10/07 WWE NXT Takeover Respect live review: Bayley vs. Sasha Banks in an Iron Man match for the NXT Women's Championship, finals and semifinals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Tournament, Apollo Crews vs. Tyler Breeze, Asuka vs. Dana Brooke

By Jason Powell

WWE NXT Takeover: Respect
Winter Park, Florida at Full Sail University

A video package opened the show and then Rich Brennan provided the live introduction. Brennan was joined on commentary by Corey Graves and Byron Saxton, and the trio checked in during the entrances for the opening match...

1. Finn Bálor and Samoa Joe vs. Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder in a Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic semifinal match. Dawson and Wilder targeted the left knee of Balor, who eventually made the hot tag. Joe performed his signature offensive spots on Wilder. Joe tagged Balor and then hit the Muscle Buster on Wilder. Balor followed up with the Coup de Grace for the win. After the match, Joe asked Balor off-mic about his leg, and Balor assured him he was okay...

Finn Bálor and Samoa Joe defeated Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder in 8:45 to advance to the finals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

Powell's POV: I thought this match might be Balor and Joe steamrolling their opponents. I'm happy they protected Dawson and Wilder as much as they could and even more happy that they told a story via Balor's knee injury.

A video package showcased NXT's involvement at the Louder Than Life Festival. Find reports on both shows from Dot Net reader Ben Shearin in our WWE Live Events section...

2. Jason Jordan and Chad Gable vs. Baron Corbin and Rhyno in a Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic semifinal match. Rhyno dominated Gable for the first couple minutes. Gable came back, but he ended up at ringside and Corbin worked him over. Gable eventually avoided a Rhyno splash, and made the hot tag to Jordan.

A short time later, Gable and Corbin were the legal men and Gable performed a nice German suplex into a bridge for a nice near fall. Rhyno gored Jordan and they rolled to ringside. Corbin ended up hitting End of Days on Gable and pinning him, which disappointed the live crowd...

Baron Corbin and Rhyno beat Jason Jordan and Chad Gable in 10:15 to advance to the finals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

Powell's POV: A good match with the winners dominating the majority of the match to the point that I thought Jordan and Gable were going to come back and win.

Kevin Nash was shown sitting in the crowd... An Asuka video was shown...

3. Asuka vs. Dana Brooke (w/Emma). Graves referred to the Asuka signing as the highest profile signing ever for the women's division. Asuka worked the arm early on. They went to ringside and Brooke got back in the ring first and jawed at the referee. Meanwhile, Emma interfered just enough to let Brooke go on the offensive.

Askuka caught Brooke in an arm bar, but gave up the hold and threw a nice kick at her. Emma climbed onto the ring apron and was knocked off by Asuka, who followed up with a kick to Brooke and eventually locked in the Asuka Lock chicken wing submission hold for the win. After the match, Asuka blasted Brooke with another kick an then played to the crowd. She went to ringside and approached Emma, who just turned her head in fear...

Asuka beat Dana Brooke via submission in 5:25.

Powell's POV: A strong debut for Asuka. The post-match bit with Emma was unexpected, as I assume they will go to that match next. And they probably still will, but now the heel fears the babyface, which is unique if nothing else. I am already looking forward to the eventual Bayley vs. Asuka match.

Backstage, a trainer examined Balor's knee. Balor showed that he was in pain as a stressed out Joe stood by... A Nia Jax video package aired and hyped her for "next week"...

4. Apollo Crews vs. Tyler Breeze. Crews performed a nice standing vertical suplex early on. A short time later, Breeze tugged at the knee brace of Crews and then kicked him in the face before knocking him to ringside. Breeze ran Crews into the ring apron and then rolled him back inside the ring and covered him for two.

At 5:00, Breeze applied a Sharpshooter. Crews teased tapping before reaching the ropes. At 7:40, Crews flipped over the ropes and over Breeze. Crews sold a knee injury, and Breeze blasted him with a kick that led to a near fall. At 8:25, Crews caught Breeze leaping off the top rope and power slammed him for two.

Crews press slammed Breeze and went for a standing moonsault, but Breeze grabbed his leg. Crews fought free and performed the move. Breeze got his knees up and got another near fall off a small package. Crews came back with a kick to the face of the charging Breeze. Crews followed with a powerbomb and got the win...

Apollo Crews defeated Tyler Breeze in 8:50.

Powell's POV: Another good match. The Breeze near falls were well done, but the live crowd didn't seem to buy into them, presumably because they were confident that Crews was going over. I thought we might see a kickout by Breeze to keep the match going, so the finish caught me by surprise.

Hideo Itami and Funaki were shown sitting in the crowd together... A WrestleMania weekend travel package video aired... A shot aired of Bayley getting ready for her match backstage... The broadcast team narrated highlights of the tag tournament matches... A Dusty Rhodes sound effect played with him saying let's get down and dirty and get on with it, baby...

5. Finn Bálor and Samoa Joe vs. Rhyno and Baron Corbin in the finals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Eden Stiles was the ring announcer. Balor was out last and had a slight limp as he made a standard entrance without any of his usual theatrics. Balor threw an early dropkick a Corbin and tagged in Joe while the broadcast team noted that he was working on one leg.

Joe ended up taking some punishment and made a hot tag to Balor, who leaped over the top rope to reenter the match. At 7:00, Rhyno took a shot at Balor's knee from the floor. Legal man Corbin wrenched Balor's leg around the ring post three times. Balor fought out of the corner at 8:20, but Corbin slammed him form a two count.

Balor caught Corbin with a sling blade clothesline and tagged in Joe, who got the better of both heels. However, Rhyno caught Joe with a gore and went for a pin that Balor broke up at 10:15. Balor clotheslined Corbin to ringside and kicked him from the apron, then Rhyno knocked Balor to the floor. Rhyno set up for a gore, but Joe kicked him. Joe hit the Muscle Buster and Balor tagged in. Balor hit the Coup de Grace on Rhyno and pinned him...

Finn Bálor and Samoa Joe beat Rhyno and Baron Corbin to win the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

After the match, the Rhodes family entered the ring and presented Joe and Balor with the trophy. Cody Rhodes took the mic and recalled his father's hero John Wayne saying there are some things a man can't run from. Cody said we can't run from what happened to Dusty, but we can remember and respect. Cody said someone referred to Dusty as the oak of NXT, and he referred to him as dad. Cody said the fans took Dusty into their homes and hearts, and made him a part of their families. "Let me make it official, tonight we are all Rhodes," Cody concluded. Dusty's WWE theme song played as Balor and Joe stood with the family and eventually raised the trophy while the crowd chanted "Thank you, Dusty"...

Powell's POV: Classy words from Cody. It's odd to see him break character at this point, but I am just fine with it given the circumstances. A good tournament final. Balor went in and out of selling the knee and it was not as much of a factor as I expected it to be. There was a ton of speculation that the Balor and Joe team would have a meltdown that would lead to one of the other team winning the tournament. With the Rhodes family in attendance, it was wise to go with the feel good finish and the feel good post match celebration. However, it will be interesting to see where they go at the television taping tomorrow.

A Brock Lesnar "Go To Hell" tour video aired... Stephanie McMahon, Charlotte, Becky Lynch, and Charlotte were shown in the front row... A video package set up the main event...

6. Bayley vs. Sasha Banks in a 30-minute Iron Man match for the NXT Women's Championship. The fans chanted for Bayley after the introductions and her parents were shown in the crowd. The bell rang and the women had a long staredown and circled one another as the crowd chanted "this is awesome." Both women went for early pinfalls.

There was a scary spot with Bayley going for a deep arm drag and Sasha landing on her head. Sasha got right back into the match. A short time later, Bayley helped Sasha up from the corner and they hugged, then Sasha pulled her down from behind by her hair and covered her for two. A short time later, Sasha was bickering with the referee. Bayley charged and Sasha moved. Bayley stopped short of hitting the referee in the corner and dodged a charging Sasha, who then shielded the referee, poked Bayley in the eye, and rolled her up and pinned her at 8:40 to go up 1-0.

Ten minutes into the match, Sasha went for the double knees in the corner, but Bayley caught her and dropped her on the top rope. At 11:00, Bayley performed the Belly to Bayley to even up the falls at 1-1. Sasha took control and they went to ringside. Banks took Bayley to the stage and ran her into the screen. Sasha returned to the ring and Byley was counted out to make it 2-1 Banks. A young female fan in a Bayley shirt was shown crying in her father's arms.

At 17:25, Sasha grabbed Bayley by the legs and pulled her to the middle of the ring and set up for a move, but Bayley countered into a pin to even up the falls 2-2. A young female fan was shown jumping up and down at ringside.

They fought to ringside with 7:00 remaining. Bayley ended up running onto the ring steps and onto Sasha. Moments later, Sasha kicked Bayley into those ring steps. Sasha went for a suicide dive, but Bayley caught her and performed a Bayley To Belly on the floor, which drew "holy shit" chants. Bayley rolled her back inside and covered her for a two count.

With 4:10 remaining, Bayley sat Sasha on the top rope, but Sasha punched her twice and eventually knocked her down. Bayley ran back up to the send rope and hit the Bayley to Belly off the second rope and went for the pin, but Sasha's foot hit the rope as she was being covered, so the ref stopped his count. Cool spot.

With 2:40 remaining, Bayley put Sasha on the middle rope and performed a reverse huracanrana. She turned around and Sasha performed a belly to belly suplex of her own for a two count. Sasha applied the Bank Statement with 1:50 remaining. Graves noted that Sasha didn't have a full grip on Bayley, who reached for the ropes. Bayley rolled her over and had her pinned for a second, but Sasha rolled her over and reapplied the hold. Graves once again noted that she couldn't get the full grip.

Bayley fought her way out and slammed Sasha's hand into the mat. With 20 seconds remaining, Bayley applied an arm bar and then kicked her head. The referee signified that Sasha submitted with just two seconds left.

Bayley defeated Sasha Banks in a 30-minute Iron Man match 3-2.

After the match, Triple H and William Regal came out with flowers. Regal gave flowers to Sasha at ringside as she was embraced by Sara Del Rey. Bayley applauded from inside the ring. Triple H hugged Bayley and gave her flowers. They hugged. Bayley got emotional. Triple H raised her hand and all of the wrestlers were shown applauding her from inside the studio. The fans chanted "you deserve it and she held up the title and the flowers.

Powell's POV: That was tremendous. Just great back and forth wrestling with tremendous drama and a great mix of wrestling, brawling, and submissions. It was so cool to see the shots of the young girls in the crowd either being worried for Bayley or celebrating when things went her way. Bayley is going to be a mega star on the main roster and will bring in a new demographic if they don't blow it creatively. Everything about her is just sensational. Overall, this was another very good show with my favorite NXT live special main event yet. Thanks for watching along with me tonight. Zack Zimmerman will be by on Thursday with his NXT Hit List, and I'll be back later tonight with a member exclusive audio review.
