Gleed’s WWE Battleground preview and predictions: Rating the buildup and the interest level that WWE has created in the matches advertised for the July event headlined by John Cena vs. Roman Reigns vs. Kane vs. Randy Orton in a Fatal Four-Way
2014-07-20 10:49:59

By Haydn Gleed

I will be providing my rankings on the build-up, as well as my interest for the actual matches on a 1-10 scale. I have no inside knowledge of who's going to win the matches, these thoughts are based solely on my opinion.

Pre-Show: Cameron vs. Naomi

Buildup: 4
Interest: 4

I think it's safe to say that the Funkadactyls exploding is not quite as hot as when the Mega Powers exploded. Saying that, WWE should be given some credit for creating a diva feud that wasn't just over the title or a dancing man. It is a simple we were friends, now we are enemies straight up fight to see who's better.

Cameron is playing the arrogant heel well and Naomi is still coming across as likable so it's a decent feud. In ring, Naomi can hold her end up, but I do worry about how green Cameron looks.

Both women have got the opportunity to go out there and show what they have, and I'm hoping they take that opportunity. I'm picking Naomi to win to get the now traditional babyface win in the pre-show...

Prediction: Naomi

Intercontinental Championship Battleground Battle Royal

Buildup: 6
Interest: 4

I wouldn't be so down on this, if I didn't feel like I had just seen it. Yes, I know that was for the U.S. Title, and yes I know it was unexpected because of injury, but at the same time surely the great minds of wrestling could think of a better way to crown a new Intercontinental champion surely?

Moaning aside, I am impressed with the way they have built up this battle royal and as a consequence the championship, with every competitor pleading their case as to why they want to win the title.

Every preview and predictions I have written, I have thrown in a "against the grain" prediction, and this time I am going to make one here. Your winner, and new IC champion will be Bo Dallas. Granted, I am making the prediction slightly because I think it would be a riot to see him parade around with the title.

Aside from that, I can't see why you would give the title to anyone else, as no one else, seems to be on an upswing both push or career wise. Cesaro is obviously the only exception, but I feel we have already seen him with a secondary title and it wasn't very good. I can honestly see someone eliminate him, maybe even Kofi Kingston, and start a proper feud with them to keep him busy while Heyman is potentially with Lesnar.

So I Bolieve my boy Bo Dallas wins (see what I did there?) and we all get to enjoy the spectacle that will bring.

Prediction: Bo Dallas

The Uso's vs. The Wyatts for the Tag Team Championship in a best of three falls match

Buildup: 8
Interest: 9

There's no doubt about it, this match has the potential to be the in-ring match of the night. I am very excited about watching these two teams work together in this type of match, it really be a spectacle. I do worry that we have seen so much from these teams, that we might get a sense of de ja at certain points during the match, but when the quality of their other matches has been so good, it's something you can look past.

With the Wyatt's leaving the Uso's lying on Monday, it would suggest that the Uso's will be going over, but whoever wins I am concerned there is no one there for them to work with. If the Uso's win, who they going to feud with? Rybaxel? If the Wyatt's win who they going to face, Goldust and Stardust?

But that's for the future, sit back and enjoy this match. I think the Wyatt's will win the first fall, and the Uso's will come from behind and win the last two falls.

Prediction: The Uso's to retain the WWE Tag Team Championship

AJ Lee vs Paige for the Diva's Championship

Buildup: 6
Interest: 7

Well, it's the match we all wanted in the Diva's division. It is a huge boost to the WWE that AJ Lee came back, despite the way they brought her back. I mean, I completely understand the logic that she returned the same way she left, but when the way she left was flawed in the first place.

AJ's return should delight no one more than Paige herself. AJ Lee is the sort of Diva that Paige should be asking backstage every question she can think of in terms of how to work in WWE, as I see a lot of similarities between the two.

As for the buildup it's been ho-hum, but it looks to me that they are setting this up for Paige to turn full on heel. I hope this happens, as I think Paige's personality is very much more suited to being slightly darker rather than the smiley smiley happy champion. As long as WWE can flesh out her character, I think she will be huge as a heel.

AJ will retain here, but I can see an aggressive beatdown after the match to cement Paige's heel turn if they indeed go that direction.

Prediction: AJ Lee to retain the Diva's Championship

Jack Swagger vs. Rusev

Buildup: 7
Interest: 7

This has been built really well, and I am actually looking forward to this match. I spoke about previously how they seem to be pushing Rusev up the ladder, one rung at a time. After squashing the lower card talent, the next logical step was to feud with someone of Swagger's standing, a firm mid-carder.

Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter have been unlikely babyfaces, considering they have not renounced their controversial views, they have simply become faces because they are facing the evil Russian force of Lana and Rusev. I think it was very smart for them not to address any change in views, as it would have overcomplicated a simple story that they are trying to tell here. Imagine if Zeb had come out and tried to fill the logic hole in this one, it would have over confused things.

I personally wonder if plans for this match will change in anyway due to what happened in the Ukraine during the last week. I hope not, but saying that, I hope they don't try going for some dangerous cheap heat by mentioning Putin. (Incase the KGB are reading this, I'm not blaming him please don't kill me, I love shirtless Vlad riding his horses!) I think they learnt their lesson with that after the London bombings in 2005.

As long as there's not any major PC panic within WWE, Rusev should win this, but it should be more of a test for him than his previous encounters have been on PPV.

Prediction: Rusev

Chris Jericho v Bray Wyatt

Buildup: 8
Interest: 9

Last month after my Money in the Bank previews and predictions, I did get heat from a lot of you dear readers about my choice of Bray Wyatt as the winner. My prediction was based purely on the idea that Daniel Bryan would be fit and healthy and ready to go by SummerSlam at the latest. That was obviously incorrect.

The reason I bring this up, is that it feels to me that Chris Jericho has simply been slotted into the role that Daniel Bryan was probably pencilled in to take. As much as I like Daniel Bryan, and I hate the fact he's injured, I'm really happy this feud got to happen.

The promos have been really good, especially the Bray Wyatt backstage segment on the July 4 Smackdown, but they haven't been as good as I would imagine these two could produce. Saying that, they certainly haven't been bad enough to chant "boring" at them. I see this being a feud over three big matches, so I'm willing to wait and enjoy the build once they sink their teeth in.

They played up on Smackdown last week, that Bray is inside Jericho's head by the fact when his music played he instantly forgot his opponent and looked around for the Wyatt's, so I think Bray will take the first win in this feud.

Prediction: Bray Wyatt

Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins

Buildup: 10
Interest: 10

What can you say about this feud that hasn't already been said? This is arguably the hottest feud going in wrestling at the moment, anywhere. I was very critical after the Shield broke up, that I felt it was a rushed move by WWE to turn Seth Rollins and break up the group, and although I still stand by that, they have created this hot feud between these two men.

I saw Ambrose as Jon Moxley, and you could tell he had something special back then. My only concern has always been that from the promos I had seen, I couldn't see how he could translate them into babyface promos. Boy was I wrong. He has been fantastic, and along with the scrappy never give up character they have given him, he is one of the most entertaining characters that has been in the WWE in years.

Rollins has also surprised me with his ability to be a heel. I thought he was too "pretty boy" and wouldn't have the mic skills to pull off a heel character. Again, I was wrong, I hold my hands up.

These two will put on one hell of a match, and I'm guessing they will focus on the injured shoulder again and the fact it was re-injured in the Raw before the PPV. I do believe Rollins will win to keep his momentum going, but I don't think Ambrose will lose anything as he will have an out.

Prediction: Seth Rollins

John Cena vs. Randy Orton vs. Kane vs. Roman Reigns in a Fatal Four-Way for the WWE Championship

Buildup: 9
Interest: 9

Well, let's just get this out of the way, John Cena will retain here. He will be heading to SummerSlam to face Brock Lesnar, and Lesnar will take the belt from him. From all indications, that's the plan for the next two months.

I need to compliment the WWE on the buildup for this match though, as coming out of Money In The Bank, I had no idea how they would create a match that would hold anyone's interest. Once the cat was out of the bag that Cena would probably face Lesnar, the title match on this PPV would be seen as a forgone conclusion. Saying that, they have managed to create a bit of interest with most viewers despite the obvious winner.

My own personal intrigue with this match, is how they book Roman Reigns. I want to see how much interaction there is between Cena and Reigns and also if Cena does win how do they protect the former shield member. If they do want to go down the route of showing that Reigns is the "anti-Cena" then they have a good opportunity of showing in this match how different they are.

I think it's a safe prediction to say that Roman won't take the pinfall, so I'm expecting that at some point Orton and Kane will team up and take him out. I'm guessing either that will lead to a Reigns v Orton match at SummerSlam, or there will be dissension between Kane and Orton afterwards which leads to Cena winning and Kane vs. Orton at SummerSlam.

There's a lot of directions they can go with after this match, that's what makes WWE so exciting at the moment, but Cena will retain and Roman will look strong.

Prediction: John Cena

Think I'm losing my mind again by predicting Bo Dallas will win the IC strap? Or do you just want to talk to me about your predictions for Battleground? Feel free to hit me up on Twitter @haydngleed or send me an email at haydn.gleed@gmail.com.
