Gleed's Blog: The death of The Ultimate Warrior
By Haydn Gleed
When I was nine years old, my friend and I did a paper round between us. We saved our £5 (about $8) dollars a week, and after a month or two, we had enough to buy the guitar that we had dreamt of owning. The reason we wanted this guitar, was so we could play the Ultimate Warrior theme song.
Even to this day, if you give me a guitar, I can strum out that tune.
When I read the sad news this morning about the passing of Ultimate Warrior, I was shocked and saddened. How could the man who used to run to the ring, and bring with him so much energy have died, three days after one of the biggest nights of his life?
I know Warrior was a controversial figure, and please don't get me wrong, from a political point of view I didn't agree with probably 99.9 percent of the things that he said. His reputation is well documented, but at times like this it doesn't matter to me.
When The Warrior was announced in the Hall Of Fame, the nine year-old kid in me was delighted. I didn't care what his peers thought, I didn't care about all the political backstage stuff, all I cared about was the feeling of pure joy and excitement anytime that I re-watched old wrestling shows that his image gave me.
Over here in the UK, one of the biggest news outlets, the BBC, ran a story on the death of The Ultimate Warrior. That in itself is huge, as they don't report on anything pro wrestling related.
As part of the website, they have a feature that shows what the most read stories currently, and this story was number one on Wednesday. My co-workers, who know I'm really into wrestling and have mocked me, have come up to me and asked if the news was true and if I had any details.
That is the true legacy of the Ultimate Warrior. He is a wrestler that everyone knows. It doesn't matter to me in a time like this how good a wrestler he was or controversy he has created outside the ring. He was a larger than life character that transcended the stigma of Pro Wrestling into the hearts and minds of the majority of the people on this planet. That is special.
His final words on live TV say it better than I ever could:
"Every man's heart one day beats its final beat, his lungs breath their final breath. And if what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the body of others and makes them bleed deeper than something that is larger than life, than his essence, his spirit will be immortalized. By the storytellers, by the loyalty, of those who honor him and make what that man did live forever. You, you, you, you, you are the legend-makers of Ultimate Warrior... I am Ultimate Warrior, you are the Ultimate Warrior fans, and the spirit of the Ultimate Warrior will run forever!"
Rest in peace Ultimate Warrior, thank you for the memories.
