Shore's Weekend Promo: TNA is terrible and Jim Cornette says so, Smackdown saves the week, too much Jersey Shore, and Victory Road earns a special honor Mar 21, 2011 - 12:05 PM
In the spirit of my beloved WCW Saturday Night, welcome to the Shore Weekend Promo. Every week I will mention, the good, the bad, the ugly, and whatever else I want to talk about across all of wrestling.
This article normally runs on Saturdays but was delayed to Monday this week due to scheduling issues. I hope you enjoy the article and will look for it next Saturday when it returns to its normal day.
Opening Series(My overall thoughts on the week):
Has this been the strangest week in wrestling in while? I believe it has. We started with Jeff Hardy vs. Sting on Sunday, progressed to Snooki on Monday, struggled through Impact and found out Superstars was canceled on Thursday (broken by yours truly), and then finished with a good Smackdown show on Friday. Some very good and some downright terrible. Like I said, strangest week in a while. Let's break it down.
Pops(The best of the week):
-It was so nice to have a return of wrestling on Smackdown after Raw and Impact cave us a combined total of 37 seconds (in a row) across both shows. OK, it wasn't that bad. But I do grow weary of all the talk. Raw is at least trying to build to WrestleMania 27. Impact has no such excuse. But Michael Hayes rode to the rescue this week and gave us eight matches. Not all of them were great, but at least they were there. And some of them were very, very good.
-Many thanks to WWE for putting their most recent documentaries on Netflix. As a fan and Netflix subscriber, this allows me to watch these specials because there is no way my wife is letting me plunk down the cash for all of these. I haven't watched any yet, but I will be this week, and am highly looking forward to it.
-I have to admit it, I marked out just a little for The Mock—what WWE called Miz's impersonation of the Rock. The camera angle when he came out, along with his spot on walk, had me thinking it was Rocky until they zoomed in. A lot of people say he isn't there yet, but I think Miz is a main event star right now and will only get bigger and brighter as he goes forward. Plus, watching him destroy John Cena every week just warms my heart.
Heat(The worst of the week):
-I'm going to try and wrap up all my distaste for TNA this week in one shot, but it won't be easy. There's the Jeff Hardy debacle at Victory Road which as far as I know has still not been addressed by Dixie Carter to the boys. There's Hardy's court date that has be continued again to 4/20, proving the universe has a great sense of humor. And of course there was this week's Impact that nearly cost Jason Powell his life when I contemplated flying to Minnesota to kill him after making me cover so he could go find a leprechaun in the bottom of a glass.
Bashing TNA is the vogue thing to do on the IWC, and I will be the first to admit that sometimes I can go too far. But I hear very little in the way of defense of TNA this week and for good reason. This is a company in trouble. They may last forever because Dixie is a daddy's girl and can convince him to fund it in perpetuity, but that doesn't mean they aren't dead in the water. They have created a huge whole and have yet to learn the first rule of saving yourself, stop digging.
-Congratulations to Eddie Edwards on becoming the ROH champion this week. I like Eddie and hope he has a good run. But I do not like the title change. Just the night before, Roderick Strong defeated three other men in a "Defy or Deny" match that stipulated those three men would not be allowed to challenge for the title as long as Strong held the belt if he won. By then turning around and dropping the belt the next night, ROH completely devalued that stipulation as those three guys only had to do without a title shot for 24 hrs. That kind of booking is what gets you in trouble, and with TNA doing its best to commit suicide, ROH needs to avoid mistakes like this to be ready to assume the number two spot when it becomes available.
-Every time I hear the Jersey Shore theme I want to kill myself, and hearing it on wrestling shows actually makes me get up off the couch and look for my gun. I understand the desire to seem hip and relevant, and I applaud WWE for at least getting Snooki instead of some lower rung "star," but I just don't want to see it. It may not be a bad move for the company, but it's certainly a bad move for this watcher. And it's my promo, so hey.
Tweet This(Best Tweets from "The Boys"):
Steve Corino:Awkward moments: Peeing next a guy & he lets out a little "toot" fart. More awkward when I look over & say to him "Nice".
Chris Jericho: Piers Morgan could be Wade Barrett's dad. And Gordon Ramsey could be mine...
Jim Cornette: Just watched #TNA ...I have to come up with a new face. (If you don't get this joke, be sure to watch the video below)
Colt Cabana: Apparently Bret Hart has changed his twitter name. Thinking about taking his old twitter handle for sharts and gigs.
Obligatory Iron Sheik Tweet: today my birthday. i am the man. you dont know me, i make you humble. (Not much from Sheiky Baby this week)
Don't forget you can follow me on Twitter @the_shore_slant
Go Home(The Big Finish, Whatever I Want):
How bad was TNA Victory Road? How about it got its own episode of Botchamania! For those who have never seen Botchamania, it's a funny look at when spots go wrong in pro wrestling. It's sometimes NSFW for language so be sure you're watching this somewhere where you won't get in trouble. I also recommend you go back and watch other Botchamanias as they are genuinely funny, if a little weird. Enjoy. (Video Link)
