Pruett’s Pause: TNA Impact Wrestling – Kurt Angle’s first night as TNA Champion, Mr. Anderson thrown out of Immortal, the X Division gets a weight limit
Aug 12, 2011 - 02:30 PM

By Will Pruett

- What was the point of putting Mr. Anderson in Immortal in the first place? Was it to turn him babyface after he never actually turned heel? What is the point of his character at the moment? He isn’t likeable and the fans aren’t into him.

- Acknowledging agents on TV is interesting. What purpose do they play in the storyline world where matches are not planned ahead of time? Why would you call them agents and not just legends?

- All of Immortal seems a little bit angry at Abyss. If he is turning babyface, let’s hope it is for more than just a rivalry with Bischoff and/or to continue his alliance with Hulk Hogan.

- Madison Rayne has improved a lot in the ring, but her match with Mickie James was too short to really mean anything. I’d love to see the Knockouts get time to have meaningful matches, but that is a challenge when they have so much going on in one show.

- Kurt Angle needs to have his shirts tailored. They are far too big for him and it looks like the champion does not have money for custom clothing, which all champions should be able to afford.

- Speaking of bad clothing, Brian Kendrick should personally push for TNA’s seamstress to be fired for putting him in those awful M.C. Hammer pants.

- The second match of the night seemed to get in the way just like the first match did, Robbie E tries hard with his TV time, but the gimmick is far too much of a joke to mean anything. Will this be how Zack Ryder ends up being treated or will WWE give him an edge?

- I don’t care about Devon and The Pope’s rivalry. I don’t believe the rest of the viewing audience does either.

- Robbie E and Cookie breaking up was an awful segment. Why does TNA feel the need to degrade women constantly?

- Three way tag team matches have never made much sense to me. That said, there was some solid action in the three way tag match on this show. Looking at the rankings, it definitely seems like we’ll get James Storm vs. Robert Roode at No Surrender.

- The central story of TNA for the last year has been Kurt Angle’s marriage that failed three years ago. This should not be the focus of a wrestling event, but it continues to be in TNA with no end in site.

- How many wrestlers have turned on friends in the last year to join Hulk Hogan? Is that all that TNA is capable of writing in their main event scene?

- Hulk Hogan and Kurt Angle are now hugging friends. That’s cute.

- The story of ODB and Jackie fighting for redemption and forgiveness for their evil deeds is interesting. I enjoyed them in the tag match tonight, but I wonder how this is supposed to interact with Velvet Sky.

- The X Division will now be about weight limits. It may also be about other limits too. I love this move. Sure, it verifies that the X Division is for Cruiserweights, but it also evens the playing field. Now, TNA needs to emphasize the division on a weekly basis and get a better champion that does not look homeless.

- What was that Jeff Jarrett segment? Why did he bring out “gardeners” and why does Hector Guerrero get called a legend when he did nothing but be the lesser of his four brothers? Basically, this segment was bad.

- Speaking of bad, that Anderson beatdown backstage certainly qualifies as bad. If all of this is being done to make Anderson a babyface, TNA needs to make him likeable, not just beatable.

- Crimson’s undefeated streak seems like quite the joke at the moment. TNA wants to prove that he is unbeatable, but they aren’t emphasizing him well. How many matches has he won? What motivates him to stay undefeated? Why should I cheer for him?

- Is the idea that Kurt Angle is going to take out all of his potential challengers? Was that just a way to eliminate Crimson from the Bound for Glory Series without having him lose?

The top of this show seemed like it would be a quality episode, but things went downhill quickly. The second hour was so jumbled and confusing that TNA needs to rethink the way they are writing shows. I did not sense that there was any momentum building for the next couple weeks on this show, which is scary when you consider that this was the second of four straight days of pay-per-view and TV at the Impact Wrestling Zone.
