8/15 Shore's WWE Smackdown live coverage: Final hype for SummerSlam, Dean Ambrose vs. Cesaro, Luke Harper vs. Mark Henry, Roman Reigns on MizTV
2014-08-15 19:00:26

By Chris Shore

WWE Smackdown on SyFy
Taped on May 13 in Seattle, Wash.

[Q1] The opening video aired, followed by Miz's entrance for MizTV. Michael Cole and JBL checked in on commentary. Miz put over SummerSlam being in LA and how he relates to those people there. He said he would retain the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam, but he wanted to give back right now. He said he would give back by mentoring young talent and introduced Roman Reigns.

Reigns made his entrance through the crowd to a huge pop and sat down beside Miz. Miz put over Reigns as Miz's mom's favorite wrestler. Miz said Reigns had to face Randy Orton on one of the biggest stages in WWE and asked if he was nervous. He said if Reigns failed he would be just a guy in a vest with great hair and a pretty smile. Reigns tried to get a word in but Miz kept talking, so Reigns knocked him out with a single punch. He said a guy in a vest with great hair and a pretty smile just put Miz on his ass. Miz started to come back in the ring and then thought better of it.

Reigns said Seattle to get the cheap pop. He said he respected Orton because he had won a number of championships. He said that means Orton will have to respect him once Reigns wins at SummerSlam. His music played and they showed Miz getting knocked out over and over again… The announce team hyped Mark Henry vs. Luke Harper… Dean Ambrose was shown backstage…[C]

Shore's Slant: Way to make your mid-card champion look like a chump, WWE. Miz doesn't need protected per se, but the title surely does. Reigns was short and simple, what he needs to be.

Ambrose made his ring entrance as a video recapped his feud with Seth Rollins. Cesaro was out next…

[Q2] 1. Dean Ambrose vs. Cesaro. The match went back and forth until Ambrose dove into the corner and hit his perpetually hurt shoulder on the ring post. Cesaro suplexed him to the floor from between the ropes…[C] Cesaro tried for the deadlift superplex but Ambrose bit him and hit a tornado DDT for two. Ambrose went for another, but Cesaro hit a pop-up uppercut for two. He followed with an inverted AA for two. After several reversals, Ambrose hit Dirty Deeds for the win…

Dean Ambrose defeated Cesaro at 11:09.

Post-match, Seth Rollins made his entrance to the stage. He put over the rules of the lumberjack match and said once the bell rang, he would win because he was better than Ambrose. He said Ambrose was never his friend or his brother…

[Q3] Dolph Ziggler was show walking backstage…[C]

Shore's Slant: An OK match. Both of these guys are capable of more, but I didn't expect them to blow it out here. It's good, but completely missable as the weak Cesaro character was never a real threat here. Rollins's promo was also just OK. The "you were never my brother or friend" lines didn't provide the punch you would expect, but he wasn't bad here. It's still the best feud in all of wrestling right now.

Miz was walking backstage with an icepack on his face. Kane walked up and Miz whined about Reigns hurting the moneymaker. Miz said Reigns needed to be banned from MizTV. He started to leave, but Kane booked him in a match with Reigns…

Slater Gator made their entrance. A video showed them bringing a cake to Hulk Hogan Monday night but messing it up. Another video showed Slater beating Ziggler off the Miz distraction on Raw. Ziggler was out next to a big pop…

[Q4] 2. Dolph Ziggler vs. Titus O'Neal (w/Heath Slater). Slater tried to coach Titus, but Ziggler hit the Zig Zag out of nowhere to win. The announce team tried to sell Slater as frustrated with Titus…

Dolph Ziggler defeated Titus O'Neal at 3:08.

The announce team hyped a replay of the Chris Jericho and Bray Wyatt talking segment from Raw… Cole setup a Slam City commercial…[C]

Shore's Slant: Man I hate go home Smackdowns. They put everyone on the show, but most of what they do is completely irrelevant.

A video recapped the feud between Jericho and Wyatt and transitioned into a replay of their talking segment from Raw… Mark Henry and Big Show made their ring entrance…[C]

Rowan and Harper made their ring entrance…

[Q5]3. Mark Henry (w/Big Show) vs. Luke Harper (w/Eric Rowan). After a couple of lock-ups, Henry drove Harper over the top rope. Back in the ring, Harper hit a big boot and locked in a rest hold. Henry escaped and lifted for the WSS. Rowan ran in and kicked Henry down to cause the DQ…[C]

Mark Henry defeated Luke Harper at 3:06.

Shore's Slant: Here I was all excited because Luke Harper (and Mark Henry to a lesser degree) got the top of the hour spot. Looks like the guys who should be WWE Tag Team Champions have to carry Show and Henry for the next few months.

4. Mark Henry and Big Show vs. Luke Harper and Eric Rowan. The match was joined in progress and Cole explained Kane booked this during the break. Show manhandled Harper so Harper went to the floor. Rowan attacked Big Show when he followed. Rowan almost put Show out with a sleeper, but he powered out and tagged Henry. Henry knocked around Rowan and lifted him for the WSS. Harper ran in and ate a kick from Show. Show hit the knockout punch on Rowan as Henry held him. Henry hit the slam right after for the win…

Mark Henry and Big Show defeated Luke Harper and Eric Rowan in 5:01 of TV time.

A video recapped the Brie Bella vs. Stephanie McMahon feud.

[Q6] The previous video ran into this quarter. A clip of the Stephanie McMahon interview with Cole from WWE.com aired… AJ Lee made her ring entrance…[C]

Shore's Slant: Oh no. Instead of having to carry Show and Henry, the young, fresh, tag team had to put them over for no reason. Bleh. I know they can get their heat back with one win or Wyatt promo, but I just don't like the move period. Show and Henry have maybe a tenth of the upside as Harper and Rowan.

5. AJ Lee vs. Eva Marie. AJ attacked at the bell and the ref pulled her off. Why? AJ worked over Eva and Paige once again skipped around the ring. AJ attacked Paige this time. She beat the hell out of Paige at ringside until the ref counted her out…

Eva Marie defeated AJ Lee by countout at 2:02.

Post-match, Paige hit a kick on AJ, followed by the Paige Turner… The announce team hyped the main event, and Jack Swagger vs. Bo Dallas for next…[C]

Shore's Slant: Are Slater and Eva Marie dating? They have the same winning streak.

[Q7] A video for the Network aired… Swagger and Colter made their entrance. Dallas was out next…

6. Jack Swagger (w/Zeb Colter) vs. Bo Dallas. Swagger's ribs were taped, selling the attack from Rusev. Bo went after them, but Swagger picked the leg for the Patriot Lock and Dallas tapped immediately…

Jack Swagger defeated Bo Dallas at 0:50.

Post-match, Rusev and Lana came to the stage. Lana said the winner of the match will have his country's flag raised above the ring. Lana said Rusev would dedicate his victory to Putin…[C]

Shore's Slant: What the hell happened to Bo Dallas?

A video recapped the promo Bo cut on the app during the break. He said the ref screwed up and confused him reaching for the ropes as a tap out… Cole and JBL setup the John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar hype video…

[Q8] Reigns made his ring entrance…[C]

Miz finished his entrance while a video recapped the opening segment…

7. Roman Reigns vs. The Miz. Miz ran from Reigns until Reigns pinned him in the corner. The ref got in between them and Miz used the ref to hit a kick to the leg. Miz stayed on the leg and hooked the figure four. Reigns broke the hold by pulling Miz's leg away. Reigns hit a Samoan drop and his kick on the apron. He setup for the Superman punch, but Miz went to the floor. He started to leave, but Ziggler walked out. Miz turned around and took the Superman punch on the floor. Back in the ring, Reigns hit the spear for the win…

Roam Reigns defeated The Miz at 7:02.

Shore's Slant: I have to say, having Ziggler walk out but not get involved did add a little something to the SummerSlam Intercontinental Title match, so this wasn't a total waste of time. Otherwise, with the end never really in doubt, it was a lackluster finish to a lackluster show. I'll have more tomorrow in the Hit List. Thanks for watching along tonight.
