3/27 Dot Net One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indy wrestling
Mar 27, 2014 - 05:00 PM |
Welcome to the Dot Net One Shot. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).
WWE
Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): I feel like Vince McMahon made a bet with someone that he could get over 60 people on a WrestleMania card and this year's show is built completely around proving it. I'm all about the morale boost a spot at WrestleMania brings, but this show seems like it will be half "get everyone on the card" matches and half quality well-built stories. I miss the days when one battle royal on the pre-show was enough.
Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): Lame sexual innuendo, long winded heel Triple H promos, unexplained cameras in bathrooms, and Hulk Hogan mispronouncing things. What year is it again?
Zack Zimmerman (Twitter - @InVasionZim): As much heat as there is heading into Daniel Bryan vs. Triple H, I just sit back and wonder what the hell happened in the build to Lesnar vs. Taker. It's not like they are unaware of how to make the streak feel jeopardized, they just haven't done a single thing to make it so. I'm still optimistic about the quality of matches the show will produce, but the build sure has been hit-or-miss.
Darren Gutteridge (Twitter - @Dazatheg): When HBK looked capable of ending the streak, Taker got serious. When HHH declared war on him, Taker got serious. When Punk got personal, Taker got serious. Now here comes Brock Lesnar, who you could make the case for being the biggest physical threat Taker's ever faced, and he's messing around with caskets, druids and teleportation. They had the formula down perfectly, why regress to this silliness?
Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): My enthusiasm for WrestleMania waxes and wanes every week. I can't be the only one that this is happening to, and I think it says a lot about WWE's faith in the Network to deliver viewers. Right now, the best reason, though not the only reason, I can give you to get WrestleMania 30 is the $10 price tag. I take this is just an aberration and not indicative of how PPVs will be handled going forward.
TNA
Jake Barnett: MVP is a man with a plan. He wears tailored suits, put together a cabal of investors, and wrestled away operational authority in TNA away from its longtime owner Dixie Carter. It’s all very impressive, considering he’s incompetent. I’m just saying, I probably could have found a way to keep Abyss from interfering in the main event last week that didn’t involve handcuffing myself to him at ringside.
Chris Shore: Last week TNA had a good first hour of TV and then fell apart. Here's hoping they can put together two solid hours of TV. We have seen them do it in the past, but it has been too long.
Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)
Will Pruett (WWE Network Pick): Let's go back to just after WWE's name change (Get the F out!) and watch a match from July 2002! WWE Vengeance was headlined by a triple threat match between Kurt Angle, The Rock, and The Undertaker. The three men had an amazing match that would become the blueprint for big match triple threats in the future. Check it out.
Jake Barnett (Daniel Bryan): We better get one hell of a promo from Daniel Bryan next week. On balance is has been pretty smart on WWE’s part to have Triple H do the majority of the talking in this feud, but Bryan has to inspire people next Monday. Fans have waited way too long for a serious and motivated Daniel Bryan to tell off Triple H and Stephanie, and next week will be his last chance to sell fans on watching what will likely be the most emotional and satisfying night of his entire career.
Zack Zimmerman (NXT): NXT has left me and several people in my inner-circle rather underwhelmed. The months leading up to Arrival (excluding the Cesaro-Zayn build) felt like everything was in a holding pattern until the Network run. However three weeks into the Network run, it's already slowed back down. I expect this week to step it up with a very good title match in the main event, I just hope "business picks up" across the whole program sooner than later.
Jeff Lutz (Ultimate Warrior): I continue to be baffled by those who say Ultimate Warrior doesn't belong in the WWE Hall of Fame. If the criteria for induction was particularly strict, these people might have an argument. But once Koko B. Ware went in, the chances for a "small Hall" were out the window. I can't find a WWE Champion who doesn't belong in (OK, maybe The Miz), and if there was even one, Warrior wouldn't be it.
Darren Gutteridge (NXT): Another try-out day is likely to increase the number of "students" at the Performance Center, and you have to wonder what their upper capacity is. The place is huge, but if they have too many people there, how can each person get the teaching they need? Hopefully the surplus will be solved with main roster transfers for longtime NXT guys, which in turn will lead to more NXT debuts, something the program needs at this point.
Chris Shore (Wrestling): It's WrestleMania season and in almost all of the past 10 years this has been the time of year that I most look forward to. It was WrestleMania that brought me back into the fold of active wrestling fan, and it was the WrestleMania shows that solidified my newfound love for ROH at the time. Yet across the board I am mostly indifferent about everything going on in wrestling. I don't hate it, but nothing sets me on fire right now. Daniel Bryan's storyline is doing most of the heavy lifting, with Bray Wyatt picking up from there. Outside of those two though, I mostly shrug my shoulders. Won't someone inspire me and others to once again be ravenous for their product?
