M. Punk and Cryme Tyme in 8:00. Punk hit the GTS on Cody early, but one of the other heels stepped in and prevented him from getting the pin. They cut to commercial roughly a minute into the match. [C] Lawler said Punk and Cryme Tyme dominated throughout most of the break, but momentum changed right before they returned.

[Q3] The heels took turns working over Punk until he finally made the hot tag to JTG. A short time later, DiBiase hit his finisher, which is now called the Dream Streak, for the win...

Backstage, Stephanie McMahon asked Shane if he's crazy. She said she was with him at the hospital last night and he didn't even know his own name. He said Orton is just as hurt as he is. She said he's not thinking clearly. "This fight happens tonight whether Orton wants to or not," Shane said... A No Way Out replay commercial aired... [C]

Powell's POV: I assume Shane didn't take the punt kick at the pay-per-view because he's going to take it tonight instead.

After the break, the announcers hyped the WWE Women's Title match...

Lillian Garcia introduced Chris Jericho, who was already standing in the ring. He said the Academy Awards are on Sunday, and he implored voters not to vote for Mickey Rourke because it could have a horrible affect on the wrestling business. He said it will cause all the delusional loser legends to hang on longer. He continued to rip the fans and the legends until bagpipe music interrupted him.

Roddy Piper walked to the ring and received a good reaction from the live crowd. Piper entered the ring and said he was going to shoot with Jericho. "Let me tell you something, man, I have watched you your entire career," Piper said. "And I like you. I'll tell you why. You said what was on your mind and then you had the guts to come in the ring and back it up. I respected that. It reminded me of somebody I know. What happened?"

Piper said Jericho gets on television and runs his mouth. He said Jericho calls out him, Flair, and the other legends. "You used to be entertaining," Piper said. "What happened? You're judging us. You're patronizing. You're telling us what we should be and what we should not be doing. Let me take one of your quotes - Please, shut the hell up."

Jericho told Piper to dance like a puppet on a string and make the fans cheer for him. "I'm not finished yet," Piper yelled. Piper said Mickey Rourke is his friend. "And, yeah, I cried," he continued. Piper said the movie isn't about a bunch of old timers who want another run. He said it's about the respect they have for everyone. It's about the physical and emotional pain. "And most of all, why we do what we do - for the thrill of performing." Piper said Flair was right. "We live for this!"

[Q4] Piper said people come up to him and say they remember him slapping Mr. T. He said other people come up and recall watching wrestling with their grandfathers as he shaved Adrian Adonis's head. Piper said these moments should be cherished and celebrated.

"I have one hip and I hurt all the time," Piper said. "But as long as these folks here say so, I will crawl down here on my hands and knees to give them one more memorable moment because old school's cool." Jericho looked at the ground. Suddenly, he kicked Piper's leg and beat him down. "You want respect?" Jericho yelled without a mic. "Crawl." Jericho left the ring and smirked as he walked to the back...

Powell's POV: Piper's best mic work in years. He spoke slowly and stayed focussed. Awesome. I enjoyed Piper's promo more than Ric Flair's last week.

Backstage, Todd Grisham interviewed Randy Orton, who said he has no problem fighting Shane. He said the implication that he needs DiBiase and Rhodes bothers him. He said that if Shane wants this fight to end when someone isn't moving, "Well, I can make that happen"... [C]

Powell's POV: Great final line from Orton. Normally I would complain about the lack of wrestling in the first hour, but this show has been filled with great mic work.

A WrestleMania Moments feature showcased WrestleMania 9...

2. Kane defeated Jamie Noble in 0:15. Before the match, Noble said the day after No Way Out is the kickoff to WrestleMania. He said he's never been in Money in the Bank or danced with Liberace, but he won't fumble if he gets his chance. He mentioned Chavo Guerrero losing last year in nine seconds. Kane came out and squashed him, just as he did Chavo last year.

At ringside, the announcers recapped the All or Nothing match between Shawn MIchaels and JBL... A shot aired of JBL walking backstage with a black eye. The announces said he asked for mic time to make what he called a historic announcement...

[Q5] [C] JBL's limo pulled into the arena. He exited the limo and walked to the ring. JBL said HBK won the match and gained his financial security last night, but he couldn't care less. He said he hired HBK to help him win the World Hvt. Title so that he could return to Texas as a conquering hero. He said his goals are much greater now.

"I have a date to do something historic at WrestleMania," he said. He said he is going to do something that no one else has ever done, which is end the streak of the Undertaker. "My date with destiny is to go to WrestleMania and defeat the Undertaker and when I do you will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am the greatest wrestler of all..."

Shawn Michaels's entrance music interrupted JBL. HBK performed his standard entrance routine. "He's back!" Lawler shouted. Shawn entered the ring and said he also had an epiphany last night. "I can't spell it, but I had an epiphany too," he said. Funny. He said he's no longer JBL's employee. He's once again the headliner, the show stopper, and Mr. WrestleMania.

Michaels recalled Taker telling him that sometimes it's hell trying to get to heaven. He said he was right. He said he feels great and ran through a long list of WrestleMania accomplishments. Shawn said that if anyone should face Taker on the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania, it should be him.

JBL said that beating Taker at WrestleMania is his destiny, not Shawn's. "In case you have forgotten, you can't tell me what to do anymore," Michaels said. Shawn challenged JBL to face him in a match next week for the first to challenge Taker at WrestleMania. "I accept," a smiling JBL responded. Shawn responded, "It looks like you and me are doing business one more time."

Shawn said this time will be different while poking JBL in the chest repeatedly. "This time when you push me, I'll push back," he said. Shawn said he'll face Taker at WrestleMania, and JBL will be lucky to even get there. Shawn started to walk away and then approached JBL, poked him some more, and said, "Don't you just hate when people do that?"...

Powell's POV: Solid segment. Michaels was back to his usual fun loving self. I guess this means we won't be seeing Taker vs. Hunter at WrestleMania 25, which leads me to believe it will be Hunter vs. Orton.

A video recapped the history between Shane McMahon and Randy Orton...

[Q6] [C] Another WrestleMania commercial aired...

3. Rey Mysterio defeated Mike Knox in 9:45. Cole said that Mysterio is weary because he has competed for over an hour if you combine his Rumble match and Elimination Chamber performances. Ric Flair is rolling his eyes somewhere right now. Good action in the first minute with Rey ducking a clothesline and a big boot as he ran the ropes, but the third time was the charm for Knox, who creamed Rey with a clothesline. [C]

Knox continued to rough up Rey after the break. He hit a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for a nearfall and then expressed disbelief when Rey kicked out of his pin attempt. Knox remained on offense for the next couple minutes, but Rey came back with his usual flashy offense. Rey hit the 619 and went for the West Coast Pop, but Knox avoided it and then caught Rey springboarding off the ropes. Knox tied Rey in the tree of woe and kicked him. Knox went for a shoulder block, but Rey sat up in the corner. Rey rolled up Knox and scored the pin...

Powell's POV: The announcers pointed out that Knox dominated the entire match, but Rey managed to pull out a win somehow. Rey gets the win, but Knox doesn't look bad. Well done.

[Q7] Backstage, Beth Phoenix told Santino Marella and Rosa Mendez to pay attention because it's an important night for her. She vowed to regain the WWE Women's Championship... [C] Did you know over 100 million photos of the WWE Divas were viewed on the WWE website last month?...

Powell's POV: Last month? Man, there are some horny WWE fans out there.

4. Melina pinned Beth Phoenix (w/Santino Marella, Rosa Mendez) to retain the WWE Women's Title in 2:50. The announcers noted that Santino had highlights in his hair and was no longer sporting the unibrow. Early in the match, Beth tossed Melina to ringside, where Rosa put the boots to her. Kelly Kelly, Mickie James, and Candice Michelle came out and roughed up Santino and Rosa. Meanwhile, Melina rolled up Beth for the pin.

Powell's POV: Santino had a makeover at the WWE house show in Los Angeles over the weekend, according to the Dot Net correspondent who covered the show. I guess that's where the new look was born.

A video officially named the Funk Brothers as the newest WWE Hall of Fame inductees... Cole and Lawler announced that Dusty Rhodes will be presenting the Funks...

[Q8] [C] The main event of tomorrow night's ECW on Sci-Fi show is Christian and Finlay vs. Mark Henry and Jack Swagger... The announcers plugged the WWE website and recapped the Edge and John Cena angle for earlier in the show... A video recapped the Edge and Cena angle...

Backstage, Steph told an unidentified caller that she tried to talk Shane out of fighting Orton. She told the person to get there was fast as he/she could. "Where are you?" she asked. "Hello? Hello?" She slammed the phone down on the couch inside her office... [C]

Powell's POV: Triple H?

Shane McMahon made his entrance. He came out wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Orton came out next wearing his usual ring gear. They fought at ringside and Shane quickly took control of the fight. Good lord. Shane knocked Orton over the guardrail and fought him in the crowd as the announcers reminded viewers that it was an unsanctioned fight.

Eventually, Orton took control of the fight and dumped Shane back over the guardrail. Orton punched and kicked Shane repeatedly at ringside. Orton rolled Shane back inside the ring and knocked him around. Orton punched Shane and knocked him out of the ring. This is more like it!

Unfortunately, Shane made a big comeback out of nowhere by charging at Orton and knocking him over the announcers' desk. Shane picked up the ring bell and slammed it over Orton's head. Shane rolled Orton inside the ring and set him up in the corner. Shane slammed the bell into his head again. Shane set up a chair in front of Orton's face and set up for the Van Terminator (Coast to Coast, yeah, yeah, yeah). Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes ran out and attacked Shane before he could perform the move.

"No one man could fight three," Lawler said, as if he hasn't been watching the show lately. Orton slowly made it to his feet. He flashed his sidekicks a crazed look and delivered the big punt kick to Orton's head. NFL legend Bucky Scribner would be proud.

Stephanie McMahon ran out and knelt over Shane. A trainer joined Steph in the ring. Orton eyed up the situation and slowly walked toward Shane with the crazed look in his eyes. Orton leaned down and looked at Shane while the EMTs put a collar around Shane's neck. Steph stood up and pleaded with Orton, who responded by giving her the RKO. The announcers laid out.

Orton held his hand over his mouth and acted surprised by his own actions as Cody and Ted also looked on with surprise. Triple H ran out wearing street clothes with no music playing. Legacy scurried at the sight of Hunter, who tended to his wife. Hunter looked up and flashed the meanest and nastiest look of his career in Orton's direction. Hunter stood up and continued to stare down Orton while huffing and puffing as the show went off the air...

Powell's POV: Good angle to close the show. Yes, Shane getting the better of Orton was absurd, but the kicked looked great and the RKO on Steph was awesome. It looks like Hunter vs. Orton at WrestleMania 25. I'll have more to say about this show and the WrestleMania 25 lineup in the Dot Net Member Exclusive Audio recap.
