11/23 Powell's WWE Survivor Series Kickoff Show coverage: Bad News Barrett and Fandango return, Paul Heyman joins the pre-show panel
2014-11-23 18:00:59

The following is live coverage of the WWE Survivor Series Kickoff show that aired on WWE Network. If you are reading this live, refresh the page for the latest updates.

WWE Survivor Series Kickoff show
Aired live on WWE Network and social media
St. Louis, Missouri at Scottrade Center

Renee Young, Booker T, Alex Riley, and special guest Paul Heyman were served as the panel. Heyman spoke about why he believes Team Authority will win the main event. Booker T babbled while the regular broadcast team made their entrances. Riley asked Heyman if he's been contacted about being the new authority figure. Heyman changed the subject to weather talk.

Tom Phillips checked in from the social media lounge. He spoke about some odd poll involving which member of the roster has the best survival instincts... Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, and JBL checked in on commentary...

With Justin Gabriel in the ring, Lilian Garcia introduced Fandango and noted that he was accompanied by Rosa Mendes. Rosa stood on the ring apron and then entered the ring and danced. Fandango came out and danced with her while Latin music played...

1. Fandango (w/Rosa Mendes) vs. Justin Gabriel. Fandango hit a late clothesline and followed up with a top rope leg drop for the win...

Fandano pinned Justin Gabriel in 3:20.

Powell's POV: The "new and improved" Fandango is a salsa dancer. New and improved my ass. It's too bad because Johnny Curtis has talent. It's also too bad he's risking a poor quality of life after wrestling by continuing to perform that top rope leg drop as a finisher.

The Miz delivered a promo backstage while Mizdow mouthed along. Miz said it's a very important night for The Miz brand. He added that because Mizdow is an extension of him, a victory for them would be a victory for The Miz... The panel spoke about the promo...

Bad News Barrett made his entrance and walked up to his podium. Barrett was cheered as he spoke about making his return and feeling the excitement in the air. Barrett said everything is on the line in the main event. He said Triple H said he would fire every member of Team Cena other than John Cena.

"I'm afraid I've got some bad news for you..." Barrett said before adding that The Authority will make Cena's life hell. Barrett delivered the line again and directed it at The Authority. Barrett said it would become the era of Bad News Barrett...

Powell's POV: Lawler acted surprised and seemed surprised that Barrett "thought" he would be the new authority figure. In other words, it didn't seem like an official announcement of Barrett being the new authority figure. By the way, Barrett was ambiguous in terms of the babyface/heel dynamic. He said things that drew cheers and boos and I'm actually happy they didn't set his course on the Kickoff show.

Backstage, Byron Saxton interviewed A.J. Lee, who mocked the idea of the Bella family drama being compelling. She said this is Survivor Series and the time for playing dress-up is finished. "Playtime's over," she concluded... Paul Heyman spoke at length about the ramifications of the main event...

Cesaro headed to the ring and spoke about how the Swiss stay neutral. He mentioned the main event and said you could figure out where the Swiss stand. He announced his personal support for Team Authority and was booed, then he said "long live The Authority" in different languages until he was interrupted by Jack Swagger's music...

Powell's POV: This is the same Jack Swagger who was on Team Cena until he was too injured to compete. He also worked a match on WWE Main Event on Wednesday. Good lord, at least try to pay attention to your own storylines, WWE.

2. Cesaro vs. Jack Swagger (w/Zeb Colter). Before the match, Zeb cut a promo accusing Cesaro of brown-nosing. The broadcast team at least acknowledged that Swagger was scheduled to be on Team Cena and mentioned his injury kept him out, which doesn't really hold water since he wrestled the night after the team was filled. Swagger applied the Patriot Lock early in the match.

Swagger performed a nice German suplex at 4:20 and followed up with another suplex that got the crowd behind him. Swagger went for a Swagger Bomb. Cesaro put his feet up, but Swagger landed on his feet and went for the Patriot Lock again, Cesaro twisted out of it and came back with a suplex of his own. He went for another, but Swagger slid between his legs and applied the Patriot Lock for the win...

Jack Swagger defeated Cesaro in 5:40.

Backstage, Vince McMahon exited a limo and was cheered...

Powell's POV: Team Cena should have stuck with Swagger. After all, he beat Cesaro in nearly a third of the time that Ryback did on Monday. A good television match with a surprising outcome only because of how competitive they made Cesaro look on Raw.

This concludes our Kickoff show coverage. Go to the main page for my Survivor Series live review.
