8/12 Powell's WWE Main Event Live review: The Uso Brothers issue an open challenge
By Jason Powell
WWE Main Event Live on WWE Network
Seattle, Washington at Key Arena
The opening aired and then the Uso Brothers headed to the ring while Tom Phillips and Byron Saxton checked in on commentary. The broadcast team spoke about the open challenge that the Uso Brothers issued for this show. Once in the ring, Jimmy and Jey Uso spoke about how the rumor is that The Authority issued the open challenge.
However, they said they went to The Authority themselves for the open challenge because they want to be known as one of the best tag teams in WWE history. They mentioned legendary teams such as The Hart Foundation, the Road Warriors, Edge & Christian, and the New Age Outlaws.
One of the brothers jokingly asked the other if he's been watching WWE Network. The fans responded with a brief $9.99 chant. Ryback and Curtis Axel headed to the ring. After a brief in-ring verbal confrontation between the tag teams, Rob Van Dam made his entrance. The broadcast team noted that RVD is a three-time tag team champion.
RVD said that if the Uso Brothers were looking for someone to challenge them, then they should look no further than him. Ryback reminded RVD that it's called tag wrestling for a reason and accused him of being a singlet stealer. Funny. RVD said he knew he forgot something. "Wait, no I didn't, come on out, partner." Sheamus's music played and he came to the ring. There was some pushing and shoving between the various parties in the ring.
Kane's music played and he walked onto the stage in his corporate attire. He said there was no reason to argue because there will now be a Triple Threat match for the tag team championship...
Powell's POV: Good lord, I was half right last night in my Raw live review when I wrote, "Let me guess, Rybaxel?" regarding which team would challenge the Uso Brothers. I do like the addition of Sheamus and RVD to the match as that certainly feels more special than Rybaxel losing yet another tag team match. Okay, so they'll probably lose a Triple Threat tag team match instead, but at least Sheamus and RVD add a little life to the match.
A Brock Lesnar and John Cena video package aired... Seth Rollins was shown walking backstage... [C] Rollins made his entrance and then Raw footage was shown of Dean Ambrose attacking him on the stage...
1. Seth Rollins vs. Kofi Kingston. Kingston was in Boom mode before the match and there was no sign of Xavier Woods or Big E. Rollins was working over Kingston when they went to break at 3:30. [C] After the break, Kingston performed a huracanrana that drove Rollins into the turnbuckle. Kingston rolled him up for a good two count. Rollins came back with the Curb Stomp for the win...
Seth Rollins defeated Kofi Kingston in 9:15.
Powell's POV: A good match. I assumed they just put the Xavier Woods faction on the back burner until after SummerSlam, but Kingston going back to his babyface persona here has me wondering if the idea has been scrapped.
Backstage, Renee Young interviewed Rob Van Dam and Sheamus about the Triple Threat tag title match... The broadcast team hyped more Raw footage for after the break... [C] A graphic touted that the WWE app has been downloaded 13 million times... A video package focussed on the Stephanie McMahon and Brie Bella feud, including the Claire Lynch 2 angle from Raw...
The broadcast team said Brie Bella made bail and her SummerSlam match is on. They also said Stephanie McMahon will be interviewed by Michael Cole on the WWE website on Wednesday... The broadcast team hyped the main event... The Uso Brothers made their entrance... [C] Roman Reigns appearing on MizTV was advertised for Smackdown...
2. The Uso Brothers vs. Sheamus & Rob Van Dam vs. Ryback & Curtis Axel in a Triple Threat match for the WWE Tag Team Championship. Rybaxel was roughed up and lying at ringside heading into the break. [C] Sheamus and Ryback traded offense after the break. Sheamus hit White Noise on Ryback and then they both tagged in their respective partners at 9:00.
RVD hit a standing moonsault on Axel. RVD and Axel fought into the Usos' corner, where one of the Uso Brothers tagged RVD to tag himself into the match. A short time later, Jimmy Uso dove onto Sheamus and Ryback on the floor. Axel rolled up Jey in the ring for a two count, but Jey came right back.
Axel caught Jey on the top rope. RVD tagged himself in as Axel was slamming Jey off the top rope. There was a sequence where the wrestlers took turns hitting big moves on one another. In the end, RVD hit the Frogsplash on Axel. However, Jimmy had tagged Axel prior to the move and then followed up with a top rope splash on RVD for the win. The babyface teams shook hands afterward...
The Uso Brothers defeated Rob Van Dam & Sheamus and Curtis Axel & Ryback in 12:10 to retain the WWE Tag Team Championship.
Powell's POV: A good main event by this show's standards. Still, this felt like a very missable episode. I thought they might load up the show more since it's the first day of the worldwide network launch. Instead, they delivered two matches and a lot of SummerSlam video packages. For whatever it's worth, I noted on Twitter (@prowrestlingnet) that I experienced two "fatal errors" with the network during the broadcast and heard back from readers who were experiencing similar issues or other issues of their own.
