Dot Net Awards: 2010 Best Broadcaster
Feb 19, 2011 - 12:50 PM |
Dot Net readers voted on a variety of 2010 awards throughout January and February. The following are the poll results of the Best Broadcaster (full-time) category.
(1) Jerry Lawler: 26 percent
(2) Michael Cole: 20 percent.
(3) Matt Striker: 20 percent.
(4) Taz: 17 percent.
(5) Josh Mathews: 8 percent
Others: 9 percent
Chris Shore's Thoughts: I'm going to catch all grades of hell for this, but the truth is the truth. I love Michael Cole's new act. I really do. I know I complain about him talking too much and the bickering with Josh Matthews. And all of that is true. But Cole put me to sleep as a regular play by play guy and I at least like the new Cole, when he isn't talking too much or bickering with Matthews. So my award goes to Michael Cole.
Jerry Lawler winning I think ultimately comes down to fans choosing from the least insulting (and well known) of the group. I realize my love for Cole is not the norm, and I understand why too. Announcing across all of pro wrestling is almost as bad as tag teams in WWE. So I have no quarrel with readers picking Lawler even though he would be way down on my list.
Jason Powell's Thoughts: Let's face it, had I not made this a "full-time broadcaster" award, Jim Ross would have won the poll even if he had never even called a match in 2010. We know he's better than the candidates listed, and even the candidates know he's better than they are. However, I wanted to get an idea of what the readers think about the current announcers and the results were interesting.
The King winning the vote isn't a surprise and I agree (albeit somewhat by default), but I am surprised to see so much love for longtime punching bag Michael Cole. I guess the heel antics worked with a lot of the readers. I enjoyed his antics initially, but it became grating as time went on. Cole topped Striker by five votes for second place. Mathews appears to have the brightest future of the young WWE announcers, as Striker has been pulled, and Todd Grisham met the same fate and received fewer votes in this poll than Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak.
