Shore's Weekend Promo: SummerSlam weekend, Mark Henry, ROH TV tapings, and some rare love for NXT Aug 14, 2011 - 05:12 PM
In the spirit of my beloved WCW Saturday Night, welcome to the Shore Weekend Promo. Every week I will mention, the good, the bad, the ugly, and whatever else I want to talk about across all of wrestling.
Opening Series(My overall thoughts on the week): It's SummerSlam weekend, and despite WWE's best efforts, this does not feel like the second biggest show of the year. Sure, there are some hot angles going in. And there's even a musical guest. But the show itself feels like just another PPV. There's no sense of any of these matches being some sort of epic confrontation like we usually get at WrestleMania. Maybe they don't want comparisons to Mania and that's why they did things this way, and I still expect a very good show. But this show should feel be bigger than it does.
Pops(The best of the week):
- Mark Henry continues to be the delight of the summer with his new heel character. His intensity is perfect, and his mic work has been well above par. This Friday, his interaction with Johnny Curtis was the best moment of an otherwise lousy show. When you mix this with the surprise babyface success of Sheamus, you have the makings of a feud that could set a new bar for big men feuds. This, more than any other, is the match I most want to see at SummerSlam.
Heat(The worst of the week):
- Last week was a good week for wrestling. This week…not so much. Heath Slater was accused of assaulting a woman during WrestleMania weekend, TNA held a dreadful PPV, Raw ratings dropped, and Smackdown stunk. Granted some of those are worse than others, but it was tough to come off such a good week to walk into a shit storm. By Friday night, it was almost impossible to be upbeat about anything. Here's hoping SummerSlam turns things around.
- Congratulations should be in order to ROH for taping their first shows of the Sinclair era. But our correspondents were very frustrated by the long delays between taping sets. I'm not sure if this was just bad luck, or indicative of poor planning on ROH's part. Whatever it was, it is not an auspicious start to the Sinclair era.
- But of particular importance to me is how they handle the title change at the TV tapings. There is an iPPV that will air before the show with the title change airs. I have been critical in the past of ROH changing titles and then holding other events with the new champion being seen for weeks before they show the title change on TV. See Christopher Daniels run as TV champ to see what I mean. There's a way they can handle that to make it work. But if ROH wants to have any success outside of their faithful fans, they have to do a better job of synchronizing title changes with when we see the results of that change.

Go Home(The Big Finish, Whatever I Want):
While there may not have been a lot to be excited about this week, the surprise of the week was on the shitty NXT show. Justin Gabriel debuted his new babyface look/gimmick (not that there was much of a change) against Tyson Kidd. The resulting match was unbelievably good, and well worth the watch. The match is not in a standalone video, but it starts around the 9:00 part in this video.
