Shore's WWE Smackdown Hit List: Final hype for WrestleMania 30, Real American vs. Los Matadores, Dolph Ziggler vs. Titus O'Neal, Jerry Lawler tries too hard
WWE Smackdown Hits
Real Americans vs. Los Matadores: A good match that added another layer of tension to the Real Americans going into WrestleMania. This gets a Hit for the match quality, but it could easily go into the miss column for value. Los Matadores the act is beyond awful. WWE loved that bull, and now it's something to shake your head at. Still, Primo and Epico are solid wrestlers, as proved here, and the match itself was entertaining.
Randy Orton and Batista interviews: Boy we needed these Hits earlier in this build. Orton was far from monotone here and Batista was downright great. He oozes heel charisma out of every pore in his body and I wanted nothing more than to see him beat up after this footage. Orton didn't get to that level, but with Booker T leading him through a series of questions he managed to deliver a promo that actually put a little heat on him. It's probably too little, too late ultimately, but I give this a Hit because it did move the needle in a positive way.
WWE Smackdown Misses
Axxess footage: I realize that WWE doesn't hold an official Smackdown taping the week of WrestleMania to get guys to the host city sooner, but I will never understand why they spend so much time showing fan Axxess footage. I don't think it translates well to encouraging fans to come after about two minutes of it, and it makes the go home Smackdown dreadful to watch, which isn't exactly the best thing to do with your last free programming before your big event. I admit I'm not sure what the "right" idea for this Smackdown is, but I do know after years of seeing this it makes me hate this week almost as much as Christmas Smackdown.
Dolph Ziggler vs. Titus O'Neal: These two had a decent, albeit short, match, but much like the wasted Axxess footage, they wasted an opportunity to really put heat on one of these guys going into Mania. Instead, we get a four-minute match with Ziggler winning over a meaningless Titus. It's just filler. And when you consider fans voted Ziggler most likely to breakout at Mania this year, you realize exactly how big of a miss this is.
Jerry Lawler: Lawler's attempt to be funny when he told Renee Young she could only be better if "dipped in chocolate" was terrible. I don't think he meant to come across as creepy. I think he was trying to be funny. Intent matters in how you deal with a situation, so I'm not calling for anything to be done to Lawler. But that doesn't mean it came across as funny. It came across as creepy. Young handled herself well in that spot and soldiered on, but that was a huge swing and miss from Lawler.
