WWE Smackdown Hits
Bray Wyatt: How good is Bray Wyatt? Good enough to convince me that his act is actually capable of making the main event. His promos, his actions, his absolute belief in his character continues to make him the single most compelling person in all of wrestling TV, regardless of company. In the process, he's giving guys like Luke Harper and Eric Rowan a huge launching pad to stardom in their own right. Harper made the most of it here. Rowan will have his opportunities as well. Bray Wyatt can be a once in a generation star if this trend continues and they don't screw it up at WrestleMania.
Dolph Ziggler vs. Damien Sandow: Even though Michael Cole's lack of credibility didn't get Ziggler over at the end, this was still a good match, and one I would like to see mean something down the road. Ziggler and Sandow are two of the guys I am very high one, both of them winning me over after mediocre debuts, and I thought at one time WWE was high on them. They haven't been booked that way, but when they are allowed to entertain us, they do a bang up job, just like they did here.
WWE Smackdown Misses
Kane and the Outlaws beat up the Shield: How unappealing was this? The booking theory was sound: have the heels do what the babyfaces do in the gang beat down. The problem was Corporate Kane and the Old Age Outlaws. They aren't compelling! Kane looks like a stooge now. The Outlaws look like, and wrestle like, they need Geritol. These are the guys who beat down the "Hounds of Justice?" These are the guys who are too tough for the Shield? Get the **** out of here! After everything we saw the past few months, I can’t believe this is the best they can find for The Shield for WrestleMania.
Fernando vs. Fandango: What's worse than the Los Matadores tag team? Only one of the Los Matadores! Then, to have that one guy go over Fandango, a guy WWE has invested a lot in, makes zero sense. I think Jake Barnett was right in audio when he said someone saw Summer Rae in that red dress and thought, "Hey, we have a bull!" There's a whole other miss in someone seeing Summer Rae in that dress and thinking about a midget in a bull costume, but we'll save that for another article.
MizTV: Awkward and clumsy, MizTV didn’t even reach its normally low heights on this show. Having all those guys make entrances like that made the heels look dopey. Sheamus looked like a one trick pony calling for the fight. Then the brawl wasn't much of a brawl. Then Michael Cole tried to convince us there was a match by pointing out that Miz was "never eliminated." What a disaster of a segment.
Total Divas "commercial:" It is bad enough that WWE doesn't take the Divas serious except in the Total Divas universe. It's virtually unforgivable to have a match on Smackdown three weeks before WrestleMania serve as a commercial for that show. Summer Rae and Natalya teaming up? What? I don't mind crossover on the shows to a degree, but this was forced and poorly done. Nattie's campy kick to the ass of Summer Rae didn’t help matters either.
