8/20 Shore's TNA Impact Wrestling live coverage: Hardcore Justice themed show, Samoa Joe vs. Low Ki for the X Division Championship, Gail Kim vs. Angelina Love in a Last Knockout Standing match for the Knockouts Championship
2014-08-20 20:00:32

By Chris Shore

TNA Impact Wrestling on Spike TV
Taped New York City.

[Q1] A video counted down to Hardcore Justice and then Bram made his entrance. He put a ladder in the ring. Abyss was out next and attacked at the bell…

1. Bram vs. Abyss in a Stairway to Janice match. Basically it's a ladder match with Janice above the ring. Bram bled after about two minutes, but I missed how. Abyss choke slammed Bram off the ladder and put two barbed wire tables in the corners. He dumped the tacks in the ring and put Bram through one of the tables. He tried to climb the ladder, but Bram pushed it over and Abyss crashed through the other table.

Bram recovered Janice and dumped the ladder. He went to hit Abyss, but Abyss grabbed the throat and tried to choke slam Bram onto the tacks. Bram fought out, but Abyss hit the Black Hole Slam on the tacks. Abyss went to use Janice, but Bram hit a low blow. Bram used Janice the same way as before and covered for the win…

Bram defeated Abyss at 8:26.

Shore's Slant: If you like hardcore wrestling then this was your match. I despise hardcore without a reason, and this feud is all about the matches and nothing about the guys. Also, there is no logic in watching Bram bleed from chair shots and barbed wire and thumbtacks only to have him hit Abyss with a nail board and Abyss live. Janice is the single stupidest thing on wrestling television anywhere.

IQG asked EC3 about his time in jail. He cut a rhythmic promo and said those responsible would be held responsible next…

[Q2][C] A video recapped the opening match. Backstage, Magnus walked up on Bram and they shook hands. Magnus asked Bram if he thought that made Bram better than him. He said he was going to become number one contender tonight. Bram smiled and told Magnus to go get his…

EC3, Spud, and Rhyno made their entrance. I had satellite issues and when it came back, EC3 thanked Kurt Angle for sending him to jail. Carter said he realized there was someone other than Bully Ray at fault for what happened to Aunt D. A man who was a hired mercenary. He turned on Rhyno and demanded to know what happened. He ran Rhyno down until Rhyno snapped.

Rhyno said he would rather be dirt poor than listen to Carter. He called EC3 a bitch and then told him to shove his money up his ass. EC3 asked if a bitch would "do this" and slapped Rhyno. Rhyno got hot and Spud tried to keep them apart. EC3 attacked and knocked Rhyno to the floor. He slammed Rhyno around the barricade and rolled him into the ring. Spud tried to intervene again, but EC3 shoved him down. Carter shoved Spud down and hit a knee lift to knock Rhyno out…

Backstage, Samoa Joe referenced his history with Low Ki and said tonight Low Ki was at a disadvantage because he thought he could be Joe, but that was arrogance…[C]

Mr. Anderson did a PSA about smoking. He said his father died of lung cancer and he himself took a long time to quit.

Shore's Slant: Carter is a classic heel. He got instant heat and turned Rhyno babyface. Well done. He really is the best guy they have not named Bully Ray. Joe's promos just aren't getting it done for me anymore. It's just, "Oh look, it's Samoa Joe. Isn't that nice." There's no excitement there.

The Hardys cut a promo backstage and said they weren't together for just a match or two, they were together to prove they were the best tag team on the planet. They said they had to talk to some people… A video hyped Samoa Joe vs. Low Ki. Both men made their entrance…

[Q3] 2. Samoa Joe vs. Low Ki for the X Division Championship. Both guys brawled around and Joe hit a back elbow to take control. Joe hit an enziguri and the camera showed serious whelps on his chest from Low Ki's chops. Joe setup for a muscle buster, but Low Ki reversed into a double stomp across the ropes. Joe came right back with a powerbomb. Low Ki kicked out into a high Boston crab that Joe transitioned into a STF.

Joe hit a clothesline that turned Low Ki inside out. Ki came right back with a flying kick for two. Ki went to the top and Joe caught him there. He hit a muscle buster and covered for the win.

Samoa Joe retained the X Division Championship in about 7:30.

The Hardys walked up to a dressing room and knocked. Devon answered and let them in…

JB interviewed Anderson about his I Quit match with Sam Shaw. Anderson said everybody knew Shaw was a creepy bastard except Gunner. He asked if Gunner was an idiot. Shaw called from off to the side and said Anderson was talking crap about his friends behind their back. He demanded that Anderson apologize to Gunner. They started to brawl and Anderson whipped Shaw into a barricade. Tenay said their match had apparently started…

Shore's Slant: Look, Matt Hardy deserves credit for getting his life straight, but Jeff alone is a bigger draw than the Hardy Boyz. That's just how it is. I can't believe they are back together for a long run. Joe and Ki had a typical ROH/X Division style match. I don't think they did as much as they could with their history, though. They could have put a lot more heat on that match. And I, like Anderson, am tired of seeing he and Shaw together. Move on.

[Q4][C] 3. Mr. Anderson vs. Sam Shaw in an I Quit match. The bell rang as soon as the show came back from commercial and the two men came through the curtain. They brawled on the ramp and Anderson hit the Finlay roll. Gunner came out and told him to stop. Gunner went back to Shaw and ate a drop toe hold. They brawled around the ring and Shaw took the mic. He told Anderson to apologize. Anderson said no. He told him to say he quit. Anderson said, "You quit."

They went to the ring and Shaw hit the ring post with his shoulder. Anderson hit an arm breaker and locked in an arm bar. Gunner looked on from ringside and Shaw made eye contact with him. Gunner got in the ring and as soon as he did, Shaw quit. Gunner had to half-shove Anderson off Shaw after the match…

Mr. Anderson defeated Sam Shaw at 5:49.

The Hardys left the locker room and Team 3D walked out. IQG asked what the Hardys wanted and Ray said the Hardys had a hell of an idea that would take tag team wrestling to the next level. He said there was one more piece of the puzzle and they were heading to the ring to find out if "they" were in…

Shore's Slant: I hope to god there is a story here or someone needs to explain to me why Anderson is beating Shaw over and over. They're removed far enough from the sanitarium garbage to salvage him, and it looks like they have an idea, but I get nervous when a guy just keeps going under like that.

A video from "last week" saw Angelina Love attack Gail Kim after their match. IQG asked Kurt Angle about it and Angle said Love didn't deserve a title match, but Kim demanded their match and the stip tonight. He told Angelina to be careful what she wished for because she was going to get it tonight…

[Q5] Bobby Roode cut a promo from earlier in the night by the cage about how sick he was when he was suspended because he couldn't compete for the title. He said tonight, he changed all that when he wins the six sides of steel match…

The Hardys made an entrance and cut a promo. Jeff said they were back together because the fans demanded it and it was the right time and right place. He said their name was synonymous with tag team wrestling, but there was another team that fit that criteria too and called out Team 3D.

3D made their entrance and Ray did his "Do you know who we are?" gimmick. He said they were the people who put Dixie Carter through a table. Ray said he knew the Hardys wanted to be tag champions again. Ray said it would be cool if 3D was tag champions when they were inducted into the Hall of Fame. He said they needed the champs out there to discuss the Hardys' idea.

The Wolves made their entrance and said they want to be part of the conversation about the greatest tag teams, like the Hardys and 3D. They said if either team wanted a shot they would answer any time, anywhere. They all nodded together…

Mike Tenay setup a video of him interviewing Dixie Carter in her bed. She put over her back being broken as somber music played and she used her sad voice. She said a Carter never forgets. Tenay asked what that meant and she said that meant the interview was over. She threw them out of her room as the music suddenly stopped and called for her husband to come fluff her pillows…

Shore's Slant: That talking segment with the tag teams was like a giant circle jerk with each team telling each other how great they all are. Spare me. How annoying was the Dixie thing? They should have just gone with the somber thing throughout. But they can't help themselves. She has to be bitchy Dixie even with a broke back. So bad.

[Q6][C] Tenay announced Christie Hemme was pregnant and hyped fitpregnant.com to check out pictures of Hemme… A Bray Wyatt-ish vide showed James Storm in a barn with Sanada. Storm said the revolution begins now and circled Sanada while he spoke to him about Storm being Sanada's strength. A graphic said "The Great Sanada" debuts next week. Uh, OK…

4. Gail Kim vs. Angelina Love (w/Velvet Sky) in a Last Knockout Standing match for the TNA Knockouts Championship. Kim ran to the ring during her entrance and chased Love around the ring. She hit a quick clothesline and dumped Love to the floor. She went to the top and Velvet Sky hit her with a cookie sheet. Kim fought back and hooked the ring post figure four and Velvet kicked her in the face.

Kim went after Angelina with a chair and ate a Botox Injection with the chair. She made the count, so Velvet put her and a chair in the ring. Angelina went to the top and Velet grabbed Kim in a piledriver setup. Kim tossed Velvet into Angelina and then dumped Velvet to the floor. Kim went to the top with Angelina and hit a modified kryptonite crunch on the chair in the hardest looking bump I have ever seen. Angelina couldn't make the count…

Gail Kim was the last knockout standing to retain the Knockouts Championship at 8:17.

Shore's Slant: Oh my God. That bump on the chair was brutal. Seriously, that's is the hardest thing I can recall. There was no give of the ring or the chair. They stuck the landing like Kerri Strug was wrestling. (Google it.) I'm over this feud so hopefully this was the blow-off.

[Q7][C] Kurt Angle announced that the Wolves, Hardys, and Team 3D would be a tag team series. I didn't understand the stipulation but he promised more next week…

MVP, Kenny King, and Lashley made their entrance to the ramp. MVP cut a promo about how he was supposed to wrestle for the title, but when he couldn't, he seamlessly transitioned to Lashley and look what happened. He ran through all the men Lashley had beaten and said Lashley had been unstoppable. He said that the winner of the cage match had already lost because they had to face Lashley. He told the crowd to bow to the real king of New York and the TNA Champion… Austin Aries and Eric Young made their ring entrances…[C]

[Q8] 5. Austin Aries vs. Eric Young vs. Magnus vs. Gunner vs. James Storm vs. Bobby Roode in a six sides of steel match. Only escapes in this match. First one out wins. Everyone brawled with no real serious escape threats…[C] Roode dragged Storm back into the cage as Magnus and EY fought on the mat. Gunner prevented Aries from escaping on the other side.

Roode hooked a crossface on Storm and Storm tapped. While he held it, EY hooked a Boston crab on Magnus and Aries hooked the Last Chancery on Gunner. Everyone hit rapid-fire moves with Gunner taking out Storm and Roode last. Gunner hulked up and head-butted the turnbuckle, which allowed people to catch him. Climbing the cage.

Aries tried to escape on the other side and that lead to tandem towers of doom by EY and Roode. Both men climbed the cage and saw each other. They raced to escape the cage ad both men hit the floor next to a ref who called for the bell. A replay showed both men hit at the same time. The two referees argued and could not come to a conclusion before the show went off the air…

Eric Young and Bobby Roode appeared to both win the six sides of steel match at 11:58.

Shore's Slant: Tenay screamed "Who's the number one contender?" like this stuff has never happened before in wrestling. I assume this means a triple threat match, which is fine, as long as it doesn't lead to another Roode vs. Young feud. The match itself was just a little too cute for me. The triple submissions, tandem towers of doom, and the tie were all just too much. It wasn't bad, just not for me.

A weak episode of Impact compared to the last few. There were some dreadful talking segments and the "Hardcore Justice" theme seems forced because they have been doing some sort of gimmick match three out of every four weeks anyway. This show just left me wanting. I'll have more tomorrow in the audio review of the show. Thanks for watching along tonight.
