8/5 Powell's WWE Main Event Live review: A.J. Lee returns to address Paige's attack
By Jason Powell
WWE Main Event Live on WWE Network
Laredo, Texas at Laredo Energy Arena
After the opening montage, pyro was shot off on the stage. The broadcast team of Tom Phillips and Byron Saxton said they were live exclusively on WWE Network... Alberto Del Rio made his entrance for a match. He took the mic and said they were a few miles from Mexico, so he wanted to speak to his fellow countrymen in Spanish. Whatever he said was cheered, then he thanked the fans in English for their support over the years.
Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter made their entrance. Colter brought the U.S. flag to the ring with him. Colter took the mic and said he didn't understand Del Rio because where he comes from, people speak English, not Spanish, Spanglish, or Mexican. Colter said he might as well be in Mexico or Russia. Del Rio said they are not in Russia, they are on the border between Mexico and the United States, he then wound up the crowd again with more Spanish. They set the match and then Colter did the "We The People" line, which fans chanted along with him... [C]
Powell's POV: A confusing segment all around. They rang the bell before hand, so it seemed like Del Rio was coming to the ring for a match, but it was just a promo. Then you had heel Del Rio playing to the Latino fans, and babyface Colter delivering the "speak English" schtick. Perhaps most confusing of all is that all three men were cheered, and they even showed some Hispanic fans chanting "We The People" along with Swagger.
Heath Slater and Titus O'Neil came to the ring. Footage aired from Raw of Heath Slater beating Seth Rollins. Slater got tongue tied as he tried to do the setup for their Slater Gator tag team name. Titus still isn't happy with the name or that he's teaming with Slater. Slater's promo was interrupted by the entrance music for Goldust and Stardust...
1. Goldust and Stardust vs. Heath Slater and Titus O'Neil. In the end, Slater went for a sunset flip on Goldust, who was keeping his balance until Titus kicked him. Goldust fell into the rollup and Slater got the win. Slater tried to celebrate by jumping toward Titus at ringside, but Titus shoved him...
Heath Slater and Titus O'Neil beat Goldust and Stardust in 4:00.
Powell's POV: My network feed is glitchy again tonight, so the match times are estimates because it's impossible to get a real time when the feed rewinds itself a few seconds several times during a match. So we sat through weeks of bizarre Goldust and Stardust vignettes just to see them beat Rybaxel for the one billionth time on Raw and then lose to Slater Gator on Main Event?
A video package spotlighted the Stephanie McMahon and Brie Bella feud...
2. WWE Divas Champion A.J. Lee vs. Summer Rae in a non-title match. Footage aired of Paige shoving Lee off the stage on Smackdown. The obligatory C.M. Punk chants started along with the match. Lee threw a dropkick early in the match. She came up holding her neck and the referee kept Summer away from her momentarily. Lee got to her feet and Summer struck her from behind as the announcers spoke about Lee coming back from whiplash suffered because of the fall on Smackdown. Lee applied the Black Widow for the submission win...
A.J. Lee defeated Summer Rae in 2:00.
After the match, Phillips entered the ring to interview Lee, who told a fairytale about a woman who became a queen when she won the Divas Title, then lost it, became her own white knight, and won it back. Paige walked onto the stage and said she respects and loves Lee. She said she will be taking back "my championship" at SummerSlam, yet still wants to be Lee's friend. Lee said she likes Paige's style, but she won't like how the story ends. Lee took exception to Paige saying this is her house. "No, my little crumpet, this is my kingdom"...
The broadcast team hyped Swagger vs. Del Rio, and teased a video package on John Cena and Brock Lesnar... [C]
Powell's POV: Lee did a nice job of selling her storyline injury and now looks vulnerable heading into her match with Paige. Am I the only one who is tired of Paige acting like she wants to be friends with Lee? I think creative is overthinking this one.
The Brock Lesnar and John Cena video package that aired twice on Raw was replayed... Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter made their entrance... [C] The broadcast team hyped Dean Ambrose revealing stipulation of his SummerSlam match with Seth Rollins on Smackdown...
3. Jack Swagger (w/Zeb Colter) vs. Alberto Del Rio. Swagger had his ribs taped. Del Rio came out waving the Mexican flag. Swagger knocked Del Rio down with a shoulder block and then tried to get a USA chant started to mixed results. Del Rio returned the favor with a couple of shoulder blocks and then Swagger took a powder to confer with Colter. [C]
Swagger charged toward Del Rio in the corner, but Del Rio moved and Swagger crashed between the ropes and into the post. Del Rio grabbed Swagger's arm and wrenched it repeatedly as Swagger was lying in between the ropes. Del Rio continued to target the arm to set up his finisher. Del Rio went to the top rope, which is never a good thing, and Swagger cut his legs out from under him.
Swagger performed a superplex, but he came up selling his ribs. Swagger threw a clothesline and threw a big boot, which looked really bad because Del Rio put up his arms and came nowhere close to Swagger's boot. Swagger performed the Swagger Bomb for a two count.
Del Rio came back with a tornado DDT for a two count at 9:45. Del Rio went for his finisher, but Swagger shoved him off and caught him with a suplex for a two count of his own. Del Rio performed a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker and then hit his superkick for a two count. Colter yelled "yes, yes" when Swagger kicked out.
Del Rio caught Swagger in the Cross Arm Breaker in the middle of the ring. Swagger hooked his leg around Del Rio's to break free and then applied the Patriot Lock briefly. Del Rio got free and went for his kick in the corner, but Swagger blocked it and applied the Patriot Lock for the submission win...
Jack Swagger defeated Alberto Del Rio in 12:10.
Powell's POV: A good competitive match. The dynamic was a bit awkward as I mentioned earlier, but they worked hard and had a good back and forth match. They didn't get the hot split crowd reaction that it seemed like they were going for, but the fans were into the match and counted along with the near falls. I actually enjoyed Del Rio working babyface more than I've enjoyed his usual heel work. Overall, an interesting show with some odd yet fresh matchups.
