3/13 Wednesday One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indy wrestling
Mar 13, 2014 - 03:25 PM

Welcome to the Wednesday One Shot. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): Monday was all about giving the vocal fans what they have wanted. The next three weeks will be about creating doubt in these same fans minds about a Daniel Bryan win. People will say Bryan is getting buried (because they always do), but rest assured, WWE loves a happy ending at WrestleMania (aside from 'Manias 9, 16, and 17).

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): I'm happy to see Daniel Bryan get his shot at greatness at WrestleMania. The rest of the story has me a little worried right now. I hope they don't head down the path of politics or class warfare, because one is divisive and the other is sleepy time tea boring.

Zack Zimmerman (Twitter - @InVasionZim): Whatever fans may think about the corporate feel to the angle or the group of people chosen to represent Daniel Bryan on Monday, there can be no complaints about the way this has turned out. It's what the fans have demanded and it appears like the company is solidly positioning Bryan as the top babyface. My concern is that the company's reluctance may surface in his post-WrestleMania push, but it doesn't pay to worry about that now when we can enjoy what's happening presently.

Darren Gutteridge (Twitter - @Dazatheg): The 30 man Andre the Giant battle royal is a neat idea, but I do feel it has to carry something like a title shot along with it to get everyone invested. It would be too similar to the MITB contract if it was an "Any place, any time" type deal, but something where the guy gets a shot on a specific PPV (Extreme Rules for example) could work.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): The, potential, addition of Daniel Bryan to the WWE Championship match at WrestleMania creates an obvious story of Bryan beating Triple H and winning the title after that. We can all see it coming. So let me say this as plainly as possible: so what? This is the story that needs to be told. I hope and pray they don’t try and get cute because of the obvious nature of the story. This IS the story to be told.

TNA

Will Pruett: How many times will TNA repeat the mistakes of the past? Even if they can justify every move they made at Lockdown, they presented two lame finishes in two main events. People had to pay around $50 to see those lame finishes. My faith in TNA delivering a good pay-per-view is drastically low after Sunday.

Jake Barnett: I watched Lockdown hoping for clean finishes and a new direction for TNA. Reinforcing old stereotypes was the last thing I wanted to see. I found myself laughing at things that weren't meant to be funny, but it was only to keep from crying.

Chris Shore: Coming out of Lockdown, TNA has a ton of work to do to fix some giant plot holes. Bully Ray’s babyface turn is a real head scratcher, but I trust him to explain it. Abyss’s heel turn is another story. Their champion still looks like a complete fluke. Their Knockouts division is weak (but some hope with the “debuting” Brittany). And they have a new X Division champion that not everyone knows about. Like I said, a ton of work.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (Total Divas): The best wrestling (related) show on television is coming back this Sunday night and I am pretty psyched about it. You can scoff all you want, but Total Divas presents the women of WWE in a (mostly) good light. It has heroes and villains. It is a great form of wrestling promotion. Now, if only WWE would allow the good storytelling to carry over into their main female programs.

Jake Barnett (ROH): I hope ROH goes all out and shoots in HD and brings a better set with them for these New Japan hybrid shows. There is a real opportunity to showcase some things American fans have been missing that I think everyone will enjoy. If you have to squint to see it on your screen, I think it's a failure no matter how top notch the actual work in the ring is.

Zack Zimmerman (NXT): NXT has come out strong on the WWE Network. They wasted no time getting back to the Neville vs. Dallas title feud and they're showcasing two future NXT Title contenders in Sami Zayn and Corey Graves. The women have remained prevalent and the mid-card is taking shape with exciting new characters like Adam Rose. Full Sail is hosting another set of tapings tonight (3/13) for the NXT's airing beginning April 4 so I'm looking forward to seeing how they finish up Zayn vs. Graves and where Neville's next title challenge comes from. I'll have the spoilers up tonight in addition to my weekly NXT live coverage.

Darren Gutteridge (NXT): I'm really curious to see the follow up to Adam Rose's debut in tonights NXT. The match caused quite a splash last week, but as far as I know, they only have one more match of his in the can (from the aborted January tapings). Plug that here and film vignettes for coming weeks, or let the situation play out as intended? It's an unexpected big call.

Chris Shore (ROH): The ROH deal with New Japan is going to provide many American fans with the opportunity to see the always impressive NJPW talent. How much that helps ROH or NJPW going forward remains to be seen, but it sure won’t hurt based on the talent that is coming over.
